The "Planet of the Apes: The Musical" segment never fails to get a chuckle. It's so stupid, but I can't help but love it for how goofy it is.

I think it's because a lot of overly long gags rely too heavily on buildup and very little payoff. The gorge one managed to have plenty of action in it, not to mention the twist at the end when he falls down a second time and a gurney hits him instead of a skateboard.

Winston Churchill wanted to pull an EU3 Byzantium and blockade the straits while invading Constantinople and rapidly taking the Ottomans out of the war, providing a springboard to invade Bulgarian and from there open a third front against Austria

So he sent thousands of colonial ANZAC soldiers lead by British officers who had them charge up hills getting shot at by machine guns and dying horribly in the dirt only to make no real military gains

Gallipoli is considered one of the great battles of Australian and New Zealand military history, as well as one of the many reasons cited for not wanting to join the UK in a smaller post-colonial empire and for gradually changing their constitutions to limit the queen's power over the south pacific

The WB channel in Atlanta was co-owned by Fox so they carried reruns of the Simpsons, and instead of doing actual ads, they'd just play one of the musical segments like this one, 'Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart", and the monorail song, and these ads would air even during Kids WB. Imagine halfway through an episode of Animaniacs, it would cut to commercial and you would have Mr. Burns singing about skinning animals to make clothes.

The difference really does lie in the delivery. In a show like, say, Family Guy, you'll have five minutes of the same joke leading up to an obvious punchline. In earlier Simpsons, you'd have leadup to a longer joke, but it would be peppered with small jokes within that timespan. For example, this joke here >>87700853
could've just been a long drawn out leadup to saying Moe sucks. But they get in multiple jokes at Moe's expense while the buildup of the police officers' expressions add to the whole thing. It's ALL funny, instead of boring leadup to being funny.
>>
>>87700124
There's an emotional build up to it. Homer is shown to care for Bart even going so far as trying to reason with him. The only thing left to do is do the action in Bart's place to show him how dangerous it is.
Then the gag enters its payoff.

You're ain't alone in that position mate, French Canadian here and I can tell you that one of the main reason the whole deal about sovereignty is still going strong nowadays (notwithstanding the politicians who abuse the concept for easy votes) is mainly because the federal government (mainly governed over by Ontarian whom are for the most part britaboo) has a chronic tendency to utterly disregard its own promise when it comes to our governing. Ie; First constitution we had after the failed revolution in Canada ( it did happens, but it was killed before it spread out by the brits whom had reinforced their hold unto the newly acquired colony as to prevent invasion by the USA and to suppress any rebellious movement stirred by the USA own rebellion) said quite clearly that we weren't to be conscripted into any wars, both world wars we were forced to go as conscript (with some of our guys doing legendary deeds like that one soldier who captured an entire german regiment or something on his own because the krauts had btfo his war buddy), the constitution said that the government couldn't make overt and open military actions upon our land next thing we know we are imposed martial law due to some retarded communist going full retard (kind of expected to be honest) and kidnapping/killing some random politican, we had a pretty big chunk of our territory ripped away from us as to give some economic support for newfoundland (in reality it was just to put a stick in our wheel if we ever want to become truly sovereign since we'd have to deal with this clusterfuck as we become our own country since they made sure that one of the fucking border wasn't clearly drawn on the map)

Fuck the brits, its like living with someone you know need you to survive yet does everything in his power to make you feel like utter shit so you won't fuck off elsewhere, kind of like a pimp to his prostitute relationship.

Bart's Dog Gets an F

in the first part of the show, Homer complains from downstairs that the dog is hungry, and she yells down the stairs the obvious idea of feeding the dog, and so Homer says in this whiny, childish voice "yes, master", and then he finds Santa's Little Helper has helped himself to Homer's plate of food. insert obligatory annoyed grunt here.

I wouldn't say it's my favorite gag, and it's definitely not the best one in the show, but it's always the first one I think of, because it's so true to life, that one snippet, and because of that, it turned into a phrase that my wife and I would use whenever the other was asking/telling us to do something we didn't want to do, but were willing to do.

couldn't find a clip on youtube.

>The two bloodiest allied battles in WW1 and the ANZACs were thrown into the grinder each time by British high command.

No. You are lying.

The Australian catastrophe at the Nek was entirely of their own making, thanks to Colonel Antill and General Hughes. And it served as a diversion for the New Zealand attack, not the British landing at Suvla. Their retarded habit of charging without orders didn't help much either.

Once it was known the Nek offensive was in trouble the Royal Welsh Fusiliers were sent to try and support them (suffering heavily in the process) and by the campaign's end the UK was left with ~34,000 dead and ~78,00 wounded to Australia's ~8,000 and ~19,000. 'Cause, you know, those dastardly Brits made the colonial soldiers do all the work while they sat back and watched, right?

>Will all humor be right wing now?
Ironically, yes, if for the simple reason that political correctness is killing comedy on the left.

95% of what passes for "comedy" on left wing shows and routines is basically just calling people dozens of different variations of stupid/racist/bigoted/etc etc etc over and over again.

Political incorrectness is what won the Republicans the election this year and it's what will probably lead to the comeback of the conservative comedians over the next few years.

Yeah, most Simpsons games were seriously lackluster.
It's like they can't manage to get something completely new and not "popular franchise played by the Simpsons" like Road Rage (blatant Crazy Taxi) and even Hit & Run (GTA 3) were, but Radical's games were just special in many ways.
The Simpsons Game sucks, though.

The length of a gag isn't the problem. The problem lies in the lack of impact - it can be as simple as a punchline without proper setup (or vice versa), but it often has to do with jokes being born from forced situations and non-sequiturs than from character and plot.

The gorge jump and its ultimate result are rooted in Homer's character and the plot of that episode. The average Family Guy cutaway is just a stupid joke that has nothing to do with the episode and often doesn't feature any of the main characters.

Horseshit. Social commentary has always had a place in comedy. Not all comedy, but some of the best comedy.

If nobody put agendas or social commentary into their comedy it'd just be slapstick, Don Rickles insult litanies, and Seinfeldian 'Ja Ever Notice? routines. Not to say there's anything wrong with any of those things, but for fuck's sake, cunts whining on twitter about Tosh's rape jokes does not invalidate political opinions in comedy.
>>
if you take 'social commentary' out of comedy, all you have left is monkey cheese purple monkey dishwasher!!!
>>
WHAT'S MY MONEY DOING IN YOUR HOUSE, FRED?
>>
>>87718139

The problem is, a lot of "politically incorrect" humor, historically, was just making fun of faggots, or making retard jokes, or talking about how black people are pretty stupid and chinese people are bad drivers or how rape's even funnier when clowns do it and shit like that. It was politically incorrect because you were saying insensitive or cruel things without regard for social consequences. It was edgy for the sake of edginess, and often very, very lazy.

Laziness just doesn't cut it anymore when you're saying transgressive stuff. We're running out of social groups you can just toss against the wall and point and laugh at. Conservatives were the last safe target for lazy "look at him and laugh" comedy, because even though it seems like libfaggotry has taken over this country (I say this as a libfag)...religiosity, "bootstraps," etc still drive a lot of our legislative decisions and none of the creative types in cities give a shit about rank-and-file poor white conservatives in meth country, so comics could point at assholes like Mitch McConnell and just laugh at how out of touch they sounded without realizing they sound like fucking aliens to half the country.

I don't think we'll see a sudden renaissance of conservative comedy, just a resurgence in lazy fag and tranny jokes. But hopefully the liberal establishment will learn that you can't just point and laugh at conservatism and expect half the country to laugh along with you, and well-meaning retards on tumblr will stop bitching about brilliant but edgy comedians like Bo Burnham.

There's a few levels to it. The first is the idea of a Planet of the Apes musical being done at all is pretty ridiculous. By the time the episode came out the movie would have been nearly thirty years old, the most recent movie in the franchise would have been around twenty years old and the most recent tv show would have been dead for a similar time.

It's like making a musical based on Starship Troopers. McClure treating it as his big comeback just emphasizes how pathetic he is.

The low quality of the musical is the next layer. The song is a ripoff of Amadeus, the actors are awful, the lead in to the song is hamfisted, there's an ape dressed as a sexy nurse, they have shit coreography interspersed with break dancing from one guy, and a handful of dumb jokes.

Homer and Bart loving the musical is a show of how much you're supposed to find the thing ridiculous.

Then the final sequence in the show. Very light and happy music while the astronaut finds out the human race destroyed itself. The ape proudly parade past him as he joins them in song, quickly blowing over that fact in time for him to declare his love for Dr. Zaius. The tone is all over the place.

Basically it's funny because the whole production is shit but no one seems to understand that in the show, so it's ridiculous in both concept and execution.

>>
>>87729066
If you can't take aim at the ridiculousness of both extremes, you are a shitty peddler of ideals, not a comedian. Viewers should never feel like a comedian is trying to convince them to join a cause instead of have a laugh. The same vibe is had by educational TV. An adult can't watch things like Sesame Street with the same conviction as, say, the Muppet Show. The message might be important, but you should still feel like you're being talked down to.
>>
I like the simpsons website, especially the interactive character bios. https://web.archive.org/web/20050628233513/http://www.thesimpsons.com/characters/home.htm
>>
>>87734747

Sure, your art suffers if you refuse to mock your team even a little bit. That's why I like Bo Burnham, who traffics extensively in gay jokes and liberal mockery but also takes down conservatives several notches and has demonstrated that offstage he's an eminently kind person who cares about everyone his comedy affects.

I know 4chan as a whole hates (((Jon Stewart))), but his message of "you're not special" to young liberals and firebrand criticism of left-wing hypocrites who refuse to stand up for their ideals mattered just as much as his unrelenting mockery of the American right.

The Simpsons, funnily enough, is one of the best examples of cutting but unbiased political commentary. It gives real respect to Marge's concerns over Itchy and Scratchy's violence while also pointing out her censorious ideas can quickly spread to art she approves of. And one of its best episodes mocked lazy union workers uninterested in their own benefits and ghoulish abusers of employees in equal measure.

I dunno, I just think "keep politics out of comedy" is fundamentally lazy, even when you're condemning preachy jokes. Not every liberal comedian is as on-the-nose as Seth McFarlane, and comedy would be a more boring place without the occasional railing against one political side or another.
>>
>>87735086
I'm also not of the opinion of "keep politics out" for the same reason. Early Simpsons proved quite well that there is humor to be had.

I avidly believe that you have to point out the absurdity in everything or stacking the deck makes you too blatantly more in it to push ideas on people rather than laughs. At which point everyone in the audience should be deeply questioning why they are listening to such a soapbox tirade. A thoughtful person tries to understand multiple angles, because objectivity lies somewhere in the middle.

This chapter is probably my favourite, I couldn't find the video in English

>Now you need to worm an agenda into your comedy stylings.

To be fair, most people has a set of beliefs that would more often than not leak into something as a comedy routine. Being absolutely objective is almost impossible.
>>
>>87738894
That may be, but comedy should have humor as the ultimate objective. It cannot coexist with the need to recruit. Not to its full potential.

I'm not the same anon that was asking the previous questions.
I asked a question and no one can give me an answer to the logic that makes such a joke follow, is it a reference to something, was it an expression at the time?
Because otherwise it is a poor quality joke that really reaches to get to it's conclusion.
In other words, shit.

Anon, it's okay that you're autistic, but you really have to learn when to shut the fuck up and let the regular people talk to each other.

It's a jump your mind is supposed to make, because of the rhyming scheme. You recognize the rhyme, then read the previous name, and then make the connection on your own.

You take a few seconds to complete the rhyme and then laugh. Because it is unexpected, and the human mind is built to find patterns.

No the robotic Richard Simmons was a deleted scene. What happens in the actual episode is they just go inside and lock the door, so Homer goes away feeling dejected.

Also you forgot that when Smithers blasts it in the face, it heals like the T-1000.
>>
>>87741296
Couple parts to it.

First is that Moe is acting out of character and using words/terms he's probably only read about before.

You also have the short gag of Moe dancing. He's a bitter, hatefilled man made up mostly of regrets and failures. Him knowing how to dance in a modern style (for the time) is entirely unexpected.

Then you have the reveal of what the self defense element is, which is to carry a gun (which yeah, of course that will discourage aggression). But the sudden change is equally unexpected.

You could also imagine the aftermath of a teacher pulling out a shotgun and blasting off a few rounds, as well as Moe trying to explain it to the cops if you want. Which would have some comedic moments in it.
