Is this just old people humor? What conditions must exist for Heathcliff to be successful for so long? I can understand other comics that aren't quite as funny by today's standards. Garfield's jokes are recycled to oblivion and based on very consistent characterization but I can see why it's managed to be culturally relevant. Stuff like Family Circus can get a chuckle out of parents with small children or at least be cute.

Heathcliff, though, I can't understand. It's presented like it's being really clever like The Far Side and that it's relying on the reader to put two and two together. But there is no two and two, it's just some picture with a vaguely related caption that, when put together, has no payoff. There's no punchline and I can't tell if it's because I'm missing something or because that sick fuck of an author gets off an the idea that his readers are wasting so much time trying to find a point in all of this.

It makes me feel mortal and small, a Lovecraftian horror as I realize that none of this has meaning and that Heathcliff, and indeed the universe, do not care about my thoughts, beliefs, or existence. We can't even ascribe meaning to this chaos as it's hand crafted to avoid human comprehension.

I can look at a Picasso, a numbered splattering of paint, and be free from the artist's intent, free to see what I want to see in that numbered splattering of colors on a canvas. But Heathcliff? No, it wants to make just enough sense that I become the slave of the author, a form of malignant mind control that exists purely to attack my sanity. The universe isn't so cruel as to leave meaningless printed words where we might stumble upon them; Peter Gallagher is.

Switch the text of most Heathcliff frames and not much is lost.
