I liked the first Young Avengers arc where Iron Lad tried to go back in time and prevent his future as Kang from ever happening.

Well that's the difference between time travel as a plot-enabler and time-travel as a plot device.
Doctor Who is a show where time-travel enables most of the plots, but beyond getting people to and from places it doesn't figure into most plots.
Days of Future Past is a story where it's explicitly a plot device.
