This part always gets me

The, as in THE, most singularly powerful, capable, absolutely Almighty character in all of fiction.
Superman
Fucking. Superman.
Who can destroy planets, crust galaxies, fight time, and punch reality.

Can't save his own dad.

Massive Coronary Failure, of all things, is what brings Superman down to our level. Makes him mortal, makes him human. He flies as hard as he can, as fast as he can, and he still can't save his Pa.
It never fails to bring a tear to my eye, but also makes me feel human. Because if SUPERMAN of all people can feel this helpless and feeble, then I guess I can, too.
Without shame or reservation.

It's one of the many things that makes All-Star Superman great, truly great. It makes the God of the American Dream human, despite all his vast feats and stupendous adventures.

It makes him real.

Imagine how much better Man of Steel would have been if, in the aftermath of some supreme act of heroism, Superman paused.

Amidst the throngs of happy, grateful people he just saved. He brushes off their praise, as helping people is simply a part of his character, it's part of who he is, the man his father raised.

He pauses.

His face, first elated, then confused, which shifts inexorably to horror.

He can no longer hear his father's heatbeat.

He's flying, faster, and faster, and faster still. Until the very air around him burns with friction; an entire world traversed in the span of a heartbeat.

He's too late.

His father, a man he respected and revered as an absolute his entire life, lies dead before him, beyond the reach of even the Man of Steel.

The Last Son of Krypton falls to his knees, helpless.

Tell me to my fucking face that that wouldn't have been a million times more awesome than 'STOP, INVINCIBLE SON'
