I like the character and what they tried to do with her, by giving Terry a bad girl sorta love interest. Trying to recreate the whole Batman-Catwoman dynamic and all that.

But the two sides of the characters were just so badly integrated. Iirc all that happens is she and Terry meet COMPLETELY BY RANDOM, in a city of like 50 million people, and then later she stands Terry up for a date and he happens to track down her phone call and discovers the card gang in the hotel suite.

Would have been much better imo if the plot depended less on giant coincidences, and they did something like... i dunno, the card gang wanted to rip off Bruce Wayne, so they sent Ten to get in good with Wayne's houseboy. But then they develop an actual relationship and she starts questioning the whole plan or something.

Or Ten follows the Batmobile and doesn't exactly see BB change into Terry, but realizes that they're connected somehow, so she tries to get closer to Terry to figure out exactly what that connection is. Something to get the characters to actually have a reason to be together in the plot, i dunno.

God I loved this show

The episode where Melaine encountered Terry was called Dead Man's Hand. And, it weren't entirely random, she was at a club where she witnessed Terry and Diane have an argument and she decided to acquaint herself with him.

And she did question the Royal Flush Gang, several times. She was always on the fence. The episode Once Burned dealt with a similar theme of her loyalty to them after they lied and weave together a story the Jokerz took them hostage. Melaine stole a few valuables from a criminal secret poker game and Terry as Batman even warned her and tried to stop her, she only said "They're family, regardless."

Unfortunately, Melaine only appeared in three episodes, with the third having her been reformed and worked as a chef. I wouldn't have mind if she returned as an anti-villain of sorts helping Terry/Batman.

Right, but the reason why Melanie is at that club is entirely random. She just HAPPENED to be a sad sack looking into the building, sees a couple break up, and is like 'yeah, he's a 9/10 and i bet i could get the rebound! 'Ol Mel's not got alotta choices!'

It would have been a stronger plot if she had some actual Ten-related reason to go after Terry, is all I'm saying. Play around with the duality of the character and even ties in to the theme of the costume.

I do admit that it's easy for me to say these things decades later and with the benefit of hindsight. Who knows what kind of time and budget constraints the writers had to work with. Maybe it was a case of 'had to push out the draft in 3 days so the animators can get to work' and this is just the best they could do.

Reminder that "muh catwoman" is an inaccurate reference that doesn't apply to Ten's character.

Every girl in Batman doesn't need to be likened to fucking Catwoman every time.

Although, for me, I still like the outcome, even though Mel weren't used beyond three episodes. I found the idea her not being aware Terry is Batman was great because if Dini or Timm would've explored her character even further, I think an episode of her connecting the dots that Terry is Batman could've been all the more powerful and impactful.

One thing that I gotta praise for is the design of the character. All the other royals have mostly white costumes, but Ten is split down the middle. Pretty good visual metaphor for the whole 'struggling to figure out where Ten ends and Melanie begins' thing she's got going.

There's more to video quality than resolution. Even if it's stuck in SD, it could likely still benefit from the higher bit-rate that Bluray provides. Also, JLU at least is available in HD from places like iTunes and it doesn't look like an upscale to my eyes.

It was a plot by Amanda Waller to ensure that there would be another batman after Bruce dies.

But that still doesn't change Terry's motives for becoming batman in the first place, since he did it for the same reason Bruce did. There's just another layer to the story to help explain how Terry was able to handle being batman.

Well, yes and no. Here's the run down, spoilered of course.

In the beginning they gathered genetic crap from Batman (during his Justice League bidnizz) via blood on the ground, saliva, or the innuendo implying lots of sex. The madame president planned to make a new batman because the world needed one. They found a couple that could not have children of their own. Profile matched Bruce's old parents etc etc etc. Impregnated mom discreetly, then let the kid live a life. They PLANNED to murder the shit out of his parents to recreate a batman scenario, BUT INSTEAD the hitman copped out and they decided to scrap the project. TERRY was growing up normal now. His dad dying and the vengeance against Powers and the Jokers was a coincidence that happened just another 8 years later. His meeting with Bruce, him becoming a new batman, all coincidence.

Really it had no impact on him as a character. Except for some sort of feel at the end of the episode. Totally worth it.

Mmmm, that's how they always do those kinds of plots, and then turn around and use it as an excuse to have thme forever hate eachother after the hero discovers the truth unless there's so much fan demand that they bring her back for an unsteady friendship in maybe one episode.

The way they did it was nice because it shows Melanie isn't really a cold-hearted criminal, she's just a lost little girl who happens to have a terrible family and home life, and does what she does because she feels like she doesn't have any choice other than to completely isolate herself from everyone she's ever known.
Case in point, she doesn't spend her free time planning the next move or sitting around enjoying the spoils of a heist well done, she wanders around the city seeking out fun and people her own age, while being sad and self conscious enough to not want to approach them for fear of rejection.

Her whole thing was Terry saved her, somewhat at least. He didn't sweep her up and marry her, but the hero can't do that with everybody.

That being said I would love to see her character used more, as long as they didn't completely destroy her in a Gwen Stacy type of way. If they ever redid Batman Beyond in a quality comic or series retelling of events I would like to see the story played out over multiple episodes, but as it stands I'm glad they did it the way they did.

My first instinct is to say soemthing like Cass's suit, but that might be too similar to Terry's, maybe something white and black like her Ten outfit, that could be an interesting idea since they've never really done something like that with a BatFam member as far as I'm aware. Possibly something like an updated version of the Mystery of the Batwoman suit?
