That's a pretty skewed recap, though, considering how Gregory helped guide and drive Kurt Gerhardt on, but I think there's a deliberate theme going here

On the upside Bemis and the editors of this seem to know that, too, and are writing it accordingly.

Gotta point out, he doesn't look a thing like Gregory either.

Greg was a blond, kinda Charlton Heston looking guy. This guy has more of a Gregory Peck thing going. Not like he'd be the first Foolkiller to seriously change his face, though.

It has a strong hook, makes use of continuity both recent and old. It explains how he went from his stint as Foolkiller to the Mercs for Money to working as a psychatrist while also making it clear that there is more to it than explained here. It establishes two different plot hooks, one with Shield contact and another at the end of this issue. All in the span of one issue.

That is already much better than many of Marvel other #1s this year (e.g. the current Thunderbolts).

POP CULTURE REFERENCES!!!!!

Holy shit, I mean, this reads better than most Marvel books right now but I don't know what to say about those references, either part of the style or a lazy crutch.

Like I can see it how a hardass mercenary talking about mundane stuff creates a nice contrast about living as a super criminal vs living like an average person.

But I can see it getting annoying

>Fake Weezer Glasses

Aaaand now i'm reading him in the same voice I read Boomerang's narration in Superior Foes, due to the scummy first person narration.

Its a cocky New Yorker putting on a fake Aussie accent.
>>
I really like how this makes the other aspects of Greg's life the less definite ones. He can move to new things and new identities in his other lives, because Foolkiller is the anchor and the strongest and most definite identity. It plays into capes in general but vigilante stuff especially, and Kurt had some of this too. It gives me hope that his recounting of events may not be 100% too.
>>
>>87418402

I usually only buy in TPBs, but in this case I may part with my usual principles and buy it digitally just to give some support.
>>
I loved this, thank you, it seems marvel is better at solos than teams.

>>
>>87418364

>>
>>87417875
Yeah. This is the guy who, when he couldn't be Foolkiller, induced another guy to be Foolkiller. I think Gregory thinking this is totally in-line with how he is in this issue, without overwriting any of what we actually saw in the Gerber mini.
>>
>>87417792
Do you think they tried to make him look like "Rodney" Nicholas Lyndhurst?
>>
>>87417840
>still no explanation of the conch

>>87417955
This guy Gary could have been written by Spencer/Lieber.
>>
>>87419131
I read all the pop culture stuff and the hipster life habits as, well...even the Foolkiller can be a current fool, until something happens to shock him out of it. At least that's the arc I see as possible after one issue.
>>
>>87418063
Chances this is gonna be true?
>>
>>87421327
Sure. He's kind of distanced himself from the whole thing. He followed a guy who wasn't much, and a guy came after him who was a psychopath. "It's my dad's fault, right?"

BUT. HE. IS. THE. FOOLKILLER.
>>
>>87421505
I hope he makes up some of the business cards again, those were great.

I want to make a full-on pirate hat Foolkiller costume for next year. No one would know who I was, but...
>>
>>87421575
What's essentially a spandex cowboy outfit would probably be a lot hotter in person than it is on the page. If you could pull it off.
>>
>>87421679
I'm betting good support garments are the vital part. Ugh, seams, tho...
>>
Here's the Bemis interview from July:

http://www.cbr.com/exclusive-max-bemis-puts-fools-on-notice-in-marvels-foolkiller/

>I did some reading up on it — I almost didn’t want to know too much. I didn’t want to go back and read every Foolkiller appearance. The idea that we’re starting with is very different, and since he’s never really been fleshed out as a person, I reinvented — or invented — Greg like a new character, in a way, without disregarding anything he’s done in the past. There’s just not much.

Something changed in the writing, I think.
>>
>>87422279
Maybe he was lurking with JSA-anon's FoolKiller mini storytimes.
>>
>>87422327

>>
>>87418385

have you read recent deadpool this week? it was hilarious, you couldn't be more wrong.
>>
>>87419315
If we support this, it might last twelve issues.
>>
>The tone of the comic is what doesn’t feel unique. It has the jokey tone that we see in Deadpool or in Solo and that was perfected in Hawkeye. So, the comic feels like a cope of those series in many ways, just with a different setting. It’s like a write by numbers network sitcom. Change the characters and settings, leave a lot of the rest the same.

what Hawkeye book featured the MC snapping a guy's neck, I think I missed that one

This was genuinely good as a one shot, so I'm interested in how the keep it up. Much better than Solo's book.
>>
>>87424400
Solo's first issue made me think that if you want to do as straight of an action book as that these days, you need to have exceptionally responsive art and plot the fights/sequences in as much detail or else it's too generic. There's not enough of a tonal hook other than that.

Ah, nvm.
>>
>>87424862
why are the letters in his book backwards?
>>
>>87418474
It's kind of hard to read Gerber's stuff and not want to build on it. The man's work was brilliant.
>>
>>87419315
>shit like Gwenpool gets two volumes...
But Gwenpool is fantastic? It's one of Marvel's best current ongoings. Assuming you're just basing this off the ASSUMPTION that it's bad, you should really give it a read and make up your own mind on it.

I miss that costume.
>>
>>87417932
I really like that logo though. He should be proud of himself for that if he thought it up.

RIP

I was immediately more interested in the preview when I saw that costume was making an appearance

the capekink with it was the icing on the cake

Deflecting any responsibility for goading Kurt over BBS may be a plot point, Anon.
>>
>>87434514
Oh, he's totally in denial about his responsibility, there.

He wasn't a twink. He was just a regular guy with a slightly phallic schnoz.
>>
>>87418080
That's not a little girl on the end of that chain.
>>
>>87434831
Hell, he was the one who TOLD him to go after "small game."
>>
>>87417696
Is that supposed to be Crossbones or just some generic masked supervillain type?
>>
>>87433901
Dare we hope for Kurt in#3?
>>
>>87417840
Killing druggies and bitches. Kurt is a hero.

I see someone was browsing /co/ for the Foolkiller storytime this summer.
>>
>>87417955
Christian Slater?
>>
>>87424862
Who wrote this?
>>
>>87440286
Huh, it was Amy Chu. Duggan wrote the Solo backup, and various others wrote more of the backups.

This just makes me miss Mettle.

Is that dude he just shot supposed to be someone we know?

"Tin man"?
>>
>>87418166
Not Queens, not yet, though it'll become that if the hipsters and yuppies make it the new Brooklyn.

>>87418364
Whelp, this went exactly where I didn't want it to go but expected it to end up.
>>
>>87418265
I nearly checked out after the first page but now I'm glad I didn't

>>87419518
Isn't Boomerang a cocky Aussie putting on a fake New York accent?
>>
>>87422279
I'm used to writers bragging how they read up on everything about the character, and then ignoring all continuity when they start writing.

Here was have someone who brags about not knowing anything about the character, and then gives us one who's continuity appropriate.
>>
>>87417696
Who's this guy on the couch on the cover? Is that Gerhardt Foolkiller? With his costume looking like a recolor of Sallinger's and all.

Plus, that would be a logical place for the serie to go.
>>
>>87440933
There was a Tin Man, some kind of mutant cyborg, but he doesn't look like that dude. Perhaps he's just saying he lacks heart.
>>
>>87441523
I think that's Greg and his inner Foolkiller, but I would like Kurt to show up in this. Kurt went through a much more arduous rebirth than this guy here.
>>
>>87441899
His last appearance was written by Bendis, after all.
>>
>>87444253
Poor guy.
