Starts in the Clone Wars to show how Krennic saves Galen Erso, his daughter Jyn and his wife. This then sets forth the "you are indebted to me, so why don't you help me out?" thing once the Empire is formed. Galen is a scientist working on energy use and Krennic saw the use of putting that research towards the Death Star laser, making it a reality.
Flash forward to Rogue One and we have Galen sending warnings of a big weapons test (the laser) and Jyn being assigned to try and stop it.

And she’s so lost in her own life that even when she hears the name Luke Skywalker, here, she doesn’t even believe it’s real. And changing their relationship and their attitudes and what they tell each other, I think helped enormously, in sort of bringing forward this sweetness and the kind of relatability that these characters needed."

See, I actually liked this aspect of Rey's story, since it gave her a hook and a reason to resist the call to adventure- but it goes away much too quickly. Halfway into the movie she meets an orange granny who just says "hey you already kind of know nobody's coming, right?" and Rey just breaks down and accepts that nobody's coming for her and that's kind of the end of it.
They make a token attempt to have Han be the new belonging she's looking for, since he offers her the job, but there isn't really much of a sense of Han and Rey connecting. It makes her later anger towards Kylo hollow because he wasn't much of a mentor and just casually gave her a job offer, so without any further connection between them it just feels like Rey is mad at Kylo because the script said so.

A death mark is indeed a tough thing to have hanging over your head since one day it might be hanging around your neck. Yet he still fights and suffers for his friends and the rebellion.
Sana, well, there are times when it is clear she isn't sure why she's hanging around either. She represents something different from Han. Han was only in it for himself at first. I think it's totally possible at that point. IIRC the plot synopsis for the tie-in says that Krennic brought the Erso family (Including Jyn as a child) under his protection to keep them safe from the Separatists at the end of the Clone Wars, so this can't be too long after that.
Also looking at his hat, what I thought was an imperial insignia might just be an earlier, republic design for the badge later officers have on there.

Sure they could be better. TFA could be better. The OT could be better in places, and in some instances were improved by the Special Editions such as the way they opened up and better populated Cloud City. And as far as Naboo being safe because it was his home, Sheeve wasn't known for his sentimentality. Him leaving it alone was uncharacteristic, and that spooked people.

Mostly the Outer Rim and ex-Seppy worlds. Naboo was firmly Republic so transitioned into the Empire.
I'd think the people weren't too happy but they were pretty peaceful all around. Hell, their main "tank" was an anti-vehicle cannon sticking out the trunk of Steve's speeder. I cannot imagine they enjoyed the armed stormtroopers, Star Destroyers, military bases.

He's not wrong. The prequels just aren't as good as the OT. The special effects are better, but the story, although more complicated and with the potential to be more dramatic, was executed terribly.

Alderaan was a public demonstration against a significant target. Jedha looks to be a once significant place representing old glories (and a corrupt, dependent system to the Empire) since completely forgotten and left to stragglers. Jedha is basically Mecca for those who still believe in the Force. There are Jedi statues there. The Death Star, whose primarily weapon is powered by a massive string of Khyber Crystals, is effectively a giant lightsaber. Jedha's destruction is symbolic both in that it's the introduction to the reign of technology over the Force, as well as a giant mockery and slap in the face to the Jedi.
