What happened was Pratt went out and bought the relaunch (IIRC it came out Feb 2013, the same month he was cast) and brought it to Gunn for approval. Gunn advised him and the other actors not to read any comics, but said if they insisted they should read Abnett and Lanning as that's what the movie would be closest to.
