If he absolutely has to be related, my guess is, after Moon's birth, he was adopted as a child by Eclipsa and her monster husband rather than being biologically related to either. Perhaps his parents were killed by Mewmans, maybe even by Solaria. Explains why he doesn't look like either figure in Eclipsa's tapestry and why he seems likely to be older than Moon in her tapestry.

If not that, Heinous could be Eclipsa's daughter, and Eclipsa's connection with Toffee is in some other way. Like she sympathized with him and gave him crucial information about the wand and against the rulers of Mewni. Or hell, he really did just kill her, maybe stabbing her in the back like he did Ludo.

There's a lot of ways this could go and it's all pretty interesting.

hey let's FLIP IT UP, instead of theorizing about Toffee's backstory, lets say which of the possible theories out there do you want to be true? Which backstory seems the most interesting for the show to explore?


Personally I hope Toffee and Moon were childhood friends. Not because of fucking weird shipper stuff, but because I think it's a tidy way to 1 explain his knowledge of the wand 2 explain his motive for wanting to destroy the wand. Plus I think that tapestry is especially tragic if Moon and Toffee were once close, and their friendship turning bad would create a dark parallel to Star and Marco's friendship.

I don't think they're childhood friends, I don't think they're related. I think Toffee is just really triggered by how the Mewnians treat the monsters and wants to wipe out Star's entire family and bloodline, or at least remove magic from the equation. Maybe he interacted with Eclipsa to pump her for information, maybe not. In any case he'd figured out enough that it's a good idea to try to attack the wand bearer when they're young and inexperienced - he tried to overpower Moon when she was, what, 17? 19?, but she proved to be too strong, so now he's targeting Star literally months after she's just gotten the wand and is too young and reckless still to understand what's going on and can't use the wand or her powers to their full potential.

What I do want to be true though is
-Heinous being Eclipsa's half-monster daughter
-Eclipsa's hubby being somehow distantly related to Tom, though it's very unlikely
-Eclipsa actually still being alive (I mean her sister Etheria is still around)

To be honest I also want to learn more about Tom

it starts slow and the comedy can be awkward at times but it really pics up once the character development start rolling, and development is not exclusive to the main cast, expect a lot of surprises from the villains too. I'd say Toffee being Moon's half-brother, a rightful heir to the throne, and Star's uncle is the most interesting if not cliche angle for the show to explore compared to half-monster Ms. Heinous, who is considerably less relevant to the plot at this point, or Toffee being a friend/comrade of Moon or Eclipsa because it either makes no sense or isn't as emotionally significant.

I was initially against the idea of Moon having fought Toffee in the past (before it was confirmed on the show) because I didn't like the idea of her seeming more badass than Star. Like, if they make Moon's past too interesting, it could sorta make you wonder why the show wasn't just about her instead.

Changed my mind when I saw the tapestries of her and the other queens, which were all cool and the type of backstory this show needed. I sorta want to see stories about all the past queens now.

So I guess now my hope is that Star gets a really badass moment equivalent to Moon's in this season finale or the end of the series. Maybe we'll get to see her completed tapestry too.

Technically, we don't know for sure that Solaria is her great-grandmother and Eclipsa her grandmother. The former is very likely. The later is probable, but I have some doubts.

I'm pretty sure that turning into a butterfly is a Butterfly thing, and not a monster thing. Firstly because it seems to be connected to the cheek marks, and (almost) all known butterflies have had those. Secondly because I doubt a child of Eclipsa and the monster would be considered a potential heir.

The cool parent/master dillema is only a thing if the main character is way to similar to its parent/master. Star is clearly different enough from her mom that her character arc is not same to her mom's.

We actually have one definite repeat, and two possible repeats:
The "drinking queen" in the tapestry room had diamonds, the same as Moon's.
Etheria has stars, which might be associated with an earlier queen given the statues and symbols in the tapestry room.
And one of the Butterfly children in Game of Flags had coins, which (if Star's book was accurate) she shares with the queen involved in the Monster Massacre.

We can't say for sure, all we can really go off of is that Mewberty is a well known event to affect females in Mewnie; in particular Star's family being the only examples we can directly confirm as of yet.

One possibility I've always liked is that idea that the Mewnie royal line has something that makes them more magical than the normal Mewmans, be it monster heritage in their ancestors or perhaps just exposure to the wand's magic.

It would be a neat explanation for the cheek marks within the royal family, those whose blood has been more affected by the magic exposure, which would be more likely to happen with direct descendants of the royal line.

I just find the logistics of Mewberty way too troubling for it to affect everyone in Mewnie. Having it only affect a small number of the population due to magical exposure just makes too much sense.

Back in the first season it looked like only queens had the marks and that they'd only correspond to the card suits theme, since we had only 3 definite examples aside from a Mewman in the first episode whose star cheeks could be brushed off as animators not realizing it was only for important characters. But finding out that it affects certain Butterfly females and that marks can indeed vary beyond that theme makes much more sense.

I think at this point it's also safe to say it's only women, since the fact that some males had cheek marks in early drawings for Game of Flags but not in the final episode is telling. The magic could make it so that if a Butterfly with the cheek marks gives birth to another who has them, that child would always be a daughter. Maybe especially so for the royal line.
