Marvel movies are essentially just reskins of the exact same movie.

By comparison, it'd be like if every movie after ANH was just an ANH rip off. Yes, I know, TFA. But 5/6 sequels aint bad.

Critics are clueless, and I am convinced that a LOT of the marvel reviews were paid off, because I don't think any of the mcu (I've seen most of it) deserves such critical praise.

The fact that, as you say, they average higher scores than Star Wars, shows how much of a joke rotten tomatoes is.

RotJ copied the Death Star plot yes, the rest of the movie was original.

The Prequels all had original stories though. Poetry, contrary to what JJ thinks =/= copying the story.

Only TFA completely copied the entire plot beat-for-beat from ANH, comparable to marvels formulaic storytelling.

Well, they DO consider themselves a military people so a high degree of conformity is to be expected. It's why Sabine customizing her gear is so atypical, and at the same time the very reason she acts that way. She was rebelling before the joining any rebellion, even Hera's.

So why does the animation in Rebels look worse than TCW, yet they seem to have a bigger budget for voice actors (like being able to get Frank Oz and James Earl Jones instead of Tom Kane and Chad Vader)?

Seriously good stuff, and so much more mature than Mike Stoklasa could ever be.
>>
>>87515137
Disney only cares about producing more movies at a Marvel squale.
Rebels was something more on the sidelines to let the staff from TCW employed
>>
>>87515137
Because voice actor budget and animation budget are different things. Disney wants to give the bare minimum needed to make the show be presentable on television to animation, instead of pumping in extra money to make it look even nicer than the baseline like TCW got from George.
>>
>>87514965
The protagonist kills an entire village of sand people, children, unarmed enemies after complaining about that twice in the same movie, and gets set on fire after having his limbs sliced off

>>
>>87515137
The animation in Rebels is fine, its the artstyle/textures that are cheaper. It's partly due to Disney not funding Lucasfilm animation as much as Lucas did, so they settled on an artstyle based on McQuarrie's concept art.

It's a cheaper stylization, and thus they can easily afford to bring in more Voice Actors.

There's all kinds of implications one could make. Maybe implications is the wrong word. Possibility?

Vanity is one, sure. We could go in other psychological directions, though. Something in Jango's past that makes him feel he never became the man he wanted to be, maybe he had a fucked up childhood, and this is his way of making up for that. A chance at a do-over for himself, raised properly by someone who cares about him: himself.
>>

>>
>>87516988
Maybe if we knew something about her, she wouldn't be.
>>
>>87516774
He can feel he's a good warrior and still be unhappy with his life or wish he had something else. Not everyone gets pushed into that kind of life because they like it. Sometimes it's a lot of anger. Even self-loathing that you take out on people and take comfort in at least getting paid.

Or not. Really there's not enough info on Jango in canon to make this determination. I think the most we have of him beyond a generic villain is Hondo saying he was honorable. Frankly he never seemed that way given he murdered his own allies (even if to protect himself). Hondo is such a wild card with the truth, though. He seemed sincere at least. Might be some wiggle room about if he would lie in order to protect Boba since the boy was already caught by the Jedi and it would only get worse for him.

If its just a comedic persona to express your own opinions, then yeah it isnt a relevant distinction re: that conversation
>>
>>87517650
I disagree.

People have written and portrayed characters that are similar to themselves, yet the characters and the person portraying the character are not the same person.

Plinkett is a made up character portrayed by Mike. They share similarities, but Mike is a real person, Plinkett is fictional.
>>
>>87515137
Probably because profit is more of a priority for Rebels than it was for TCW.
I see no reason to get big names back in just to do voices other than to attract the crowd.
>>
>>87517718
In the case of big names already attached to the franchise, it at least lets the character sound more authentic. Having Frank Oz spares us from Tom Kane's constipated Yoda, for example.
>>
>>87517791
I'm sure they would've gotten someone else that can do OT Yoda voice anyway.
I don't mind them getting back original voices back either but I'm sure that used up a lot of the budget.
>>
What are the major differences between Traviss's Mandalorians and the Mandalorians in the Tales of the Jedi/KotOR comics and games?
>>
>>87517791
Frank did Lego Star Wars but not TCW
>>
>>87517846
>I'm sure that used up a lot of the budget.
It probably did take a bite out of it, which is probably why Yoda and Vader rarely appear, but I don't think you can really make the case that getting soundalikes instead of the real guys would've led to a significant improvement in models/animation/lighting/etc.
>>
>>87517702
You think irl mike likes the prequels?
>>
>>87513488
Or maybe some people have different opinions than you and happen to dislike a movie series with kind of bad dialogue (Lucas even admits this) and weird acting due to Lucas doing only 1 cut in most scenes. The story is pretty good. The lore is good. The designs are good. The technology is good. But strictly as movies where you're supposed to value writing and acting they're arguably bad. Keep in mind I'm not saying that it's required for you to have this opinion because this belief is 100% fact. I know of I didn't say that you would pull that shit because you're one of those guys who cannot fathom people disliking something you like. I understand why some people would like them, I just personally don't.

Fucking hell when did these threads get so bad that you have to put a disclaimer after every opinion otherwise you will start a huge argument?
>>
>>87517883
>Frank did Lego Star Wars but not TCW
If you're talking about the games, all the voice there is just grunts and yells. What the LGSW games used to do was just use existing voice clips from the movies to give the characters grunts and such, and if the actor is available get them in, hence why you see a significant part of the movie cast being credited despite not having done anything. I think the Clone Wars game was the first time they'd just gotten the whole cast in to record completely new sounds, since they're all voice actors who work cheap anyway.
>>
>>87517950
>Fucking hell when did these threads get so bad that you have to put a disclaimer after every opinion otherwise you will start a huge argument?

>People have written and portrayed characters that are similar to themselves, yet the characters and the person portraying the character are not the same person.

I do not think Mike likes the prequels, but I also don't believe that he was old enough to be on the titanic, that he has killed two of his ex-wives, and that he has dead bodies in his basement.

You can't just focus on the aspects of the Plinkett character that are similar to Mike, and completely ignore all the differences.
>>
>>87518085
Case in point, this guy. I specified the difference between actual criticism and blatant shitposting, and the latter tend to immediately play the "having different opinions doesn't make it shitposter, wow this is really a /co/mblr hugbox" card the moment someone calls them on their shitposting.
>>
>>87518091
I think there's a difference between the opinions expressed by a character that make up the bulk of the video and backstory tidbits thrown in for laughs.

Not sure what kind of nuanced subcategory you're trying to claim you're part of
>>
>>87518235
>Blame it on the baiters from /tv/ who come here purely to start shit and have made it hard to distinguish genuine criticism from shitposting for (you)'s.
Yeah, theres two camps in your mind. Genuine posters and tv shitposters, like i said
>>87518262
Except that genuine criticism is misread for shitposting constantly. If the shitpost spoting squad wasnt constantly on alert, responding to b8 and sincerity alike with further b8, things would be fine
>>
>>87518130
You do understand that the obscene internal history is the reason why the Plinkett character is so obsessed with the PT, right.

He's fucking losing touch with reality. That's why Mike mixes in the autistic nitpicking with the legit criticism (inB4 there is nothing in the PT to criticise).

The character of Plinkett is insane.

It doesn't matter, though. You're still confusing his backstory with the actual purpose of the video.

Its just an excuse for him to be a total nerd making over hour long star trek/wars reviews and give people a reason to watch even if they know what hes going to say

>>
>>87518135

To be fair, Saxon must be in his fifties at this point. His best days are clearly behind him.
>>
>>87518319
Isn't this like saying that the guys behind MST3K don't actually want to make fun of movies, and it's just their characters doing it because they need a way to stay sane as they're forced to watch bad movies?

I mean, that's the context of the show, but it's still the actual writers and actors sitting down and coming up with jokes about the movie. The framework is just an excuse for the actual purpose of the show, to make fun of bad movies.
>>
>>87518368
STEPHEN COLBERT.

When he is on TV he says things that he agrees with in real life, but the way he goes around portraying himself ON TV is of a character. Do you think that Stephen Colbert asks the way he does on TV in real life. Fuck no, and he doesn't even bother to change his characters name.
>>
>>87518452
Yeah, but the character of Colbert only espouses conservative opinions in a way that mocks them- no part of the character is genuine or meant to be honestly listened to. There's a distinct difference between him and Plinkett.
>>
>>87518452
And? If someone criticized him would you say "oh hes actually not exactly the same when not on tv"?
>>
>>87518452
The Stephen Colbert character is a blatant parody, though, and he's not trying to get anyone to seriously listen to him
>>
>>87518492
Yes, but his mocking of conservative principles is still something that the real Colbert agrees with, but the way he does it with his character is different than how he does it in real life.
>>
>>87518135
This guy and I have posted that Seventh Sister is best waifu on one of their threads.
>>
>>87518562
That's the difference though- the CHARACTER isn't mocking them, the character is agreeing with them- the actual Colbert is just portraying the character as a blowhard idiot.
>>
>>87518531
If I get cast in a movie as a character that I share characteristics with, it still doesn't make it any less of a fictional character.
>>
>>87518597
You really don't understand satire, do you?
>>
>>87518600
No fucking shit. That also has zero relevance to this thread
>>
>>87518600
No, but when you use that character to make a two hour video criticizing a movie, there's going to be a question of how much of that criticism is real.
>>
>>87518597
Anon, the character is a satire of conservative talking heads. It is 100% mocking.
>>
>>87518651
Not really. Is it not a given that mike really believes in all his criticism?
>>
>>87518629
>>87518657
Sigh. Re-read it. The character is a mockery, but the character himself isn't doing the actual mocking- the character believes everything he says. The actor is the one doing the mocking THROUGH the character.

>The episodes didnt have the trademark flat pacing/direction/acting
Hardly. Quality still varied during TCWs. Not all stories were great. Meebur Gascon's arc stands out, for instance. Some people hate Katie Lucas' episodes.

You're acting like somehow Lucas was divorced enough from the proceedings that this is why TCWs worked, when in actuality they were quite varied anyway and he was still working on the good, the bad, and the ugly.

So George wasn't directing? We've known he often served best as an idea guy with a competent team backing him up. Hell, he tried to get other people to direct the Prequels and they wouldn't.

Probably not after episode 9, but I imagine the 11th episode will air on December 10- that's the latest we can go before Rogue One, and that's about when season 2 took its midseason break.

If that holds, that means that this week will be the only break we get between now and the midseason finale, since that puts the next two known episodes at Nov 19 and 26, and the last two episodes speculatively at Dec 3 and 10.

This. George is an incompetent writer and director. The real man behind TCW's success is Filoni.
>>
>>87522524
Rebels main problem is its budget and its timeframe, Disney doesn't want to commit too much money to the show, and they show has only a 19 year period to work with in which nothing big can really happen aside from the rebellion forming
>>
>>87522683
But it starts only five years before ANH and it's apparently to go past that.
>>
>>87522683
There is story structure limitations too. Their episodes are far more self-contained. For instance in the Utapau Arc you can have Obi-Wan and Anakin have a serious discussion about Ahsoka and whether Anakin can ever disappoint Obi-Wan. You can do that when the story is spread over multiple episodes but it is harder to do so when the entire adventure is compressed into thirty minutes. This means regardless of their plot they need to find one that can justify having a large chunk just for Ezra and Sabine having a "totes serious" discussion about their non-existent relationship like anons were talking about earlier.
>>
>>87522582
They have most of the same writers and creative talent working on the show. It may limit how good they can make their textures, how many new assets the can justify creating, etc, but unless the writers are refusing to do their best work unless they get higher pay then no, that shouldn't have mattered.

Those weird statues are super old but have human faces on them, Jar Jar's banishment (real reason), everything prior to the movies. AotC was a massive step down in the arts department, but I think it is intentional; the death of Qui-Gon (and Maul) symbolizes the change of an era.

Considering over half the shots of it in the movie were CGI, the physical prop meant nothing.

Every flying shot, the entire shot of it sitting under the tarp before Rey flies it, Han crashing it on Starkiller Base, etc. That's more we see of it compared to the interior shots, the minute long shot of it landed on Takodana.
>>
>>87525567

>>87525623

Flying shots don't matter because they're so fast and blurred that it's hard to tell.

No. I am not saying there's no difference. I am saying that they're two practices. And movie makers should be able to utilize both however they want.

>>
>>87525639
You're backing my point.
If you say that you can't tell the difference, then the difference would have mattered.

Inherently, there is nothing wrong with CGI. It happens all the time, but it's often invisible.
The problem is using CGI in places that it is obvious.

CGI should never be obvious unless absolutely necessary.
If you have a character (like the waitress droid that originally spawned this discussion) that could be real but isn't, it's noticeable and annoying

There's nothing wrong with invisible CGI.
>>
I think the Ewoks mark a divide in who Lucas was aiming STAR WARS at

For 4 and 5 Lucas was making movies for the inner child. That place where you imagination runs rampant.

For 6 and after he started making them for ACTUAL CHILDREN.

>>
>>87525658
>It was real when it mattered.
It never mattered. It would have the same impact on the movie if it was a full shitty model the entire time like in ANH or full CG if it was in the PT. It fills the scene, acts as a setting and does what it needs to do. That's it.

It's when something could have been real but isn't, then I have a problem.

Practical SFX have a subtle but profound effect on how a movie feels. CGI should try very hard to imitate it. If they can't and practical effects are possible, then there's something important lost

Totally agreed.

The Ewoks were a sign of what the Prequels would become.

RotJ isn't bad.
Some of the greatest OT moments are from that movie (i.e. Luke/Vader duel).
But the Ewoks were a cancer that eventually killed the host
>>
>>87525711
wat

But invisible CGI is a thing now because we've come that far, that we can make CGI objects that look real.
All ships in TFA were animated, the entirety of Starkiller base was animated, Maz' castle was animated and so on.

Had they made Dexters' waitress droid today, it would look just as real as anything else in TFA.
I mean, they even CG'd Kylo Ren's helmet in a few shots.

Kylo's CGI helmet is good.
Because you can't tell.

Maz' castle or some or some of Starkiller Base is not as good because of how transparent it was.

ANH had the sense to use real ruins for Yavin.
And it made a difference even though some of it (e.g. the guy on the improbably long scout tower) was SFX.

Having real things makes an emotional difference. I can't believe this is controversial here.

I don't blame them for innovating.
I'm thankful in that regard.

But I can still criticize how flagrant CGI impacted the feel of the movies.

On a side note, the LotR movies used CGI in a primarily real background and set.
The PT used CGI in addition to a CGI background.
CGI on CGI looks bad.

Nothing of movies are real.
Even with 100% "real" things.

It's about how you feel about them that matters.
I know autists have difficulty with emotions.

Movies are purely emotional events.
It's all about how you feel about the picture because none of it is real.
If you're purely rational, all you see is a 2D flickering image.
Emotions give depth.

This might be a thing. Lucas ushered in an era of making movies for the sole purpose of playing off of nostalgia ( which explains the heavy influx of remakes and reboots recently) and he also proved that you don't really need quality acting or even good camera work to sell a movie. All you need are flashy special effects. This explains all of the Marvel movies.

>And "pacing" is a word people use without knowing what it means.
How unfortunate for you that I am not one of those people.

Take the third act of TPM, cutting between four simultaneous action sequences. The tonal shifts between the three pronged duel with Maul to the partly comedic battle between the Gungans and the Battle Droids can be whiplash inducing. In an instant, you go from lamenting the death of Qui-Gon to slapstick with Jar-Jar Binks.

AoTC is actually relatively well paced despite being easily the worst entry in the entire series so far, but perhaps the biggest offender in the entire saga was RoTS in handling arguably the most important plot point in the trilogy, Anakin's fall to the Dark Side. In the space of about ten minutes of screen time, Anakin goes from being furious at Palpatine's admission, to screaming at Mace not to betray the principals of the Jedi to raiding the temple and slaughtering younglings. It's simply baffling.

Don't need to, I know there are some places like that in Star Wars as we've seen them here and there but the simple fact is that an institution like the Empire would have them EVERYWHERE especially in their MILITARY BASES AND SPACE STATION/SUPER WEAPONS but they...don't 99% of the time.

This is because of where Star Wars started in 1979, the concept of big brother wasn't really out there yet so in order to stay true to it you can't have cameras everywhere and the heroes need to be able to walk into the MEGA DEATH WEAPON OF REALITY DESTROYING OMNIUM VERTOSSI OBLITERATI DIMENSION CROSSING REALIZATION THEIR EXISTENCE IS FICTION LUCASIAN REWRITIN BOOM BLASTER because a guard turns his head.

As Yoda might say everybody had their part to play in Luke's destiny, no matter how small.

Of course he'd say it a lot weirder...

Actually, that wasn't me. Just was making a snide comment to the one he was responding to.

Did you see the SE's in the theater?

>My argument is that before ROTJ, there was no pandering to kids. In ROTJ and after there is.

You stated "4 and 5" no where until you got proven wrong

I don't even know what is happening in here anymore? Everyone is fighting.

I wish.
My parents bought them and I watched them until the VCR eroded the tape.

I remember actually taking apart my old VCR when the tape stopped working right.
There was a piece of straw in it. Can you believe that? I have no idea how that happened.
Anyways, I know I"m a young faggot here.

But I love those old movies.

Egging things on is kind of a bad idea.

Your original post stated the prequels were for children. I pointed to evidence of the contrary

You then dismissed it and started shifting goalposts

I stated that, starting with ROTJ, George Lucas starting putting in stuff for little kids.

That was the entire basis of my post.
>>
>>87528943
And I merely pointed out that there was plenty of things that weren't for children in those movies

I like to pretend that any time Sio Bibble tries to call someone, but the call gets dropped, he just assumes the planet is about to be invaded.

He really should switch to Verizon

>They do nothing childish.

They're small funny creatures with high-pitched voices with the silly nonsense catchphrase of OOTINI
