Make sure you do a lot of people studies. I like watching certain types of music videos (pop types for the wild dancing and poses) and pausing them to do gesture drawings. It really helped. Remember that to be able to draw comfortably and efficiently in your own style, you first need to be able to draw realistically. It's like the base under your finished piece. Then, your style slowly comes out. Or if you already had one, it starts evolving into something more distinguishable. And of course, you'll be able to do all those action poses you'll need. Good luck lil dude

dunno if its been covered by anyone already in a previous thread but has anyone got any advice about taking a comic to print? I've researched it a wee bit but every option seems too pricey to be worth it - as in, its gunna be about 50/60 quid per volume, which if fine for me gettin' one for myself as a keepsake but seems a tad pricey to ask what few readers i have to pay if they want a volume.

tl:dr - tips on actually printing volumes
>>
>>87736045
how much is a volume?

as I understand it, you have to print like several hundred before it's cost-effective, and then you have to do the shipping yourself which becomes fucking maddening. I'm getting this from several comics I follow which have had this come up and they've told us about it. if you can get ahold of him, Jake Richmond might have advice

What are some concepts or stories you want to see in a webcomic? Would you rather have something unique or something done to death, but well made?
>>
>>87740773

Define "well made" and "unique" just a tad further here...

>unique story, bad writing
>cliche story, good writing

The latter

>unique, bad art
>cliche but well-drawn

The former
>>
Post your absolute worst ideas for comics

When I was twelve (27 now) I wanted to make a wholesome Christian web-manga about fighting literally Satan in a dragon form. There was no plot and my characters were bland.
>>
>>87740773
>concepts
a wreck of some kind with a robot or personality-having computer who is not remotely his old self, as he's way too damaged. the basic mannerisms are there but not the depth of personality or the memories

an impostor is exposed by asking a question they can't answer
the next time they're suspected, and it's that impostor again, they ask the same question, and readily give the answer
turns out they never told the real-one about that story, so now ONLY the impostor would know the answer
>stories
a rehabilitation center for captured invading-alien-gynoids that teaches them the wonders of being good guys through love and all that shit, then makes them into a team of crimefighters.. only IN PRACTICE that mostly means minor traffic-cop or litter prevention kinda shit, then, in the process of their training or their day-to-day bullshit, they stumble upon something more major and uses their superior abilities. kinda like that Booster Gold episode of justice league where he was supposed to be on crowd control but blundered into a bigger thing and learned how to be a real hero
>>
>>87740972
it's sad how hard that shit is to do well. just once I wanna see muh epic righteous battles done in a way that feels a bit more Bill n' Ted and a bit less.. uh.. that one CGI show with the armor and like, the special visor to see demons... what was that?
don't even ask me about my RPG videogame ideas
>>
>>87741049

The one that cr1tical riffed on on his YouTube side channel for shitposts?

Also your reverse psychology about the RPGs is working on me.
>>
>>87741076
well honestly I don't have a lot of fleshed-out ideas, just inspiration. The good parts of those old wisdomtree games, without the bad parts. the most obvious idea has the clear flaw that A) a 13-member RPG party is hard to shuffle around, and B) they wouldn't have a ton to distinguish them since even Luke's doctor skills become kinda redundant when you have magic healing.

maybe it would be better to amp up the artistic license and go kinda Spawn with it. I dunno.
>>
>>87741096

Had to look up what Wisdomtree was - I think the only Christian game I ever played was an extremely difficult text adventure my grandparents had. All I remember is finding a shekel on an altar or something and it wouldn't let me do anything except take the shekel.

Also nowadays I'm not religious (not asshole type atheist, mind you, just stopped believing), so 'Christian-themed' would be the 'bad part' for me. It feels like an advertisement made into something that's supposed to be fun, but the fun's sucked away by someone trying to sell you something (in this case, eternal salvation in exchange for your tithe).
>>
>>87741218
>in exchange for
if it helps ya m8, anyone who says that isn't a believer either.
yeah i'm told that's why veggie tales continues to be popular. they focus more on the 'lesson' aspect.. and do it a lot better than most educational tv ever did

funny, and back on topic i'm not sure i've ever seen webcomics meant intentionally for kids. Seems like someone would, if just for fun.

>>
>>87741418
yeah there's plenty who intentionally go G, but I can't think of any with a specific aim for the wee ones, educational or otherwise. it's just interesting because, while rare, you do see examples of those in unexpected places like flash games (sissy's magical ponycorn adventure comes to mind) and of course EVERYONE wants to write the next big kids' book (as if it was possible for there to ever be something like Arthur again)
>some Es have white in them

3/4 Still on the to-do list, is spotting, speed /effect lines lines, and sound effects. I might try reinforce the line weight and then try coloring them at once.
>>
>>87742045
The Rococo's head on second panel there is also redrawn and pasted on by cutting out a piece of paper.

4/4 This is the last page I made that bridge from different section of the storyboards or pages that were done out of sequence. The next page is actually one of the earlier pages.

feel like sharing a WIP here. Actually, do you guys think the order of the last three rows of panels is right? Without the last word bubble, I'd think the last row should go first.. but the rhythm's better this way.
Either way, the tagline reflects how I feel about this little deto(u)r. although.. no fucking way am I going to finish under 1000 this time. not if I keep having fun on the way to the end.
>>

>>
>>87741369
I still think it would be fun to do a gamers-on-a-couch thing once I've got a few action comics under my belt.

The catch would be that it stars the larger-than-life protagonists of my previous series, so it's a barbarian king, a space pirate and a magical girl playing video games and giving completely ridiculous opinions on them, and their zany non-human sidekick would be played by yet another previous protagonist wearing a dog suit (alternately they'd run around naked and just act like a dog. Only one of the other characters would notice).
>>
>>87742242
yeah come to think of it, how often are vampires meant to have actually died and been buried? like, SOMEtimes, but not very often, not in the modern popculturey ones anyway.
once again my mythos makes it easy for me as they're just eccentrics and not undead in the slightest, but coffinbeds is exactly the kinda shit they would do

I started my comic out of spite, bitterness, and hatred, and then I never found a better motivation. So now I regularly have to whip myself into an emotional deathspiral to get the motivation to shove through the more heavy workloads.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?
>>
>>87742961
What do you hate/spite that inspired you?

I can relate to writing things to spite other things for failing to live up to my personal standards. Greg and Goldie is literally "what if Twilight had nosferatus and fun main characters". Lido started in part as "I like all the stuff in fantasy but people rarely utilize it well enough to engage me".

>look at your old stuff that sucks compared to what you're making now and think about how good you're eventually gonna get if you keep it up
>read through your archive to remind yourself how much effort you've put into it already and what a waste it would be to stop now. It's a fallacy, but it works.
>If you catch yourself thinking about why you think your particular story is worth writing, write that down and keep it as a reminder.

What about producing a single issue of around 28 pages to start with, rather than a full 246pg GN?
You'll also probably want to start looking into attending conventions as an exhibitor, in order to sell those comics.

You could also try comiXology Submit if you wanted to put out a digital collection.

If you're UK based and on facebook, you should take a look at the CVA and CATS groups.

I think something in the vein of "Would you be this sad if you'd lost me?" sounds more natural.

In the final panel, the top of blondie's hair kind of looks like the black girl's mouth. Probably won't be a problem once it gets colored.

I see, thanks a lot! Will make sure to fix by the time I colour. Same for the hair strand over the mouth.

Also, have this one ready to colour, I think this one is the first strip completely dialogue-less I made. I think it still begs some fixing, but I'm falling sleep over the keyboard, so I'll leave that for later.

A teen is unwittingly the reincarnation of Adolf Hitler - he doesn't share any political views or aspirations for power, it's basically in-name-only because the reincarnationed people are truly just shaped by their upbringing. This is only known by a secret society that tracks reincarnations of historical figures and probes them psychically to get a better read on the historical events of the time. His best friend is a member of the society, a reincarnation of Alexander Hamilton, and has to lobby on his friend's behalf within the society because the kneejerk reaction everyone has is to treat him like shit. There's also a fear he'll be discovered by modern followers of Hitler and whatever the fuck that would spark.

It was intended to be a drama-romance with a LOT of angst - he's a very sensitive boy, very romantic, flashbacks to Nazi Germany would fuck with him very badly. I ended up abandoning the story because I don't think the intersection of history and fantasy would jive well. I don't think I could handle it with the gravitas it requires. I was about 12 when I wrote it.

The way the lower character's brows are lowered makes them look bored or skeptic. Raise the eyebrows and add some stress lines to indicate they're panicked. You did a good job with the other person's face. Pic related is a quick example of what you could do.

>>87742703
I agree with this anon>>87748351 the face makes the character really unattractive to look at which betrays your artistic abilities. Also to make it feel more like an environment and less like a background try and add more details to the sky like vague clouds or birds and possibly distant structures or even juist silhouettes. It feels too much like these are the only two characters in existence and this cliffside exists in a void.

>>87737447
your line art is good but you really need to make a color palette for this. The colors are everywhere and there is nowhere for the eye to be drawn. Lighting is all over the place and it really keeps it from having a good atmosphere despite your drawing talent. Try and work the logo into a frame or a plaque, with how it is only separated by a gradient it looks pretty cheap. Even just darkening the edges to draw focus to the center would help a little.

Cover for an idea I have. First time I tried watercolor paints, so forgive the garbage

Basically the idea is about a soft-ass beta nerd who gets dumped by his gf that he's financially dependent on, moves back in with his mom, and one of his childhood friends gets him into the bloody and frankly fascinating world of medieval combat tournaments. He spends most of his time getting his ass kicked but he eventually starts to git gud, and starts to get in TOO DEEP with the sport.

Idea came to me after doing HMB for a little while and reading "Boys on the Run"

Really? The armor I designed is heavily inspired from what I've worn at club meet-ups. The only thing I took from imagination was actually his kettle-helm/chainmail mask.

You're right though, it's not something super memorable- I'm still trying to find a balance between something that isn't super anime and flashy, and something that's completely dull.

Looking good as always, and congrats on getting permisson to use the music.

One little thing, the way you colored DUPLEXIDE makes it read "dupli-exide" or "dupli- no, wait".
I'm guessing you did it this way either because you wanted the split through the middle or because you felt the split letter would be a good visual representation of... well, the split color scheme. But, right now, it doesn't really work on a lettering basis.

You do seem to put a lot more effort into this project than I have ever seen a reviewer do, that's really nice to see.
>>
>>87751008
It just seems like a mishmash of different styles*, where it's my impression that most practitioners go for historical authenticity except where safety doesn't allow it when making a kit (I know some of the big tournaments make it a requirement). But if it's supposed to be a mishmash of borrowed gear because he's new, I guess it makes sense.

I know it's nitpicking, but I think anyone who checks out a comic about a guy getting into this kind of extreme nerd sport would be interested in that kind of detail.

*specifically, he's got 15th century plate armor with an older style multi-part kettle hat, a skirt of scale mail and a narrow, open-sided tabard that I'm pretty sure fantasy artists just plain made up
>>

Thanks, bro, and thanks for the feedback,I admit that I was kinda of fagot for not doing it right away. But I'm faping to traps regularly so that makes me kinda of one
>>
>>87751408
Yes- the only thing the character owns for himself in that picture are the helmet and longsword. Everything else is "club kit". I'll be doing a bunch of explaining about the sport as well in the background and on side pages and stuff for the readers.

I'm kind of planning on exaggerating the sport anyway- it'll be less safer, a bit more violent (as if it could get more violent), and part of the plot involves him eventually fighting for big money and getting intertwined with some scary people. Obviously none of that really happens in HMB (as far as I know of anyway)
>>
>>87751498
Going from a mishmash of club kit to his own personalized flamboyant suit would provide a neat visual character arc.
Maybe exaggerate the bad fit and maintenance of the club kit a bit? Like, give him gauntlets that don't match, big dents in the large armor plates, straps that have been replaced with duct tape, pins that are supposed to attach to pieces of armor he's not wearing... Something to make it obvious even to people who aren't big nerds.

>Obviously none of that really happens in HMB (as far as I know of anyway)
I hear a lot of rumors about corruption, doping and mob involvement in the eastern European tourneys. Of course, that might just be the west Euros being butthurt that the Russians keep pounding them flat every year at BotN. True or no, it might be worth looking into for inspiration.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the input. I'll close that gap more in the E for readability sake Like what I did in pic related. When you spend hours drawing a word it kind of stops registering mentally as one so it's hard to tell if it's readable without outside help.

And to be honest the "game review" thing is just an excuse to do art I think people will actually see. It's also because I have hundreds of 90s shareware games I can't even find much record of their existence, much less reviews. So I have unique content. Though at this point I have probably put more time and effort than anyone else ever has for game reviews. That's kind of satisfying.

That's kind of what I meant - I like watching reviews every now and then, but I've never seen anyone go the extra mile like this, so your stuff certainly stands out.
Never really thought of that as a possible way of gaining an audience, but I could totally see it work.
One problem might be keeping a frequent enough update schedule though, depending on how much unique art/animation you intend to create for each episode.
>>
>>87752007

>>
>>87752533
if you can look at a tapastic site and see nothing wrong with it, then I guess for you it's not that bad
>>
>>87752149
Well I'm glad that's fixed then.

The fact people are liking it despite it not even being out yet is really self assuring that it's something new and interesting (I've already received around 7 pieces of fan art). The plan is to do video game reviews to garner a small audience and then launch my web-comic that is set in the same sci-fi universe so I'll have an audience to begin with. I feel like if i started with wholly original content it would be an uphill battle to get any viewers.

As for the updating schedule I'll have around 20 or so body animations, reusable face parts for a variety of expressions, a lipsynching system I've already finished and a few other things I'll animate before the first episode even airs. That way I'll have material I can mix around with endless variation, I've got some flack for this but what inspired me here was that it's the way Zone does all their ZTV news episodes and they look pretty good for a single animator. Every episode will have some unique animations and graphics but many of the more varying ones will be in the form of Dupe's own drawings and won't have many frames. I'm confident with the systems I've made I could make one episode every week if needed, each containing 5 games.

Hey guys - I do a comic called Those Unknowable, been at it for over two years now. I posted here a long time ago on a webcomic critique thread and took a lot of the advice to heart - I think there's a very huge leap in quality from when I started and I can't be more pleased.

For those curious it's sort of a more action-oriented simplified take on Lovecraft lore and mythos, with anthro monsters versus humans in a saturday morning cartoon kind of aesthetic.

Have you heard of me? :D If not, and you wanna take the time to check it out, let me know what you think!

New Bits & Bytes page is up. Main characters decide on important aspects of incoming wedding, plus there're recent Indie success guests in the diner.

It's the second time Gretha steals Lakitu's cloud. (see page 51) http://bitsandbytescomic.tumblr.com/

The fact that you got noticed means you can take your portfolio to a con and be recognized.

Yeah, I'm hoping I'll get there soon. Like climbing a mountain, keep my eyes on the summit but be mindful of the steps I have to still take to get there.

>Have so many different ideas you cant progress with anything because as soon as you start working on one, one of the others seems more attractive to work one
>>

Happens to everyone, you just gotta learn to deal.
Nebulous and unspecific ideas are always less scary to work with than concrete ones.
Pick one and force yourself to stick with it. You can still work on other things so long as you do that one first.

Oh, yes, welcome to the club.

Here's what I do: I write the idea down somewhere (a notepad, a TXT file, you choose), so the idea is out of my mind. Then I take a look at everything I have, and decide which one I am more into, right now.

Then I try to compromise. And focus. And yeah, it's difficult... but it's worth a try.

Definitely. It is also really easy to slip a in design element that you'll grow to hate drawing.
God.
