Marinette is shy and lazy; except when she is not. Then she isn't. That may sound stupidly redundant, but there is definitely a consistency problem with Marinette. She's righteous, but that's just saying she's the good guy (her role in the show). She's a bit obsessive. Alright, that I will give you.

Interestingly, Marinette passes the Plinkett test a lot better in the Origins episodes than she does in the rest of Season 1. Make of that what you will.

Marinette is the good guy in and out of costume. The only difference is that in costume the bad guys and problems tend to be a lot more fantastic, whereas out of costume they tend to be more mundane (Chloe being a bitch who abuses her privilege and connections for the most part). But whether it is action or slice of life, Marinette is the good guy either way.

Also, I think you're seeing character development where there isn't any. Marinette in Volpina doesn't seem all that different from the rest of Season 1, bar the Origins episodes. She's just written inconsistently.

If she's "competent and confident" but also "clumsy and insecure" and her one personality "bleeds into" her other personality, then we've got a consistency problem brought about by giving one character two separate characterizations. This isn't "Marinette is many, she contains multitudes." This is "Marinette and Ladybug are two separate characters for all intents and purposes.

Sometimes they make Marinette act like Ladybug to get the plot moving while portraying Marinette in a flattering light (Darkblade) and sometimes they make Ladybug act like Marinette for a quick but harmless laugh at her expense (the scene with Gabriel and Ladybug looking at the "Do it for Him" collage of Adrien photos, or the scene with Adrien in his shower in Simon Says).

Not really. Chat Noir is Adrien plus anonymity. His personality is still present, he's just not as restrained by societal and parental restraints that otherwise dominate his existence. Most of what Adrien does, he does because his Dad makes him. What little we see of Adrien proper (when he's alone in his room with only Plagg) is a sarcastic, lovelorn goofball whose heart is in the right place but whose head is in the clouds. The only thing that changes is that he starts using a lot of puns and theatrical flourishes when in costume. Whenever he starts to have prolonged social interactions with his peers, you can see Chat Noir start to creep out. It just doesn't happen that much.

Basically, Chat Noir is a less polite and "manicured" Adrien. Same character, different levels of restraint. Ladybug and Marinette seem to be polar opposites. Unless Ladybug gets pissed. Then she starts to act like Marinette. Until her rant is over, then back to being a separate character. It doesn't help that out of costume Marinette doesn't have much going for her beyond humorously exaggerated reactions to things. And a desire to be a fashion designer. Which was only explored once.

So, for the tl;dr crowd

Marinette- emotional, self-doubting, anxiety prone

One of these couplings is a single characterization. The other is made up of two characterizations.

Watch the review sometime, he uses the test on both good characters (Han Solo and C-3PO) and bad characters (Qui Gon Gin and Queen Amygdala). If you see the behind the scenes extras for that review they released a few years later, you'll see they also did one for Princess Leia that didn't make it into the review. The fact is it is a very good test for getting a feel for how well developed a character is. It reveals bad characters and confirms good characters. So even if you think Marinette is a well developed character, the test still "works" for her. The test always works, though individual characters sometimes don't.

The only part you're right about is Chat Noir you're completely off in regards to Marinette and Ladybug and for a very simple reason too.

Marinette lives a double life, but unlike Adrien who views being Chat Noir as a liberation from his manicured life, Marinette views being Ladybug as a duty and responsibility. She's aware of the consqueces of what her failure could bring. It's not that she doesn't doubt herself it's that she doesn't have the luxury to do so.
