Only reason Fifth Element was any good it's because it's a blatant rip off on Moebius/Jodorowsky comics

Luc Besson was never a "visionary" on anything and his movies mostly suck. Or else you think the Taken movies and Taxi 2 were masterpieces.

>>
>>87689488
Agreed, the comic isn't even that great, either. It is workmanlike genre BD. I think it is okay at best.
>>
Isn't Valerian supposed to be flawed and blockheaded, but also manly and charming? Why instead we got a young Justin Bieber wannabe babby who acts like an immature frat boy?

Isn't Laureline supposed to be independent and intelligent, but also charming? Why instead we got a grumpy grump grump who acts like someone pissed in her coffee?

The CGI looks pretty though (if a bit too Moebius-y)
>>
>>87707165
The comic was pretty much Barbarella Lite.

It was aeons ahead of American sci fi comics of the time, though.
>>
>>87690785

I'm just irked they're nothing like in the comics, AND unlikeable to boot.

Judging by the trailer the movie has absolutely nothing to do with the "Thousand Planets" tome then?
Not that I mind, because it's one of the weaker anyways, but it's a really weird decision to use it as a subtitle then.
If anything it looks a like "Ambassador of the Shadows", which is pretty good.
Also it better have the Jewgouz.

What's worse I think, is that in the comics I remember Valerian and Laureline being a passionately loving couple, if not without their problems.
Instead what we get is the same old, same old sex-negative trope of "man is a horny perv who only thinks of sex, woman is chaste and doesn't want any of that".
As >>87707488 said, if those were OCs, it could be fine, but not with Valerian and Laureline.

Shingouzs.
A species of dwarfish alien triplet spies. They will manage to find a buyer for anything. Their planet is a barren wasteland so it's the only line of work they have. Also exclusive alcoholics, since they can't take solid foods.
There's a running gag in one arc where they follow the heroes across planets, bartering in the background at every occasion, with increasing stake every time, ala One Red Paperclip.
tl; dr: Useful and likable joke characters.

>>87707981
Valerian has a lots of flaws, including some weakness for women and a strict adherence to protocol. I never heard anyone call the series mysoginistic, even if it makes fun of some aspects of feminism from time to time.
But I'm more worried about fiery Laureline becoming nothing more than the serious half of a classical hollywood duo. Fuck, half of the fun in the comics is the nuances in the relationship between the two heroes, and the resulting barter.

My biggest problem with Delevigne is that Laureline is supposed to be charming, not just with Valerian but it also helps her find diplomatic solutions and common ground with the characters they encounter. Delevigne plays some sort of somber and grumpy edgelord who just punches everyone in the face including Valerian.

Valerian chara is the classic middle french stereotype. or so called "pariser douchebag". athletic with black hair and better social skills. the Loureline is typical Normandy girl. athletic fit naturally beauty with direct and direct character farmer-fisher girl forced to face more complicated world outside of her town or village.

btw its classic french chemes. you can find it in many french romance and comic books.

The animated series already diverges quite a bit from the comic.

Basically, in the comic, the earth disappearance plot only starts in the last third of the series, and they find out reasonably quickly why it disappeared (God did it because he wasn't getting any royalties on his creation. You read that right.) and it's only the future earth they came from that disappears, replaced by a new timeline, our own, since the original timeline hinged on a nuclear war taking place in 1986 (as the first book had been written long before that).

Also, the girl being from the middle ages really wasn't a factor after the first story (and that story wasn't actually published in book form until much later).

The movie is based on "the ambassador of shadows", a book that happens long before earth's erasure, though IIRC the big multispecies space station it takes place in also is in the animated series.

It'll probably be pretty bad. I'll dl it just to look at the design and the landscapes i guess.

Well, new Star Trek is way better than new Star Wars, so.

Don't worry, Valerian cucked her too
>>
>>87689337
shes so damn fugly.
>>
>>87728681
She really and truly is. I guess her gross looking unshaped eyebrows make her look different, but jesus fuck she really isn't attractive in any way shape or form. Doesn't help that she's just as ugly on the inside as well.

>>87727916
I can predict each of those articles will feature the word "oversexualized" at some point

There's also "Heroes of the Equinox" where he literally repopulate a whole planet.

More like Tommen Baratheon.
>>
>>87728725
youre right, her inner foulness has corrupted how she looks on the outside. i know a guy thats a sound guy, specifically doing hookups on lavaliers and wireless mics, who met her and a bunch of the people that were involved with suicide squad, he said everyone else was happy as hell and friendly to each other and to staff.

except her. she was full on raging bitch.

margo robbie signed literally everything someone put in front of her, and did peoples voicemails as Harley, as did will smith.

she refused to talk to anyone. he has an adopted foster sister that was severely abused with emotional problems, and he said carra acted just like her, down to tone of voice.
>>
>>87728886
I absolutely believe it. There was an interview I saw where she had to talk about some stupid movie she did call paper airplanes, and she was just being shitty and showing to everyone there and watching that she really didn't want to be there and had absolutely no interest in promoting her movie. So the news crew saw this as it was happening, and literally called her out on it. It was pretty great. She just looks, sounds, and acts like a massive all around cunt to the T. And she can't act.
>>
>>87728886
Will Smith did voicemails as Harley? Cool
>>
>Cara Develigne

Into the trash it goes
>>
>>87728837
She's more closer to jauffre.

Books 1 to 9 can be read alone without amajor issues. 9 and 10 are actually a really nice arc, that includes everything that made the series famous.
11 to 13 are a major game changer in the setting, so it works better if you get attached to the characters first by reading all the previous books.

14 and 15 also work well alone.

Then it's the end of the series until book 21, and the quality suffers a bit IMO.

It's quite hard to recommend one book over the other because they don't have much in common: In one you'll be following 4 gladiators in an arena, the next one is gonna be an ecological fable about natives, and the next one will be mercenary investigations in a cyberpunk city. But try book 9.

But I like how you seem to think that the french are a hivemind hellbent on the destruction of the US.

You mean Wake/Sillage?

As female leads go, I'd like to see Marlysa. I'm starved for campy swashbucking, and the shitstorm should be fun to watch as well.

Am I correct in assuming that the original comics Valerians looks were inspired by legendary french actor Alain Delon?
