The only things they publish that actually sell worthwhile numbers are Walking Dead and Saga, pretty much everybody else would be better off with a publisher that offered editorial support and took a bigger cut of the sales to pay for it. Image appears to be making money for nothing to the detriment of creators.

It also doesn't help that they flood the market with as many books as a large publisher each month but don't have the audience reach to sell anything like as many. It must be hard for LCS owners to know what to take a chance on other than with existing names, because there's now so much shit coming from Image that you can't really preview it all easily. Again, a larger publisher might once have sent out gratuity copies to trusted retailers in order to get them interested in new lines; but with Image there's so many titles constantly stopping and starting that it becomes impractical... and on top of that, the very sporadic nature of sales does not build an audience. While I can appreciate that many smaller Image names might have real lives getting in the way of their sideline writing comics - because they won't be making enough to live on by any stretch of the imagination - every 14 year old with a YouTube channel, popular Tumblr or Twitter account knows you have to be consistent and you don't miss putting out content.

The Walking Dead is probably past its peak as a tv show (and certainly as a comic). It'll plod on for a little while but eventually collapse, taking with it a good chunk of Image's sales. Saga too; all things end, largely because they lose popularity. While Image might be happy to keep putting things like Spawn out on 2 copies sold a month, it's not a solid model.

tl;dr they've fallen foul of not having any editorial base at all, have no real plans and basically rely on the fortunes of individual titles, which would be fine if they could consistently pick winners; but Image doesn't seem to be able to discover new winners
>>
>>87423848
>The only things they publish that actually sell worthwhile numbers are Walking Dead and Saga
you just don't pay any attention. Monstress was a huge success and was hitting top 10 charts. Seven to Eternity may be another huge success but it's too early to tell. And there are plenty others that sell well enough. Because they don't have a shitty corporate top heavy structure they don't have to sell as many books to earn the same amount

Knowing that this might derail stuff and stating for the record that I like Fantagraphics let me just ask:

Why do you think he's a Trump supporter? Because he used pepe which originates from Boy's Club, a comic published by Fanta?
>>
>>87423848
>The only things they publish that actually sell worthwhile numbers are Walking Dead and Saga, pretty much everybody else would be better off with a publisher that offered editorial support and took a bigger cut of the sales to pay for it
Uh no?
Saga and TWD are like Batman
They're the outliers of the publisher but it doesn't mean everything else sells like shit.

Paper Girls, Monstress, I Hate Fairyland, Bitch Planet, Tokyo Ghost, Descender, The Wicked + The Divine, East of West, etc all sell really well in floppies and even better in trades.
If the creative team keeps it alive past 10 issues then it probably sells just fine for them, and Gillen (?) has said that 10k in floppies for an Image book in a cause for celebration.
>>

>I’ll give you some really basic rule of thumbs for indie comic commentary:

>Anything selling stably over 10k in single issues is a cause for celebration and joy. The creators are almost certainly extremely happy.

>>
>>87424237

>>
>>87423848
Anon, it's BECAUSE there is no editorial oversight and big publishers taking their book's profits is why creative teams are just fine with their Image books selling 10k in floppies.
10k for an image book is very comfortable, especially if the writer and artist do other shit at DC and Marvel, but 10k for a dc or marvel book is well below cancellation level.

And that's not getting into how much better Image in general is with their trades compared to Marvel and DC, and how you get full creative control over your comic, unlike the contracts WB forced on vertigo.

And also you're ignoring the books that sell 15k-35k.
>>
>>87424440
Not as sad as the big two having to rely on relaunches, crossovers, events, and variants to boost their sales.

These books sell but they're all from known names. I think what that anon was going for was that if you're literal who, nobody is going to buy your fucking book 99% of time. At least at Vertigo or Dark Horse, etc they will pay you, assign you an editor and market your fucking book.

Image does NONE of that, they just print it. Many creators benefit from having editors, some Image books even have editors on them(Moonshine,Black Magik,Bitch Planet) but those writers/artists have to go out and get them, Image doesn't provide them. Image is great if you're brand name creator who was semi-successful and has an established fanbase.

An anon from a previous Image thread said Image was glorified self publishing and he's right. They put out good books tho.

do guys have any rebuttals that aren't "lol" and "yeah right"? i'm a bit of industry expert and you may not like their marketing strategies or business views or pay rates but they definitely do them.

There doesn't need to be a big three. If you want to put Image up there then fine, but if you don't then it's just a big two of Marvel and DC

It's like those idiots who were talking about what the new 'big three' of shonen was after everyone stopped reading Bleach.

Image is much better at marketing unknowns than Dark Horse is now. If Dark Horse was any good at marketing then they would have had a successful new series in the past 10 years.

The Black Hammer will be big, just wait and see.

Christ, the story better be worth it.

Too much Poser/Sketchup wankery. You can tell because the artist goes out of his way to add a layer of false rendering to cover it up, hence the fucked up disgusting mish-mash of line and paint (especially on the faces)

Will not read

They should be promoting the shit out of Harrow County, it's easily one of the best ongoing comics right now out of anywhere. I think it's getting a tv show so maybe that will help

He's maybe the most wildly inconsistent writer I follow, but where he hits, he knocks it out of the park.

>Dem Walking Dead sales

Fucking hell. How much is Kirkman worth? Why not just run Invincible at at a loss ?

Googling his net worth says $20 million

Too many high-concept TV pitches masquerading as comics.

Huge delays between issues.
>>
>>87433573
Heavy Metal always had those bizarre covers.
>>
>>87423272

They had Millar once.

And there's the hilariously bad misogynerd arc of Crossed.
>>
>>87423079
I'd vote for Valiant if a good hunk of their published works weren't totally crap

Seriously, who was the genius who put Vendetti on Eternal Warrior?
>>
>>87439470
>the Valiant Hater again
>>
>>87421705
Comics (at least in the west) writing is by usually every pitch based, i.e. they have a basically idea for a plot but no basic outline, so longer running series always end up going to shit after a while.
