This is something that's bothered me about the recent influx of redheaded trans characters in webcomics, is how artists don't draw them with any tells of them being formerly male. You don't just get rid of bone structure, or adams apple, but the way artist draw them it's just like the female characters.

I can't find the announcement post, but there are two posts about it from approximately 2 years ago, while the run in with Mary happened in January of this year.

I'm not sure why it matters whether or not there's a post, though. It is both true that Carla is trans and that Willis did a poor job of conveying that in the strip regardless of any external messaging he did. He even admits it in one of those posts.

Also, while I was looking this up I found several questions about trans stuff that Willis responded to by comparing those who don't agree with his specific opinion about the events of the Ruth Mary thing, with people who "are totally cool with black kids getting shot" or "who think black kids are totally threatening". And I found it detestable that he couldn't establish a solid argument within the framework of the people in the strip, but instead had to reach for a fairly easy to agree upon trend in order to vilify those who don't understand his poorly written story. Say what you will about Cerb's comments, but at least she was forming arguments based on her perceptions of the trans people around her and her experiences as one herself, instead of making some leap to the Armenian genocide or something like that. WIllis doesn't really come across as if he has any experience, though. I'm sure there have been queer and minority people around him at points, but the only things I'd believe he has any personal context for are the depression elements. I just realized the Mary stuff would've went a lot better if it was inverted. Image is just the whole exchange for reference.

Billie encounters Mary in the elevator. Tells her she knows what she did to Ruth. Mary says that it was Carla's fault, and that she'll get revenge for both of them. Maybe she can be more specific. Billie punches her and then gets up in her face and threatens to beat her up if she doesn't leave everyone alone. Mary leaves saying that she'll tell everyone and the RM what Billie did. Runs into Rachel, says that Billie attacked her. Rachel says she doesn't believe her, because Billie told her what she did. Then Billie reveals that she told everyone what's going on.

That would at least add some doubt so that Sierra and Agatha wouldn't have to standby and watch a girl get physically assaulted. You could even have Agatha asking Sierra if she thinks Billie really hurt Mary, and have Sierra say something like "I doubt it, but Billie is in a rough space. Let's make sure *no one* else gets hurt."

The more I think about it, there's no reason Rachel wouldn't just go to the authorities, she's done it before and she's older, I think. I'd imagine she doesn't have patience for bullshit. If you place the "Billie told everyone" part after the attack it puts less emphasis on the blackmail aspect, and more on just forcing Mary to stop.

If anyone cares, a disorder is classified as something that dramatically impedes your life. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by obsessive compulsions controlling your life. When I actually started fighting back against my obsessive compulsions, I decided to drop the "disorder" part since I am mostly functional now.

So theoretically, DID could be not too much of a hindrance to fall into that categorization. I'm the one with the boyfriend with DID, and while it dramatically impacted the first few years of our relationship, it hasn't been a problem in a while. I wouldn't have my boyfriend committed for it, and he copes well enough that he doesn't need therapy. He tried to go to the counseling center on campus a few times, but the only thing that came out of it was very, very good but unrelated.

The comic's drama comes from the fact that it focuses around the girl's wing of the dorm, so it's a lot of typical college-girl drama stuff. Willy was raised by Fundie Christian parents.

He bought into it until he reached college or so, then he lost his religion.

For a while he wasn't really "anti-Christian" with his writing; there were elements of questioning Christianity and plotlines about reconciling ones Christian beliefs with the reality of the world, but that was about it, and Christian characters were just that, characters that happened to be Christian (Joyce's mother and father were devout but possessed a kama sutra and the mother was comically focused on getting her daughter to reproduce).

Then he got deeper and deeper into Tumblr culture and SJWism. Slowly but surely, Christianity became THE boogeyman. Joyce's mother went from lovable Christian lady to crazy zealot. Mary went from an unpleasant and judgemental person to pure fucking evil.

There's a very noticeable dip in overall quality as Social Justice and Political Correctedness pervaded into his work.

I actually do believe him because I'm from a pretty damn fundie family and I know how that can mess with someone's head. So you know, whenever Willis talks about how Joyce is his author surrogate because he himself was a sheltered Christian teen? I get that, I've been there. The thing that pisses me off though is how, over the years, Willis seems to have lost any ability to see the world in shades of grey. I think the thing about his earlier work like It's Walky was that it was sci-fi. So when drama happened there, it involved clones, and time-travel, and alternate universes, and aliens, and so on.

Now his scope is such that drama involves lesbians and homos and trannies and whatnot. And instead of defending the earth from martians, they're defending annoying man-girls from bigotry.

And as an everyday average cis white male who grew up on Transformers and GI Joe and whatever, his grasp on sci-fi would be exponentially better than his grasp on Social Justice issues regardless on how good it is.
