Well I always appreciated the balance of the two settings, that being on-earth episodes that focused on Star interacting with something alien to her and normal to Marco, and the off-earth episodes with the reverse. There was a simplicity to it that allowed for the rather imaginative alien worlds to add flavour to the show, inbetween Star interacting with the typical cartoon 'alien in a normal setting for us viewers'.

I can get behind that. My problem was more that places like Pixtopia felt like nothing, and then places like the Bounce Lounge and Quest Buy were in some ways too similar to Earth (the latter might be my favorite episode actually but the name is terrible).

I think Mewni at least has an interesting history and society, and I guess if we do more dimensional travel I'd like to see more of there. We did get a bit of it already and those episodes were all pretty good.

Quest buy was my personal favourite off-earth setting, purely for how amusingly mundane it was treated. However I can understand that feeling of the worlds not feeling fleshed out enough. I personally didn't feel that way as I could appreciate the constraints of 11 minute episodes, but it did grate at times with places like St. O's that had been built up so highly.

I suppose that comes down to how well the world building was handled, I think Pixtopia did it well enough as does anything Mewnie related, but outside of that it's rather lacking.

That being said I have no qualms with the main focus being Star interacting with things on Earth, far from it as I actually prefer that theme. However, the way season 2 went about it felt rather disconnected from season 1. It reduced a lot of the big attractions of the first season's dynamics whilst trying some newer things that just didn't hit the mark. There were also a few sub-plots from season 1 which went nowhere or were just handled a bit hap-haphazardly, like the whole Marco romance and Miss Heinous' revenge.

The key thing in my mind is that, if the show wants the focus to be on Star's adventures with mundane life on earth it has to establish secondary and tertiary characters to provide fresh plot lines and dynamics without just making them the entire focus of an episode. I wish we'd learnt more about Jackie before the next episode, I wish we'd seen more from Tom in the wake of his supposed change of heart in Mr Candle Cares and other such grievances.

My main problem with this season is that some of the SoL episodes really just feel like they're using them to pad out the season. Some are good and have some mild character development stuff, others like Pizza Thing are just so nothing.

I actually think the way they're juggling the multiple plots/characters that last season set up is done pretty well, all things considered. Though I think the previous season had a higher concentration of good episodes, most of the plot was crammed in at the very end, long after some people who might have liked it had jumped ship because of weaker earlier episodes that felt entirely episodic, while 2 alternates plot episodes with lighter stuff fairly well by comparison.

I think I'm the only person who has no problem with what we've seen of Jackie because it really feels like what we see is it. She's just a nice person. And while that's not too interesting compared to other things in the show, she also hasn't had a ton of focus either and probably won't be with Marco long; I'd be annoyed if she had gone on multiple adventures with Star and Marco and we still knew nothing about her, but as it is I'm fine with her.

I personally think that, due to the early order from Disney for season 2, a lot of the initially discarded plots for season 1 were adapted for use in season 2. Alternately the slice of life episodes in season 2 could just not have been written very well, perhaps Daron wanted to express some more of her initial desires on how to approach the Star vs idea but wasn't able to implement them as successfully as intended, that was the feeling I got from episodes like Star vs. Echo Creek and the one with the dog.

I'd agree with that regarding Janna's place in recent episodes, she's exactly what a secondary character should be and she really fits in well. My problem lies with how it was handled earlier on in the season, secondary characters would have an entire episode's focus and tertiary characters would spend a lot of time in the focus of an episode and then disappear. I feel like there should be a middle path that provides more characters being available for the main cast to play off, without detracting from the main appeals of the show.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of how so many early episodes this season had Star meeting some vaguely insane homeless person. I think the quality's evened out more with the most recent episodes though.

Guess we'll just have to see what they end up doing with Jackie next time. I don't think the last few episodes have all been great but for the most part I haven't been so underwhelmed as I was by episodes like Red Belt, Starstruck, etc. It feels like the show's found a decent groove, where the weaker recent episodes haven't been as weak as that. It is a really inconsistent season though.

I also miss Star and Marco interactions, though I can see how breaking them up can be kind of necessary when it comes to developing characters like Janna, Tom, etc. Easier to balance two characters' interactions in a 10-minute format than three, at least at first. Like, developing Janna beyond a tertiary character in one episode with just Star, and then having her hang out with the group after that, once we have a better idea of who she is.

Starsitting was one of the stronger episodes for me, not just of this season but in general, and that was pretty much all Star and Marco.

I can agree with that outlook for sure, the better episodes in season 2 have really been enjoyable, though not as enjoyable as the highs from season 1. Although there's still time to get there, given many of the stronger season 1 episodes fell in the second half of the season.

That's a fair outlook on it, I'm personally much more of a fan of the more gradual development of secondary characters, they just have to provide some minor dynamic that adds to the main cast over time and people will appreciate them. I've seen what devastating things can happen to a series that over-emphasizes secondary characters.

However, Janna was pretty much spot on in that last episode and she looks like she'll be right at home in the next episode too, they did good work with her for sure.

Starsitting and Game of Flags were up there with the best of season 1 for me, fantastic episodes for that very Marco, Star dynamic reason.

Yeah, I really can't complain too much about how Janna has been handled as a secondary character, especially given the likelihood of alterations being made to the season 1 formula to better reflect Daron's intentions in season 2.

I think I'd say the same if Tom got a little more development too. Perhaps seeing him interact with Star in some manner that isn't him trying to get back with her, expanding on him and Marco's seemingly growing friendship in some minor way or just having him about for a minor scene in an episode.

More than anything I just want some more Marco and Star hijinks, that's the good shit right there.
