Batman apparently just isn't a good fit for King, he did nothing interesting with the first arc. Tomasi should not be trusted, he's a very Jurgens-tier writer. A lot of Dick's value is in his relationships with other characters. He's a people person in a meta-way as well, he's one of those guys where a team-up is more interesting than a solo venture because he plays well with others. Batman, in contrast, operates better solo, to the point where most people would prefer a stripped-down, Batman-Alfred only dynamic for his stories.

Being a Gary Stu requires more than likability. Likability is just one sign of being a Gary Stu. Sure, Dick is Mr. Popular, but he's lacking in tons of areas that would make him a true Gary Stu. For example, one thing he's lacking is extreme competency. I love Dick but he gets his shit kicked in fairly often and he's generally seen as a worse version of Batman in a lot of ways. He's also often depicted as less intelligent than both Bruce and Tim. He has one thing he's really good at, which is acrobatics.

Depending on what's back in continuity, Dick led the JLA during the Obsidian Age when the big seven were all killed in Atlantis, and was leading the JLA at the very end of the New Earth version of the DCU, right before Flashpoint.
