The theatrical market was way too niche to get good returns during a time when animation in the west wasn't doing to hot. At the same time the tv market was ever growing, but it had lost the "family appeal" of the Flintstones and went for the "kids appeal". Then the Simpsons happened and reawakened the market for "adult" cartoons. Afterwards you had South Park, Duckman, MTV and the birth of [AS] and Fox' non-Simpsons stuff. Comedy cartoons are also MUCH easier to create than any other genera because why waste time making an continuum story when you can just create episodic episodes that can be reaired at any time without needing to watch a previous episode

Without getting into the stigmatism that animation and comics are 'only' a children's medium, the problem is that an animated project needs to be able to do something that live action can't AND be appealing enough to garner an audience.

Any kind of drama? Cheaper to film live actors than draw it.

Science fiction/fantasy is a good genre to go with but it's kind of a lateral move, since you could spend just as much building a dragon castle set or make spaceship minatures/CGI and green screen the actors.

Horror *could* be a possible genre the medium could thrive, but for horror to be profitable, it has to either unique or thoroughly appealing, or it's an attempt to cash in on someone else's unique horror story and in those situations with imitations.

Comedy, on the other hand, is the exception, because adult humor (and I don't just mean boob jokes or sex innuendo) is distinct from children's fair in the eyes of society, and animated comedy can go farther with the jokes and situations. Also, in a cynical way, humor animation doesn't need to be lavish and is much cheaper to produce. South Park's over the top and oftentimes insane satire couldn't be replicated with a set in front of a live studio audience. Same for the Simpsons and while it's a repulsive show, even Family Guy can do more and get away with more than if it was a live comedy.

There was a real effort to put them out by ambitious animators from the early 70's to the early 80's.

The 70's was the era of New Hollywood, when directors like Martin Scorsesse, George Lucas, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, ect. where able to make artistically challenging and financially profitable films. Auteur theory was "in" and the Director was God. They where given massive budgets and very little creative interference from the studios.

This was reflected in animated movies like the ones from Ralph Bakshi (Lord of the Rings, Heavy Traffic, Fritz the Cat, American Pop, Coonskin) and the Canadian animation studios that produced Heavy Metal and Rock N Rule.

In 1980 the western Heaven's Gate was released by directed by Michael Cimino was a hugely publicized financial and artistic disappointment (coupled with highly publicized on set overspending and delayed shooting) that lead to Transamerica Corporation to sell of United Artists to MGM and effectively close down that studio.


TL;DR: Bad financial timing, the fact that animated films are time consuming, slow to react to change and hard to market led to them being pretty much scrapped for the last 40 years.

I wished for Tron Uprising to be the breakthrough in cinematic-quality tv series.
I was needlessly disappointed with absolute dog shit writing paired with the low framerate CGI.
I've seen more mature writing in The Last Airbender and better flash animation in Motorcity.

Justice League, Young Justice, Teen Titans and Avengers are commercial garbage where the characters pretend to act mature and edgy for the sake of entertainment. I much prefered the original comic books of the TEEN titans where they actually have a personality.

TV series, unless it is comedy, don't do well because unlike movies which can be just someone pet's project or faith in success, they have to rely on staying alive or being renewed on a TV network that might care for the series in question. A movie, and not just an animated movie here, can do more shit when they only have to worry about a small run using a story that may or not be concluded under and / or above two hours. That is why the only adult cartoons outside Japan you will see are still just movies that pander to a niche. Much like series in live action are saturated with crime show and sitcoms, we are saturated on comedy cartoons until someone gets lucky and makes a serious cartoon series that can make bank and get the executives to cash the fad, like The Simpsons kick started the adult comedy boom in the '90s.
