Also,
>the student from the shooting
Technically nobody got shot.
And it's not like she was shot in the wrist. She broke her wrist because of physics, though given past panels it would seem that her wrist is not only completely healed but able to bend the sturdy material used in the brace.

Now really, does anybody have the Sarah pinup?

No woman in a position of authority would ever say that.

All the powerful women I know are proud of their accomplishments and know they worked hard despite the male environment, not by pandering to it.

This is just "The glass ceiling is REAL ;__;" bullshit.
>>
>>87553163
>Technically nobody got shot.
Shots were fired. Lives were at real risk by virtue of bullets being shot out of a gun. That makes it a shooting.
>>
>>87553242

Not the way he used it. Someone might say oh His or her lament, but no one says "It's a lament" you would say it's lamentable
>>
>>87553394
It is a noun. Think of it in the sense of it being a piece of literature. Like "it's a poem" or "it's an obituary." She's referring to something you can read.

It's a lament of the awfulness of the system.

This is the relevant definition from Dictionary.com:
"6. a formal expression of sorrow or mourning, especially in verse or song; an elegy or dirge"
>>
>>87553094
On the one hand it seems like Willis is setting it up to where Leslie realizes that Robin isn't the right person for her, and we the audience are supposed to take that falling for someone just based on their looks isn't a good thing.

On the other hand there are a LOT of Leslie/Robin shippers who don't want to even think of these two not getting together, now matter how bad things seem about Robin.
>>
>>87553369
Fair enough.
Still, given how little attention seems to have been given to the incident in-universe, it doesn't come off as much of an event to me either.

Like, just think about how much attention goes towards school shootings when they DO happen here. The aftermath remains on the news for at least a week. We didn't see a lick of it in DoA, more than likely because it was completely blown over during the three-day timeskip that we had afterwards.
>>
>>87553594
It wasn't brought up because then the main point of the shooting would be brought up.

Becky's dad was coming to get her.

And if Willis wrote about everyone talking about that, it would just bring more questions for his readers, like "Why haven't the police talked to Becky?" "Why hasn't the school talked to Dina?" and stuff like that. It would be the obvious conclusion, Becky and Dina in fear of being broken up because the school and police need to ask them questions, and Becky's not actually supposed to be staying at the college for free.

Again though, if even one goddamn person would just talk to Leslie I bet this would get sorted out in no time, and probably beneficial for Becky. But Willis wants to drag that out.
>>
>>87553573
I'm pretty sure that Leslie already knows that Robin isn't right for her, but she still wants to fuck Robin regardless.
>>
>>87553311
Willis seems to think that conservative female politicians are submissive whores.

The first time Willis and Maggie got sexual, it was a spur of the moment thing and Maggie hadn't done much landscaping. Willis accepted this at face value and has run with it in his art ever since. Willis is the kind of nigga to just drop the answer in a punchline and then make it seem like it's a big deal.

Or he'll have Mary kick Carla between the legs to see what happens.

>>
>>87572315
Gerrymandering, probably.
>>
>>87572315

According to a tweet on Willy's Twitter, they blame the loss of a 60s "Voting Rights Act" a couple years ago for blocking minority votes in states with lots of racist guvments.
>>
>>87572095

Willy is currently huddled at his computer/television screen, frozen in horror, whisky slipping from his hand, as he realizes what America really wants.
>>
>>87572344
>Gerrymandering, probably.
That's not how gerrymandering works. That applies to redistricting for the purpose of electing House seats. The Pres is elected mostly on the basis of the retarded ass unit rule which says if even 51% of the voters vote one way that candidate gets all the House votes.
>>
>>87572356
It's not the 60's though. Social media would be all over that shit if black people were kept from voting at places.
>>
Shit, do we have to talk about the election here? I'm already trying to avoid it literally everywhere else on the internet.
>>
>>87572422
Why?
>>
>>87572315
Actually when you compare the demographics of Mississippi with the election results it lines up closely to the black/white population percentage.
>>
>>87572401

It's complicated I guess but the way it works supposedly is that, for a state to modify or add to its voting laws, the modification had to be approved by the guvment.

But under the same justification of "this act is now obsolete", it was lifted and primarily-Republican states began subtly modifying their voting laws in a way that discretely affected their democratic minority votership.

That's what they say, anyway.

The Voting Rights Act had a section that required states with districts that had a history of voter discrimination to get approval for all changes made in redistricting and election laws to ensure the changes weren't discriminatory. Shelby County v. Holder struck down part of the Act, specifically Section 4(b), as unconstitutional as it was applied unequally and based on information that had not been updated since 1975.

I bet Willis refuses to post the strip tonight, and instead posts some "how dare you vote Trump in " image instead.

Is this a reference to a real bill?
>>
>>87572716
Joyce's wrist brace has a crease in it, implying motion. That's not how braces are meant to work.

Also, there's something off-putting to me about this. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but I think it has to do with how Joyce seems to be directly blaming Robin for the bill. She treats Becky's problem as if it's directly Robin's fault.

It's not like Becky is diagnosed with some rare disease that forces her to announce her sexuality to everybody she mee- Oh, right.

>>87572783
I'd assume so. There have been several bills in the past with such implications against homosexuals.
>>
>>87572783

Yeah, it's a reference to things like HB2- but I'm pretty sure it's actually directly referencing SB100, which was a bill in Indiana that got shot down. It was a religious exemption bill that basically said "you can't discriminate against the gays... unless you feel like it." http://iga.in.gov/legislative/2016/bills/senate/100

That's the bill in question. The wording isn't too inflammatory, but everybody knew what it meant. Indiana's not a good state to be gay in. Or really anything in. Indiana's honestly pretty terrible. Fuck, we had an AIDS crisis last year, a full blown AIDS crisis in an era of antiretroviral drugs and condoms.
>>
>>87572783

It'd be interesting to dissect it.

Of course, IRL the politician would have a fairly slick answer ready that justified their position. But we see here that Robin has been blindsided by it and offers a feeble defense for the sake of getting the point across, rather than a well-rehearsed reply that's stable enough to provoke argument.

But we've known for years upon years that such things are not within Willy's ability.
>>
>>87572846
Does Willis remember that Robin is a Congressional Representative and not a state politician? Or is the DoA universe somehow more bigoted than the real world?
>>
>>87572878

The loss of my freedom to discriminate against people that engage in legal behaviors I personally find disgusting or immoral is less than the loss of freedom you'd experience if I and a large percentage of the population were to decide that people who liked your favorite brand of ice cream shouldn't be allowed to work in our businesses or live in the buildings we own. Because Willis is terrible.

Because I have gay friends and trans friends that I admire and respect. Some of the best and smartest people I've ever known. And I want my gay friends to have better representation in webcomics than an obnoxious carrot-top who has the maturity of a 12-year-old, and I want my trans friends to have better representation than a transgirl who only interacts with others if she's fucking up their lives.

Because Willis's idea of supporting african-americans is a convoluted plot about intraracism and parental favoritism that even most black people wouldn't touch, rather than actual shit that we have to deal with in colleges and in the midwest. People claim that he's afraid of black people, and honestly, I believe them.

Because Willis's refusal to take any sort of criticism or perform any level of introspection is honestly disturbing to someone who does a fair share of creative work. He refuses to get into the minds of most of his characters, instead copying and pasting his own mental templates onto them, and he refuses to listen to a number of people who are closer to his own subject matter than he is, and he's marketing his approach to a bunch of impressionable youth. I'm pretty sure I've put more thought into Mary's character in the 3 hours I spent writing that Mary/Joyce fanfic up there than Willis has in the last 6 years.
>>
>>87584105
Because Willis can't stop treating his audience like children. The kitten thing when he dealt with Becky's mom's suicide attempt. His refusal to make Mary into an intimidating villain. His tendency to turn villains into cardboard cut-outs to be punched and belittled. I understand the need for safe spaces and I understand that people can react badly to some subject matter, but if you're undercutting your own work to make it safe, then what's the point?

In short, Willis claims to be writing in support of the social justice movement, but he doesn't put in the necessary work to be a good ally, and he doesn't put in the necessary work to be a good writer either, so he's just using the social justice movement to cover up his own flaws as a creator and a human being. And quite frankly, fuck that shit.

Duterte's only distinction is how open he is about what he's doing. He's not doing anything special when you compare him to parts of Africa, South America, or Asia. Hell, "let's just murder people," is a pretty common government tactic in general.

i don't think you understand: you're the owner of the place, and you're being obligated to hire/keep someone by the government.

>Is it really that unreasonable sounding that people shouldn't have to live in fear of being fired for doing things that are perfectly legal
anon, you can be fired for ANY other reason regardless of your performance; i could discover that you killed someone in the past and fire your ass for that; again: i don't even need to give a reason to fire you. It's subjective. So why put sugar on the issue when it's about sexuality?

Eh, he should calm his tits and get over it.

I should also point out:

there are two ways to fire someone where i live; i believe everywhere else too. With and without just cause. Both are legal, but if you fire someone without just cause you must pay a small quantity of money as reparation, and the guy also gets some additional money from the government.

I'm not defending homosexuality is a just cause to have someone fired.

>You don't like them,
You don't have to. They're your employee, not your friend. If they're actively antagonizing you or others in the workplace that's one thing, but firing someone because you just don't like them and you don't know how to be professional? That's bullshit.

>wants to hire someone else (like a friend, for example)
Unless that someone can do the job better, that's basically cronyism. There are plenty of ways you can help your friends that don't involve hurting anyone.

>(he killed your daughter, for example)
If he's done his time, then it's not your place to punish him further. People change.
If he hasn't been convicted of it, then it's neither your place to determine his guilt, nor is it your place to decide his punishment. If you're worried he's going to hurt more people, making him lose his job isn't going to stop him.

>so you're not saying it's legal/ilegal, but moral/imoral?
Immoral and illogical. You're hurting yourself (a less-qualified applicant will make you less money) and hurting others (any stockholders you might have, the guy you're firing, society at large as people have to plan their lives around the possibility of being fired for things that aren't at all work-related).

working with someone you don't like may affect your work, and even theirs. But worst-- you don't trust them. In your mind, homosexuality is nothing. In his mind, that's a major flaw in character. I should also point out again: you own the place, you shouldn't have to care about what anyone else thinks.

>Unless that someone can do the job better, that's basically cronyism
you're not obligated to make the best job possible; if you want to give half of the money for charity, are you going to argue there is something wrong with that as well? nothing wrong with helping a friend.

>If he's done his time, then it's not your place to punish him further
So you're wrong to hate someone that killed your daughter?

>Immoral and illogical
but not illegal; people make illogical and immoral decisions all the time, it's not our place to judge it. A mother saving his son instead of 10 other people could be seen as immoral and illogical, but we don't judge.

Realistically Russia's the only country with nukes that's liable to use them since their military consists of a relative minority of new and updated equipment covering for increasingly obsolete Soviet vintage tech coupled with an incredibly aggressive posture. Where i live you can fire people for whatever reason you want already. I just find it weird when you say "not allowed" as in "illegal" to state such reason. Haha no, nope! You are SERIOUSLY overestimating how much Willis cares about his readers actually getting something out of his comic, other than "Christianity is the devil" and "Celibacy: not even once". There won't be a moral. There won't be a purpose. There won't even be a conclusion, it will go on forever. It exists purely as a superfluous side-story, and nothing more.

Dude, it's WEBCOMICS. Together with fanfiction, it's among the lowest forms of entertainment due to its extremely low production values and the medium's relationship with emotionally unstable authors.

Nice background action from Willis. He needs to do that more often. It adds visual depth to the normally two-dimensional plane he sticks with.

As for the comic, I still don't see why Joyce is taking out her frustrations on Robin as if she had a personal input in the bill. As we've discussed before, Willis is misinterpreting the role of a House Representative in state politics; Robin wouldn't have ever voted on the bill in question. Secondly, has this bill ever been mentioned before in DoA? Like, was Joyce ever introduced to the bill, then learned of the ramifications it would have had on Becky's freedoms?

Someone like Robin (what is she again?) would not walk into a classroom and get caught off guard by such questions. They would have rehearsed a clearcut and debatable answer to defend themselves, even if it was complete bullshit.

I'm not sure what exactly this (more than likely fictitious) bill entails, but there'd be an argument regardless. You know what this is? A strawman

Ynow, now I'm gonna be wondering for the next few months what exactly he improvised into the buffer to deal with the fact that miss Clinton isn't going to be the one behind the desk.

>>

>Someone like Robin (what is she again?) would not walk into a classroom and get caught off guard by such questions. They would have rehearsed a clearcut and debatable answer to defend themselves, even if it was complete bullshit.

From an in-story standpoint; Robin (regardless of which universe she appears in) has never taken her congressional duties all that seriously. She didn't in Shortpacked, and it's not surprising that she's half-assing it here either.

From a broader narrative standpoint, you're completely right.

What's sad is to Willis this is an improvement.

To Willis, Joyce becoming a bitter, sardonic cunt is positive character development.

So now she realizes she's a terrible person?
>>
>>87599742
Pretty much. She went to the midnight rally and tried to pretend she wasn't there, because her views were the complete opposite of politician lady's.

Politics lady's younger sister is a terrible person (the girl with the black hair and glasses in the background) and was trying to hook lesbian teacher and politics lady up so politics lady would look bad for dating a woman (since she runs on "family values").

Lesbian teacher went along with this, because boobies.

Lucy, Jacob, Sierra, Riley (Roz/Robin's 12-year-old sister), and Dina's parents are pretty inoffensive. But that's mostly because they've not been in enough strips to matter or be anything other than bland stand-ins for whatever Willis wants them to be.

Is there any single minority more vocal than LGBT? Also, is there any single element of their identity that isn't 100% decided by the fact that they like to chew on the same kind of genitals as their own?

Seriously... I know I'm a *gasp* straight cis white male, but I go entire hours of my life without actively thinking of my junk and who I'd like to put it in. I think about books... video games... driving a car around in the afternoon for fun... having a drink at night or making a tasty dish for dinner...

But, for gays, is it literally a mathematical equation in their identity where every single thing they have to do has to be divided by "X" where "X" equals the dong (real or strap-on) they wish was up their butt? Because, if so, that's an awful way to go through life.
>>
>>87593019
People who commit suicide over an election in a country where you can still fight democraticly against nearly everything the elected leader tries to push don't have any perspective.

Sure, it's sad, but it's a really cowardly thing to do that only serves to harm the people around them and takes away another voice that could help their demographic.

Not to mention that people bringing this up reek of guilt tripping and using suicidal people to push their agenda. "Look at what you made them do by voting for Trump/third party!" Fuck off with that bullshit, seriously.

Also, anecdotal evidence is worthless anyway.

There are actually a ton of trans and gay people that are fairly pleasant people to be around.

Mostly because they only bring that stuff up when it is natural or appropriate to do so. And they are actual people with a sense of humor and hobbies.

The LGBT community has the problem that they are basically run by SJW with a gigantic chip on their shoulders.

It must really suck for them when they are represented in society by these assholes.

Where's the joke?

Is the joke that Robin is completely oblivious to Leslie's feelings? Is it that Leslie is having an epiphany about creating an idealized image of a person only for it to be torn down in front of her own eyes? Is it that Dorothy is a Jew?

Also,
>alt-right trolls on Twitter
ECH.

Also, this is starting to feel like Willis scripted this for television or something. I think it's the cut back to Robin at the end. Maybe it's just me. I'm starting to miss Carla.

>>
>>87617556
I once trolled someone on tumblr about this; saying I was a cisbi white male of Irish-French descent, so I could claim oppressed status due to sexuality, having come from a line of family members persecuted in the early 20th century, and another family line of people routinely mocked as weak and constantly surrendering.

Then pointed out that I could very easily blend into the cishet white male class; enjoying privilege while simultaneously being exempt from accusations thereof.
>>
>>87617594
Okay so the whole point of these last few strips have been for Willis to nail it home that Leslie and Robin are NOT getting together in this universe. Roz set this whole thing up as a way of trying to ruin her sisters campaign and to show her teacher, Leslie, that she's a bit of a hypocrite.

It's also an easy way for Willis to show that Robin's antics in a more grounded(somewhat grounded? It's more grounded than Shortpacked!) series leads to some troubling conclusions. That she acts on impulse and is more concerned with appealing to the larger demographic than those who might actually get hurt in the crossfires.

That said, you've STILL got people in the comments section who want these two together, because Lesbians.

I'm sure there are easier ways to nail the point down, perhaps straight up not having Leslie be interested in Robin at all. "Sure, I'm a lesbian, and sure, I'd love to watch her eat me out, but it doesn't necessarily mean I'm actually attracted to her. I just want her to sit on my face."
Everything Willis has done, or at least everything since Leslie sneaked into the midnight rally, is almost the opposite of what Willis intends: He's been actively setting up Leslie and Robin to have a meet-cute.
I still don't see how Roz thinks what she's been doing will ruin her sister's campaign, though. The sex tape wasn't Robin's problem; it may have been an odd coincidence to some, but Robin is not directly responsible for Roz. And I don't even know what Roz's plan now is supposed to be.

I'm with you on the idea that Robin's impulsive actions do have consequences, though. But Willis seems to just be using Robin as a strawman to which he hurls accusations that, as we've discussed before in this thread, do not actually work that way in reality.

And of course people want lesbians to bang. Because, as you say, lesbians.

They don't see it as such.

Cerberus has blatantly defended the idea of white racism because they're not "an oppressed minority". By their logic you *can't* be racist against whites.

It all goes back to Rebels and Empires. The "oppressed minorities" are the Rebels, the protagonists, the heroes, the focus of the universe. The Whites are nothing more than mooks, practically indistinguishable, their ills and ailments just and inconsequential. They're not people.

Roy Cohn she is not.
