Alright, the reason I liked Boba Fett back in the day isn't because "he looked cool" or whatever, it's because of John Wagner and Cam Kennedy, in their comics they showed a morally-grey, competent, resourceful bounty hunter that always got the job done. He didn't let personal feelings get in the way of the work, but he wasn't heartless either. Of course, all that is now non-canon, so I guess I'm stuck with the new bloodthirsty, incompetent dumbass that we saw in Aaron's Star Wars. If that and the movies were your only exposure to Boba Fett I'd understand if you saw him in a less favorable light, but I myself always liked the older version of the character.

Oh, and for the record, I do not condone Karen Traviss' nonsense, Boba being some kind of expert Jedi-killing Zen master is stupid as well.

Boba Fett is canonically one of the best bounty hunters alive in the Imperial era. He nearly managed to kill the head of the Jedi Order when he was like 12, almost killed Luke Skywalker, was trained by Jango Fett and Cad Bane, and was regularly hired by Darth Vader who could have chosen the most advanced spies and assassins in the Empire's army over him if he wanted to. Right, that's fair enough. Most people did. I liked those comics too!

But here is my problem;

Firstly, the "incompetent dumbass" we saw in Aarons comic wasn't just invented for the comics. It stemmed from Boba's only real development (in TCW), which in turn stemmed from how Boba was originally portrayed in the OT; A badass-looking hunter character who's gimmick is that he dies in a goofy way.

He's basically one of those cartoon characters that is introduced all badass-like, only to be completely mocked at their expense. That was the point of Boba, which is why he is Canonically like that to this day. For goodness sakes, he screams like a little girl, and the Sarlacc burps when it eats him!

That, for all intents and purposes IS Boba Fett. The comics of the EU almost feel like a completely different character now, because they were written by fanboys who saw the same thing a lot of people do in Boba; a cool costume. So they made a cool guy to fit inside, but the fact is that's just not how Boba is.

Boba is the kid who wears ill-fitting stolen armor, and flies his dads vandalized old ship. He's the kid who got defeated by a blind man (twice!). He's the kid who was trapped in a box and shipped to be some alien kings bride. He's the kid who fell into a sand vagina.

You can't just call everybody who acknowledges this as a newfag. Chances are, if someone is reading Star Wars comics today, they probably read them years ago too. I enjoyed those comics as a kid, but I also acknowledge that the Boba being portrayed by Lucasfilm now really is how Boba always has been, and well... He just isn't cool!

Most Boba Fett fans have only watched the films and defend him just because of his appearance in Episode 5. Some of them also just read the Star Wars wikia page and go "So he escaped the pit?! He's so cool, he's definitely the best now!"

Boba was always intended to be one of the best bounty hunters (or soldiers) from day 1 but he would have always lost too because they wouldn't have him just fucking kill Luke Skywalker out of nowhere. And hey, I am not against him being shown to be successful either. I would fully welcome a comic series for him in fact, maybe even showing him mature and grow, so that he can be seen as more esteemed and competent by ESB. As long as they true to the fact that he is the same Boba Lucas created, and not a fanboys wet dream.

Lucas created a character riddled with mental health problems. It's very clear that the kid in TCW is not right in the head, and it shows in the comics by how reckless and heartless he is. He was hardened by such an awful childhood, but that doesn't mean he is going to suddenly become the Galaxies biggest badass.

I want to see Boba do cool stuff. I want to see him collect some bounties. I also want to see him make mistakes, fuck up, get angry, take things too personally, have daddy issues, and occasionally lose in humiliating ways. I DON'T want to see him become a Mandalorian God, climb out of the Sarlacc Pit, or fight Jedi/Sith with Lightsabers.

That's why I am fine with the considerably less-cool Canon Boba, over the Mary Sue "Boba" from the EU. And seeing as Boba hasn't done much cool stuff in Canon, that's why I (and many others) don't actually see Boba as a cool character any more. For now!

I just realized that once we start getting episodes after A New Hope were totally going to see an episode modelled after Battlefront 2 space battles where in the middle of a battle Ezra gets cocky and decides to fly into a Star Destroyer to destroy it from the inside using bombs only to nearly get himself killed but at the end of the episode he'll steal a TIE-Bomber and blow up the bridge now that the shields are down. There's no way Filioni won't reference that once we get to the main war aspect of the show.
