However, in essentially all of his detailed plans, he has shown that he intends to make the rich more rich and make things easier on businesses than America's people, so there's still a chance that he could "fix" Obamacare in a way that makes it just as terrible (in the ways that it is terrible) or worse.

In a pure democracy you get a similar problem. Then only California, New York, and Texas would matter with most other states being marginalized.

There is no perfect solution but it does protect those states better than a blanket popular vote would. You have to remember the reason most smaller states aren't visited is because their voting record is remarkably consistent, which generally indicates they're more or less happy with a certain party's policies. Should they ever become unhappy or feel disenfranchised they're free to swing their vote and become a greater focus for national attention. Utah this election was a great example of that. You're basically advocating throwing out a system that benefits roughly half of the states now in favor of a system that only benefits about 4.

The electoral college is supposed to be the emergency stop, not to improve state representation. It is designed to kick out populist candidates who are seen as dangerous to the country.

When it was created (13 colonies) it had very little impact on representation of the states, especially compared to the modern 1:4 ratios of voting value we see.
