Should this new wave of SJW-tier writing and viewpoint coming from new-canon bother how much we enjoy Star Wars? I do enjoy the series, but I don't enjoy how they're going to be jamming their narrative down out throats. Albeit, I do like how canon is better treated than the previous EU where everything was a mess.

Maybe you're so steeped in your own politics that they prevent you from enjoying things, so much so that they cause you to see things that aren't there.

Regardless, if you can't handle seeing or reading something that expresses an opinion that's different from your own, you're exactly the sort of zealot that Lucas warned us about.

They're talking about the writer of Rogue One tweeting about how the movie is about women leaders leading a diverse group of people against a white male patriarchy.

I wonder how much of that was purposefully put into the film or what's just the writers trying to save face for losing the election. I wonder how the director and Disney feels.

>Regardless, if you can't handle seeing or reading something that expresses an opinion that's different from your own, you're exactly the sort of zealot that Lucas warned us about.

That's the thing. Different opinions are alright by me. Star Wars is definitely on the left-leaning side of entertainment and its one of my favorite series. But there's an air of moral militarism that permeates in the franchise recently.

>cuck wendig

Its not just that dude, though yes, there are far better entertainment materials in the new canon.

In defense of the writer, that wasn't what they said.

They compared the Empire to White Supremacists and called the Rebellion a diverse group lead by Strong Women.

While I don't agree with this idea, as the Empire is shown in Canon to be okay with any individual willing to serve so long as they are useful, the writing was trying to convey the marginalization they feel from the recent election and aftermath.

Now, their tweets are clearly wrong, but were meant to convey that the Empire is comparable to a group that subjects outsiders to it's will.

He just did it really distastefully.
>>
>>87633418
I thought he said they were white supremacists. Where are we getting this other stuff?

Oh hell, not like it matters anyway. I mean I cannot fault someone for looking at the Empire and mostly seeing white dudes. Blame the guy who bought 50 billion cans of white armor paint. So the writer isn't aware of Rae Sloane or Thanoth? Hardly the end of the world.

Feels like people are trying to make this into a bigger fuss than it really is. There's got be something better to talk about. Shame we're stuck without an episode this weekend.
>>
>>87633454
The Rebellion has always been pretty matriarchal, bro, what with Leia and Mothma.

>trying to save face for losing the election
They've been making this movie for 2-3 years and the election ended 3 days ago.

>>87633457
He's not entirely wrong. No, the Empire wasn't a white supremacist group, but it was certainly human supremacist. Honestly, very little of what he said was inaccurate.
>>
>>
>>87633571
He said white supremacists but had human there in parentheses to specify. Mas and Thrawn are not the norm, and Sheev himself may not be specialist, but the Empire at large is. Also they're space Nazis.

I kind of wonder why the Empire has to be human supremacist now. Almost all of the galaxy is under their rule except for outer-rim territories, so wouldn't that mean that most of the imperial aligned worlds have tons of aliens on them? Why enact human supremacist laws in a very diverse culture?

>>87633703

Mas Amedda
>>
>>87633585
I don't know about the Empire being human supremacist. Oh it would hardly be a huge shock for an evil empire, but I think it is more being stuck within the confines of the OT. They had so much trouble with the aliens they did have, there was no way they were going to be able to fit them into scenes with the stormtroopers. Plus George preferred the uniformity of their armor for intimidation purposes. Probably one of the reasons he envisioned them as a clone army back then.

If Rebels put a bunch of aliens everywhere working with the Empire it would look a lot weirder compared to the OT. We do know there are aliens working for the Empire, and not just the Inquisitors, but also people like Thrawn. We know there are alien worlds loyal to the Empire just as they were to the Republic. Was it weird that the Republic had so many aliens and yet everyone we saw in their military (who wasn't a clone) was human? It just seems to be the way it works out. In Star Wars there are a shit ton of humans in the galaxy. A sheer numbers game that tends to limit the visibility of aliens.

Remember that the Republic military was overwhelmingly human too. The clones are easy so discount them. That still leaves those people in the Republic ship who brought Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to Naboo. All the Senator Guards, too. Every non-clone officer like Admiral Kilian...Some other human guy I cannot recall the name of who died in his first appearance. Tarkin, naturally.

I wouldn't call the Republic overwhelming human centrist, but for whatever reason their military tends to be almost all human. I'm having trouble thinking of any non-humans who weren't Jedi...

Orn Free Ta was still part of the Empire. Shows up in Lords of the Sith. He kind of disappears after Cham's forces take down that Star Destroyer and Sheev just assumes his fat ass managed to survive.

That's the perfect time to re-introduce Senators to see how they are coping with nearing-two decades of Empire rule. Then show their reactions to Sheev committing suicide by shutting down the Senate.

Since it's known to Sheev that Mothma is the leader of the Rebellion, could he know that Bail is helping too? Would this whole mess of Mothma and Bail's team causing Sheev's greatest weapon be the reason he shuts down the Senate? We never did get a reason for it.

>Would this whole mess of Mothma and Bail's team causing Sheev's greatest weapon be the reason he shuts down the Senate?

Probably, which if in Rogue One that Mothma is exposed to being a rebel leader, giving a proper narrative for Sheev to relieve the Senate indefinitely.

Don't get me wrong, I actually like it this way. This means that after they chased off the CIS and captured Tambor the war didn't return, as it had previously done with places like Geonosis.

It just doesn't seem to mesh well with the previous episodes and how Cham was first introduced to us. later season I guess they decided to change things up. It's not necessarily canon breaking, but it is pretty awkward to try to match them up that way.

It's already been talked about. The problem, as I see it, is there is a bit of a disconnect. Cham, when talking with Mace, never seems like he worked with any Jedi or the Republic Army. There's nothing that hints that he fought along side them, then they were overwhelmed so he claimed the Republic had failed and abandoned them, then the forces on the planet died so the twi'leks could escape and then the Republic dropped food crates for them.

Gobi flat out tells them that Cham feels betrayed but he'll eventually get over it, and yet none of that is even hinted at earlier. The obvious reason of course is because this was a later episode, however because of that you think they could have made it sync up better.

I prefer the old theory that the way Sheev "disbanded" the Senate was locking the door and then cutting loose on them with lighting and hurling around senate pods. Finally working out more than two decades of frustration of having them get in the way of his Unlimited Power.

Funny thing is when I first saw this joke someone freaked out because, gosh, the Emperor can't let anyone know he's a Sith! For some reason that guy thought there would be survivors. I just assume Sheev covered his ass by saying that they ordered some bad nerf at the senate commissary and sadly there were no survivors.

Good thing Mom Mothma was chilling with Rogue One. And so lucky Bail was safe on Alderaan. Wait, what's that shadow overhead? Are we having an eclipse already?

This. It's organised but the stories rarely have the heart and reach the same heights that some of the EU's books did. Seems the main reason a lot of fans buy the books now is not for the enjoyment or the story, but to see how it connects to the rest of the canon and then move onto the next. It feels very hollow at times. If you can only enjoy things that are canon then I feel bad for you.
>>
>>87634097
The only thing I can think of it mentioning Seastriker having mothers one time in passing and never being brought up again.
Hell it might not even be that they are lesbians but maybe his planet has a raised by the tribe mentality and all the elder women of his town were considered his 'mother'. They did seem pretty hippie-dippy.
>>
>>87635379
I think the whole "movies every year" plan really puts the potential range of the books back a bit. Where the books could have done a multi-book saga at some point (like Aftermath but more, and not specifically crafted for a movie after it), they now have to settle for the movies potentially taking that plot for themselves instead.

While we are waiting for the whole 'movie every year' thing to settle in, liking the books just because they are canon isn't that bad of a situation. Once there's more freedom for the books, then it would be an issue.
>>
>>87635442
Mystery Box and shorter timelines for the Sequel Trilogy don't really help either. Like Episode 8 starts immediately after 7, so there isn't much room to do stuff in-between.

I'm hoping they focus on just doing Anthology stuff for a few years after Episode 9 before doing another big trilogy (probably an Old Republic reboot).
>>
>>87635379
>If you can only enjoy things that are canon then I feel bad for you.
I see people mention this a lot, but I have never met anybody who actually shares this sentiment. Chances are, if you are reading the Canon books, you probably read some of the EU too.

It's really unfair to judge all of the Canon books and its readers like that, there are plenty of really enjoyable stories in Canon, and we're only 3 years in.

Yes it's true the books are currently mostly supplementary, because we're getting so many movies. But some pretty important stuff HAS been in the books too.

And if you compare with the EU, most of the EU was like this too. Heir to the Empire and the likes were not even close to being the majority of the EU.

That's just what happens, it's been handed to the fans. Maybe the wrong kind of fans but it's what Lucas wanted to do when he sold it and nothing can change that now. It's a shame all artists do now is use their platform to preach their personal politics all the time, especially Marvel comics. But what can ya do?

Times change, Lucasfilm is teeming with so called progressive millennials under K.Kennedy who's probably a devout feminist herself, this has been the way since Lucas left. And the more moderate older gen that have stuck around are the only beacons of talent left like Filoni. So at least he's training an apprentice guys!

Yeah, that was kind of a bummer. Worse was that whole prison arc picking up the character of the spy. It was so damn obvious who he was, which, okay, isn't the worst thing in the world, but then they didn't really do anything interesting with that arc. Maybe Sana and Aphra having a past together? Or seeing some IG-RM droids (or was it a variant?) Ah well parts of the main comic have been really hit and miss.

Fortunately we never found out about the ranking system. I'm sure the point about Anakin's isn't that he's super powerful because he sure as hell wasn't for most of his early career. I thought it was more an indication of him being unusual since Qui-Gon was convinced he was a vergence in the force. If the Force was his daddy I suppose having an unusually high midi-chlorian count would be a damn good indicator.

>>87636159
It's an old debate, and who the hell knows if it was still true even before Lucas left. He gave an interview to Rolling Stones about it and mentioned that what happened to Anakin on Mustafar limited him.

Personally the impression I got from later TCW is that Anakin's injuries on Mustafar didn't mean shit to his true potential. It's not like losing his limbs and skins worth of midi-chlorians should dampen that too much. Towards the end Lucas was knocking more towards spiritualism again. I think what screwed Vader over ultimately, besides Sheev being very careful not to make his Apprentice so powerful he wakes up one day with a pillow over his face, is Anakin was relying on the Dark Side.

Nu Canon seems to be running in that direction when we get some of Vader's psychology in Lords of the Sith. Especially early on when Vader is musing about how wrong Yoda is in regards to the strength of anger.

I guess it is a moot point anyway with Lucas gone. With Star Wars fans have a huge tendency to demand canon (at least fans at our level) rather than leave anything open to interpretation. Maybe this is something to bring up to Pablo, maybe not...

Heroes on Both Sides and the S6 Clovis arc was peak Padme for me desu.

Shame Filoni never got to make the arc about heavily pregnant Padme hiring Ahsoka as a bodyguard while she brought together the separatists single-handed to end the war during the outer rim sieges only for Palpatine to be kidnapped before they could sign the peace treaty.

She also had an arc with Anakin planned with her meeting Tikkes who hates Palps and it sows the seeds for the delegation of 2000 and her and Anakin have a disagreement over Palps again. They would've gone to Mon Cala again to meet Lee Char again.

That was a real thing btw, planned for season 8.
>>

>With Star Wars fans have a huge tendency to demand canon (at least fans at our level) rather than leave anything open to interpretation.
I don't mind many things in Star Wars being defined, but some fans take it too far and look for minutiae in most things that need no explanation, and then blow it out of proportion when there is no answer. They forget that even when the franchise is host to a bunch of small details, some things are just fine the way they are without intricate explanation. A lot of these people also let it override common sense when it comes to new material, requiring things that are obvious to be documented or else they will never accept something otherwise.

Sorry for pivoting from the topic, but it just bothers me that people forgo the story and a 10 seconds of critical thinking afterwards or else they continue to willingly cry inaccuracy.

>>
>>87636283
Lucas made it very clear Anakin would never reach his full potential. He will always be 80% the power of Palpatine. The LSG have been fulfilling this. While they have made Vader extraordinarily powerful, he's nowhere near Palpatine's strength. They haven't been shy to hide Vader is fearful of his master as well.

>>87636286
>I'm sure diplomacy with Dooku and Grievous is incredibly likely
You're forgetting she nearly succeeded but did not know of Dooku and Sidiou's plans. The Separatist council felt the same way the Republic senate did about the war. It was something no one wanted but happened due to the Sith manipulating both sides that no one was aware about. Padme was really the only sane person in Star Wars. It's a shame no one took her seriously.
>>
>>87636433
You had a fair point and I think you made it well. I don't mind the details either, I suppose, I do think they're nice and I like that they keep open lines of communication with the fans. Maybe I think we just ultimately take our canon WAY too seriously sometimes. These threads had, and maybe still do, an impression as being completely canon obsessed. People felt they couldn't discuss any of the old EU material. At the same time, yeah, we did have people who were mixing EU material with Nu Canon, which isn't always a bad thing but the two really aren't meant to intermingle these days.

I don't believe fearful is the right word at all. Cautious, perhaps. Calculating enough to know to wait for the right time more like it. He's definitely learned from the rash, even insane idea he was sputtering to Padme about killing the Chancellor and they could take over together. Because the Republic/Empire would be entirely happy to accept a known Jedi who murders their beloved Palpatine and then declares himself leader by right of stabbies.
>>
>>87636517
She was trusting in the people, not Dooku. She was hoping to undercut his base. He only has power because they gave it to him. If she can convince them to head towards peace instead she felt he would lose his grip on the CIS.

Now obviously a Sith Lord isn't going to take that lying down, and he was more than happy to murder anyone he wanted to keep things going as he saw fit. But at the same time it isn't in Padme's character to give up on people. She would feel obligated to try harder to save them because he is a Sith Lord.
>>
>>87636478
It's in the same system as Raxus in canon I think. I assume given Raxus Prime was a separatist world in legends. My headcanon is that the reason Raxus isn't so heavily industrialised like Coruscant despite being a pivotal world is because it's all outsourced to the junk planet nearby. Smart seppies.

Actually you know what he showed? The moment Anakin turned back to the Light Side he had the strength to overpower Sidious and kill him. It cost him his life doing so, but then that was the nature of the sacrifice that made him worthy of becoming a ghost.

During the tests by the Force Priestesses, co-opted by Sidious, sacrificing himself to destroy the Emperor was ultimately what made Yoda worthy to learn the secret.

Found the interview from celebration EU II

>>Filoni talked about one particularly fascinating story arc that was discussed for the series but never came to be. Dave Filoni was throwing around a story idea for an arc of episodes that would see Padme get in on the action, as he felt she had done a lot of diplomatic episodes for a while. The idea was that Padme was negotiating with the Separatists, and in order to prove herself she had to complete a series of physical challenges. She would take Ahsoka with her to compete in these games, but those she was negotiating with would insist she compete personally. The idea was that she would win the competition, prove herself, and sign a treaty to end the war – but just as she is signing, General Grievous is invading Coruscant to kidnap Palpatine and the events of Revenge of the Sith commence. Later on Filoni briefly mentioned that he had hoped the final episodes of the series could have actually overlapped with the events of Revenge of the Sith.

>>This would have been an incredible idea, as it would have added so much to Padme’s character who didn’t get a great deal to do in Revenge of the Sith unfortunately. The episodes didn’t come to pass unfortunately, there were concerns that there is a limit to how much physical activity Padme could do whilst pregnant. Ultimately George Lucas was involved in the final decision that this story arc wouldn’t come to pass.

And yet the circumstances were totally different, anon. That's the key. Killing the Chancellor as a known Jedi wasn't going to get him very far. Being Vader, known as the Emperor's right hand, already with huge power in the military since he is back in more or less Tarkin's position now that Tagge is dead again. Yes, they could have ruled as father and son far better than Jedi assassin who knocked up a Senator would have been welcomed with open arms right after Palpatine has this huge surge of support at the end of the war.

Let's put it this way. If Emperor Palpatine had died due to natural causes or happenstance Vader was already poised in a great position to step into power. Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker was NOT at the end of the Clone Wars.

He wasn't planning on killing Sidious that very moment. He was talking like a Sith in terms that eventually he would overthrown him. Anakin also isn't stupid. He wouldn't have just executed Palpatine. He most likely would have thought of a plan to remove Sidious, especially if Padme was by his side.

Anakin claimed the Jedi were evil after he was the one who stabbed a bunch of kids in the face, and this was after trying to choke to death his very pregnant wife who was his only reason to fall to the dark side in the first place.

He was completely drunk on the Dark Side. I have the sense that something like 7 out of 10 people who fall to the Dark Side get so full of themselves they end up getting killed pretty quickly. If you're very lucky you end up learning how to ride the madness like Sheev or Dooku. Vader learned how to do it, but Anakin was a complete mess.

I'd just like to remind everyone that the prequel movies are the weakest of the Star Wars movies, just look at the ratings!

The Phantom Menace : five point five
Attack of the Clones: six point two
Revenge of the Sith: seven
A New Hope: eight point five
Empire Strikes Back: eight point two
Return of the Jedi : seven point two
The Force Awakens: eight point one

>>
>>87639788
No, it's presented as being doubted by people who haven't seen it before (much like the audience).

>>
>>87639800
People were presented with the Empire's version of history, they believed what they were told, whatever that was.
>>
>>87639801

But why is there such a feeling of mystery in ANH. Lots of stuff isn't explained.

Like what did Owen and Beru tell Luke about his fathers death to give it such a mysterious feel.

Luke knows his father died, but no one told him how. They didn't even make something up, just told him not to worry about it.
>>
>>87639816

>>
>>87639838
Yes, but the knowledge of its existence is being kept alive by the populace of the galaxy, although some people refuse to buy into it.

Why even care though? Sure I agree the diversity is forced but not because it felt more present in the movie, but simply because Disney along with the actors themselves keep promoting it. Things would have felt better if they hadn't made diversity a selling point.

It's not the movie itself that felt off. As far as diversity goes, TFA shows just as much as both trilogies. It's the actors themselves who promoted it. Then again, I think it was those boycotts that started the whole diversity shit when we first saw Finn, so Boyega went ahead and defended himself.
>>
>>87643045
>those boycotts that started the whole diversity shit
I hate to sound like a tinfoil hat, but I don't believe this ever happened.

Any Star Wars fan has already experienced a saga with prominent black side characters in both trilogies. Why the fuck would there be people trying to boycott the movie over another one?

Plus, if you actually looked at the #boycottVII hashtag, there wasn't any racist comments at all. On the contrary, the entire hastag was just SJW's talking about this supposed boycott, and how "it's 2015!" and yadda yadda yadda.

Even on 4chan, on /pol/ and /tv/, there was no strong movement at all to boycott the movie.

So where the fuck are all these supposed racist Star Wars fans that tried to boycott what became the highest grossing movie in the US?

Nowhere, that's where. There was no movement to boycott the movie. Whether it was a meme that went too far, or a publicity stunt, is up to you.
>>
>>87643136
There was no boycott, but /poltv/ still threw an autistic shitfit about Finn.

>Any Star Wars fan
That's the thing though, it wasn't Star Wars fans because like you said, they would've known better. Like always, it was political ideologues hoping to score points in their retarded culture wars.

>>
>>87645096
You totally missed the real source of the outrage

Of course the empire is Nazis, they're supposed to be. But they're HUMAN supremacists, not "white supremacists". Star Wars has an inherently optimistic message about race in that all the different human "races" are irrelevant - they're all one species. Who cares about the difference between blacks and Asians when there's a Kaminoan and a Bothan next door. Attempting to retcon that to make a reference to real world politics feels shitty. And also conflicting with the canon because there are plenty of humans of different genders and ethnicities and even sexal orientations in the Empire. They're just all human.

I get where he's coming from but it's misguided. I think he figured that out and admitted it though, so it's all cool.

As far as anyone can gather officially, Jar Jar WAS supposed to be a mercenary who betrayed the Jedi in early drafts. We don't quite know how that concept evolved from there-for all we know he really was supposed to be a Sith. I think it's most likely that Jar Jar was supposed to be more important in AotC and RotS as a useful idiot who's used by Sheev.

And for all people talk about how great a twist that meme would have been, if that actually happened in AotC than the movie would be even more hated. Imagine Jar Jar and Yoda fighting. Now hold that image in your mind and really think about it.

Instead they're all shown as human just like in the good ol' OT and yes, as we discussed earlier in this very thread, also during those pesky Prequels. The one alien Republic officer is the one I think most would be happy to forget.

When Disney bought SW the nucanon Empire seems to have become more inclusive than it was before, including more women, different races

. I remember GL specifically saying the reason the empire is all men in ANH because of how women are symbolic of creating life whilst the empire is a symbol of death in the films or something like that.

But realistically you have to include some women after a while. But in the OT he specifically strived it seemed to make the Empire predominantly male.

Obviously the the Rebellion is being led by women like Mon Mothma & Leia to counter that. So this kind of stuff's been there a while.

No, but you have to wonder why they didn't just choose an uninhabited planet. It'd save them the trouble of having to go comb the place for aliens to kill off, which couldn't have been easy or efficient.
>>
>>87646229
I didn't really mind them too much. They weren't great and sadly, yes, not a lot of imagination went into them. They seem to look Star Wars by copying traits from existing aliens. We had a not-Ithorian, a not-Trando. Oh well. I don't think that is one of JJ's strong suits, honestly. There are some directors that do love getting creative. Luc Besson and Del Taco, certainly. Actually when this dropped it reminded me a lot of the Prequels:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BszXhUjJz00

Massive cityscapes, "droids", and even a bigger fish. No idea about the quality of it or how well it will stay true to the source material, but that's a whole other topic not for a Star Wars thread. I'm just talking about visuals.

I'm not even saying that TFA should have looked like this, but I did find TFA's design and the whole mundanity of its environments sorely lacking. I'm not saying you have to go full on CGI scenery porn the entire time, but a little now and then wouldn't hurt. We had an entire desert filled with wrecked Imperial war machines and it felt like it wasn't really explored. They flew through a Super Star Destroyer and it was a brief scene, dark, with barely anything to show for it. Hosnian Prime was so barely introduced people are STILL claiming it was Coruscant.

>>87646295
I think it was more a matter of them heading for a specific target and it would be odd seeing them get in dogfight after dogfight and then saying, "Okay, now let's just go where we were going in the first place." So the buzzdroids were added as a specific obstacle to be overcome while the Jedi were still flying to their objective.

That really doesn't excuse the lack of good dogfighting with ARC-170s. It was a waste. They all got killed off in an instant by cartoon robots and we focused on the tiny cartoon robots with drill thingys. We could have gotten a few surviving ARCs covering the Jedi as they make their attack run for Grievous' ship. You know, like the trench run.
>>
>>87639800
Because not everyone had seen a jedi or believed in them. Even in legends they had this, like when the Republic invaded one planet and the human separatist were talking about how Jedi stole/ate children and all this other stuff.

Add anti-Jedi separatist propaganda with the empires propaganda, you get doubt/hatred of the Force and Jedi.

Yeah, George was very much always balancing old and new, in terms of visuals. For every revisited planet or alien, we also got two more.

This philosophy lives on in Filoni, with TCW and Rebels.

JJ fuckface on the other hands just took to making rip-offs of the old planets and aliens.

Simultaneously not giving us anything new, nor giving us anything old (aside from the recycles plot)

It's impressive to be such a disservice to Star Wars really.

the story group takes favor with George's vision. You really think they'd say no to having Pantorans, Niktos, Iktotchi or Gands in TFA?
>>
>>87648643
Wrong, the LSG absolutely weren't having decisive choices over the aliens in TFA. That's not their job.

There's no way there would be any objections from them if JJ wanted some Twi'lek or Togrutan extras.

The LSG don't control EVERYTHING you know, each of the directors and writers have their own responsibilities and decision making too, and there is no evidence that anybody other than JJ made the choices to have no old aliens (aside from the Fanservice characters)
