From what little we saw of him, though he seemed to have similar issues to her mother (except trade anime for goth) he appeared more stable and less extreme. Plus, we know he actually has a job. I somehow doubt her mother does given her personality and issues. I assume they probably live off his alimony and child support payments, which means he's probably doing alright. He probably owns the book store he works at, or at least is a manger there.

Though, I suppose it wouldn't have mattered if she decided to stay with her dad, as it's heavily implied that he's afraid of her mother, and you know she would've come for her at some point anyway.

The Otaku/Goth combo isn't the problem, it's that they try to force it on their kid so hard they destroy any chance for that kid to find their own identity independent of it. They purposefully make her act and think in a way that alienates her from her peers and only re-enforces their control. Replace Goth/Otaku with any religion, stupid hobby, or crazy ideals or lifestyle. This shit happens all the time, although in the USA with fundamentalist paranoid Christianity most often. I think the choice of Otaku in this case is to make the aspects that are common to all these cases clear without focusing specifically on one that has been confirmed to happen. Although at this point it seems like its only a matter of time before it does.
