I just think Aaron could have shown that by showing her reaction *after* a cathartic page of Wally/Holly, as a follow-on. Doing it this way gives Kirbee greater prominence than the main pair whose relationship has been carrying the comic for so long, and the distraction kinda dulls the emotional payoff of what should be a major plot moment entirely focused on them. I can only hope the next page compensates a bit by just being Wally and Holly.

I'm of the opinion that the Unity and Boat arc made me like Holly outstandingly less than I did during the Milk Trial arc. I don't know what Aaron was going for but he easily torpedoed a character I previously rooted for and cared about.

Nope, I don't give a shit about shipping. Here's where Holly started falling from my esteem:

1. Post Milk Trial Holly foists herself on Wally despite the way she handled the Flask arc. The criticism that she can't handle Wally's way of life is proven during the following arcs.

2. Meeting Jim and Sarah as Topsiders. After subduing them it's Holly who asserts murdering them both. Their existence brought from Wally's mercy is what allowed them to escape and travel through the wastes in a transport vehicle.

3. Holly's obsession with Clive. This obsession with "they're a human being" was absent from mercy to Jim and Sarah as stated earlier but applied wholesale on Clive's plasticized brain. Her priorities are even more fucked coming out of Unity.

4. Holly's matronly trauma. Her treatment of Chic in general past Unity is awful. The relevations on the Boat do not forgive her hypocrisy of placing her own interests against the safety of her community and even family. Lynn was right: who in their damn mind that cares so much about their family and safety carry grenades with them that arm themselves?! A lot of that sadness in Holly's past stems from her not listening to Lynn and doing what she thought was right (a trait she still has).

5. Holly's treatment of Wally and Kirbee. Kirbee went out of her way to save her and Chic AND Wally. Despite this she wanted to cut Kirbee and run despite the fact she had no home to do to and all her people likely died in the fire or Topsider attack. Because Wally defended Kirbee Holly marked Wally unfairly in jealousy and suspicion. If anything Holly being impossible post-Unity pushed Wally and Kirbee closer since Wally couldn't emotionally unwind from what happened at Unity himself.

Holly didn't save Wally, Allie and her dead friends did. Holly wanted to ditch Kirbee. After Kirbee saved their posse and had her home burn down to the ground. It may not have been a great place, but it was a home for the lizard stuck on cloud 9.

It's shocking I know, but not everyone thinks Holly is great. The sum of her 'good' in Endtown was mostly supplemented by the actions of other characters (Allie originally saved Wally, Maude was the driving force behind Linda's assimilation) and her good amounts to having sex with Wally. Her positive presence in the comic as a supplement vanishes once the narrative leaves Endtown.

The most I'll give her is that she saved Chic from JimGod, but even that sentiment vanishes knowing how she treated him afterwards.

I also have to disagree on the "Only Allie saved Wally" thing, Allie may have saved his body, but Holly saved his soul, so to speak. As for Linda, I doubt she'd have stuck around long enough for Maude to help her without Holly's intervention, and the waitress job Holly gave her started her reaching out to people.

I can't say the same for me. To me, Holly's problem is not that she's traumatised - everyone's traumatised, though that's not to say individual traumas don't matter - it's that her particular trauma and attendant feelings (I would say guilt is probably primary) drove her into a cycle of on-and-off madness, coming in different intensities, similar to Sparkplug, who had at least one very similar traumatic experience.

When she's fairly lucid and has a strong sense of identity, she's friendly, supportive, helpful, loving, even courageous... and cognisant of things that might be going wrong with her.

When she's irrational and "coming apart inside", she's paranoid, obsessive, impulsive, vindictive, vicious and even suicidal.

It was the lucid Holly that helped Wally, Linda and Chic, it was the irrational one that threatened Chic afterwards, rejected Kirbee and clung so desperately to Clive. I admire the lucid one, and since the irrational one cannot think straight, I find it hard to hate her, I only pity her.

Before the trauma she wasn't the best person, but I can't say she was bad because that would ignore her naivete, background and flawed perspective, and I can't say she's still the same person, because that would ignore a lot of growing time, not to mention the differences in behaviour between her old self and her irrational self.
