Say what you have to about the iron curtain but some of the animation by the soviets and eastern europeans at the time looks better than the Hanna Barbera and Filmation shit during the dark age of western animation.

Krtek though it appears to have been wiped from the internet region wise. I can't find any shorts in YouTube and Dailymotion. Does copyright holders hate an American watching decades old shorts with a cartoon mole?

I can't speak for the pure Soviet block. We were YU, and YU had its own brand of communism. I remember the classics like Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, Popeye, 60s Spiderman etc. Also in our case (Croatia) we were and are a tourist destination, and lots of families formed long-lasting friendships with the Germans and Austrians who were the most numerous tourists during communist times. Naturally western media was present - as was the VHS, computers like the Amiga, Commodore etc. Ours was never a repressive bleak dictatorship style country. The reasons for its downfall are beyond the scope of the theme, but rest assured they had nothing to do with the economy or similar.

Also important to note - YU was the only communist country in the world that allowed its citizens free unrestricted travel abroad, naturally with visas, passports and stuff. My grandparents criss-crossed the whole of Europe way back in the 60s and 70s and many others did too. YU's standard of living was much higher than what you'd imagine and we pitied the fuck out of Poles, Czecks and so on. In fact all of the ex-YU countries are incomparably poorer now than they were back then. As in, Croatia and Slovenia are in the EU and we're basically the living dead.
