latin america has this thing called the saints calendar that celebrates specific biblical stuff, for example today is "el dia de todos los santos" that celebrates all saints, and tomorrow "el dia de los fieles difuntos" day that celebrates the deceased. it's a thing that goes beyond mexico and has nothing to do with indigenous traditions or prehispanic. mexico celebrates it a lot more than the other latin american countries and includes a bunch of their aztec traditions on the go but it's a wide celebration that also includes the antilles and some south pacific islands.

I watched The Book of Life at a Dia de los Muertos celebration that my city was throwing on Saturday,

Its a good movie. It is boring and slow at times, and I'm not a fan of the male characters looking like legos. The twins were so sexy- I love all the Rule 34 of the twins. It had some good songs, and the ending was good. My favorite scene was Manolo singing to the giant bull. I did cry at the ending when the tour guides revealed themselves as La Muerte and Xibalba, and then Candlemaker told us to write out own book.

I really like how Xibalba accepts losing the bet and gets back together with La Muerte. Its a better end of two feuding deities than the Hercules ending where Hades is thrown into the river Styx. Are we supposed to assume that Hades died or was trapped there forever and now there is no one to manage the underworld?

Sartana of the Dead is also based around Dia de los Muertos. She's a funny villain. I like her in the Ballad of Frida Suarez, and the episode where she tries to marry Grandpapi.

You can tell that Jorge Gutierrez made both El Tigre and the Book of Life. The Book of Life has a few cartoon scenes that have the same animation as El Tigre. Grandpapi Rivera and General Posada have the same voice actor of Carlos Alazraqui.

The Dia de los Muertos episode of El Tigre was basically the same as the plot of The Book of Life. The heroes go to the Land of the Remembered, find their ancestors, go to the world of the living with said ancestors to fight the evil villain.

Its not one of my favorite episodes of El Tigre, and the Land of the Remembered is a lot more festive and colorful in Book of Life. In El Tigre, its basically just a pueblo with a few decorations.

So, do Mexicans believe all of this La Muerte and Xibalba stuff, or is it just a superfluous element on top of a religious holiday like Santa Claus is to Christmas?

t. Guido.
>>
>>87395983
I like how Xibalba and La Muerte are lovers. I like how Xibalba isn't simply seen as the big bad villain like Hades was in Hercules- who is thrown into the river Styx at the end and the audience just assumes he's dead or trapped there forever.

He's a god, he's necessary for the balance of life. The Book of Life is getting a sequel in 2019. The plot doesn't look all that promising.

>>87396422
An eternity of anything would eventually become torturous. The idea of eternity is terrifying. You will eventually run out of stimulation, interest, and novelty. Eventually. It doesn't matter how many septillions of eons of joy you can know, it'll all burn out eventually.

Existence is terrifying. The concept of simply ceasing to exist after death is equally terrifying. An eternity of insensate nothingness is still an eternity. There's no escape from endless despair, whatever form it really takes.

Just as terrifying as simply living once and dying for good; you still lose everything/everyone you hold dear, your very identity and personality, too. Imagine being reincarnated as a depraved serial killer, or someone abducted and tortured by a depraved serial killer. You could just end up being a baby no one ever feeds and die of starvation in a dirt road. Every misery you escaped by being who you are becomes fair game in the roulette of reincarnation.

Day of the Dead is a holiday about remembrance. To Americans they view it in a more festive light because they get to enjoy aspects of Mexican culture (like the food) that they don't get every day. If you're Hispanic a lot of that stuff is just daily life so it doesn't feel special or festive. In my mom's childhood it was kind of a somber holiday even with all the feasts, but it has taken a more uplifting tone over the past decade as other cultures have become interested in the holiday. Personally, even as a Mexican American I feel a little weird celebrating it, because of the immigration we just don't really have anyone dead and buried here yet so we can't really celebrate it. Our family is still too young . . .

If you're Catholic you might already be celebrating All Hallows Eve/All Souls Day which has a similar theme of remembering and honoring the dead.

>Originally, the Day of the Dead as such was not celebrated in northern Mexico, where it was unknown until the 20th century because its indigenous people had different traditions. The people and the church rejected it as a day related to syncretizing pagan elements with Catholic Christianity. They held the traditional 'All Saints' Day' in the same way as other Christians in the world. There was limited Mesoamerican influence in this region, and relatively few indigenous inhabitants from the regions of Southern Mexico, where the holiday was celebrated. In the early 21st century in northern Mexico, Día de Muertos is observed because the Mexican government made it a national holiday based on educational policies from the 1960s; it has introduced this holiday as a unifying national tradition based on indigenous traditions.

Sounds like this whole thing is just an excuse by the Mexican government (Which has been Masonic since the Revolution) to weaken the Church's influence in society.

>>87396703

Not really. While some of it does have roots in Aztex/Mexica traditions (mostly the cempasuchil flower being related to death) what we know as dia de muertos is 95% Catholic, or post-colonial.
Also it didn't use to be celebrated in Mexico as a whole, it's was mostly in the South but was propagated to the whole country by the Education branch of the goverment, to make it a wholesome Mexican holiday. I don't have a source for this one, but if you know someone from the North of Mexico, chances are their grandparent's didn't celebrate Dia de Muertos.

>Monterrey, México. A city at the north eastern part of México. A city that is rapidly growing industrially wise. Many wealthy people live in this city. People that want to have a better life, for their children and for themselves, living with the benefits of having Texas as the nearest american state.
>A wealthy businessman decided to build a big house, for him and his daughter. She was a handicapped child that needed a wheelchair to move around at all times. His father, designed his house in a way that pleased her and also let her move around freely. "The house of tubes" is what everyone in the area seem to know it by. A unique design compared to every other house around it.
>The house was built at the top of the cliff, almost at the highest point of the neighborhood. The house was at the bottom of "the saddle hill", one of the most iconic mountains inside the city. The view of the whole city was phenomenal. Most people say that the wealthy businessman designed the house along with her daughter to please her anyway she liked.
>The house was drawing attention around the city and outside of it too. It was almost finished but the construction didn't progress for a long time. The word started to spread about a strange rumor. It was said that a couple of construction workers have died after accidentally falling of the cliff. This was never confirmed but months later, the construction continued and people around the neighborhood started to see progress again.
>They had constructed more safety ramps for the girl to see the house. She could move up and down each story freely, as the ramps allow her to travel even when the house was almost finished.
>One day, the father and her daughter visited the house at the middle of the day. The constructions workers were doing their thing and the father loose sight of her daughter. In a sudden move, the little girl tried to gain speed with the ramp, but it was too steep for her and to fast to break in time.

>The little girl fell off the window. It was an instant dead. Construction workers were too loud at building they didn't hear her screams, but people of the neighbor claim they did.
>It was horrible, the father was devastated. He put the house on hold. No people were seen around the house for months to come.
>Then, the house had a big sale poster outside the window that led to the front of the city. The businessmen had no reason to keep building the house anymore. The people of the city started the gossip to confirm his daughter death. The house always stood out as a big gray building over a cliff surrounded by green trees. Everyone in the city knew what happened there and why no one purchased the house.
>Several time later, the sale poster was removed. The neighbors have seen people around the house again and concluded that most likely, someone has bought the house.
>A young family, wealthy as well. Probably knew about the incident, everyone knew. But decided to buy the house for themselves.
>The family went inside the house, with the manager in charge of selling the house. A father, a mother and a young boy. The boy was excited, there was no home like this one in anywhere else in the city. There was no "house of tubes" anywhere in the world.
>Distracted by the salesman, the father tried to call out for his son, but there was no answer. He looked for every story, every room but the boy wasn't inside the house.
>The boy had heard a voice from a room with a big window. A soft voice of a girl that called for his name. He approached the window and the voice was very clear.
>"I'm down here. Jump. Jump"
>The family rushed to the bottom of the cliff. They found his son that has jumped out of the windows.
>Authorities expropriated the house. No one was allowed to buy or sell the house.
>The neighborhood claim that, when the city is quiet, if you pay attention and hear correctly, you can hear the voice of the spirits of the children playing at the house.

We don't, but its still a holiday. I think we mourn instead of make a huge celebration out of it. I actually think that is pretty beautiful. My great-grandmother is a writer and she dulled the concept of death to me, she has a bunch of funny stories of ways she died and kept on looking at the world in her unique skeptical, sarcastic way. May whatever god bless her soul. Gonna see if I visit her grave tomorrow. Gotta remember not to cry and stuff, she always wrote how she hated that.

Yes, They even won a lawsuit against disney over the name Dia de los Muertos.

Thats the same reason why the disney movie changed its name to Coco.

This is the official Website. http://www.dayofthedeadthemovie.com/

>>87405291
Both apparently but just because there are not many dia de los muerto /co/ related things out there, this could change in a couple of years though both Disney and a mexican studio called Metacube are making there own Día de los Muertos movies.

Have some concept art from the mexican movie if you are tired of the skeletons, she doesn´t look like anyone from the movie but shares the name with the main character of the story so either the movie changed a lot from the original concept or at some point the girl becomes a tribal witch.

Why do all niggas here think it's a sad thing?
Do none of you get happy remembering the good times with those who no longer are with us? Death is something we can't stop, it's natural, there is nothing to do about it but to see what good left the one who died.

You got a point, man. A while back, I was watching home videos of opening presents at my grandmother's house. My grandfather (no longer with us) was on the couch, entertaining my then baby sister. He passed when I was young, so being able to see him as an adult and understand how he was such well-loved individual made his absence sting a little less.

>Personally, even as a Mexican American I feel a little weird celebrating it, because of the immigration we just don't really have anyone dead and buried here yet so we can't really celebrate it. Our family is still too young . . .

Not only that but you missed the school experience, when I was a kid and I lived in mexico we would also do our own altars, we would make paper skeletons and dress them up, make sugar skulls with our names, etc...

And I was only in a Mexican school up to middle school (then my family moved to the US because my dad felt like it and his side of the family was living in the US) up to secondary school we would also compose calavera poems.

Typically people make them about people they know (or like pic related just about any other subject) but Calavera poems are usually poems that deal with life and Death or are about how La Muerte/Death is going to take a person and even if the subject is kind of macabre the poems themselves tend to be funny and whimsical.

In elementary school I wrote a poem about Death having trouble taking my fat teacher and that he had to roll him up to the land of the dead, my teacher loved it and he entered it to the school's Calavera poem contest and I won first place because it made people laugh the hardest.

The average Mexican is hardcore Catholic tho and most that I know tend to go to Church even during Día de Muertos, not to mention the celebration is a mix of prehispanic Mexica traditions and All Saints Day.

That said the holiday is not as popular or as cool nowadays as Halloween is and you'll see most rich people and people in the Northern parts of Mexico not celebrating it that much still.

Supposedly the Mexican government said that they were promoting it because the traditions are fading and some regions will shove it with Halloween (like kids in the south will ask for their calaverita while kids in the North do the standard trick or treat or "triki triki").

Then there's also the fact that there is a lot of migration from people in the Southern parts of Mexico to the Northern parts, Baja California alone has a lot of Chilangos and people from different parts of Mexico and all that culture clash and people bringing their traditions it is bound to influence some of the people in the north.

-the extra scene of the previous film, it was only a dream in this.
-the secondary characters are again a nuisance that contributes nothing.
-each time, you lose the placing in the main plot, because the subplot of the secondary characters interrupting each time (mention that this is filler to lengthen the film).
-They justified the slaughter of chupacabras with the lame excuse of looking for his family even though for most of the movie did not look at all
-the jokes and references are not funny at all

Actually it has more to do with economics

The "baby bust" of the 1970s didn't get really bad until the recession and stagflation happened, the echo boom of the 1980s/early 1990s correlates with a growing economy and decreased during the recession of the early 1990s. Birthrates among whites again decreased after the Great Recession. There is a lot of evidence to suggest in addition to short term economic troubles like recessions the longer troubles of decreasing wages due to excesses of workers caused by corporations aggressively recruiting cheaper foreign laborers has resulted long term in whites choosing to have fewer kids as their ability to pay for these kids to go to college has waned. Outsourcing and outmoding of jobs through technological growth also has an impact on this.

Now that you mention children, there are a couple of incidents in that same city involving children being brutally murdered.

Where I live, when I was a child, any child could be outside unitl 9 pm without adults.

If someone got stabbed it was huge news and everybody was talking about it for weeks.

15 years and one Felipe Calderon later and now hearing about someone getting murdered/raped is "eh"

This was art from last year, doesn't look that great but might as well share it.

Despite my family being half Mexican, we don't celebrate Dia de los Muertos. I'm kind of bummed out seeing as this holiday sounds depressing, it's actually quite touching and really helps me cope with death.
>>
>>87458950
Its easy being "happy" and enjoy Christmas when you get gifts and eat like a mofo, everybody pretending they give a fuck, "the magic".

But this season, is truly magic, you can feel it, thinking in the people that we lost and all this supernatural stuff. Life giving us some days to believe that life is not just a nihilistic empty descent into oblivion and dust.
That ironically, death proves the life's value.

I love this days, walking in the streets of the city or my old town, the cold, the rain. Washing the graves, decorating the altar. Hoping that they are happy and not forgotten. You can feel something in the air.
I just wish this thread, this days, last more.

I pity the non-mexican people who can't know such joy
>>
>>87459532

im mexican and i think you sound like superstitious faggot
>>
>>87459650
I bet you are Brayan.

I don't say that supernatural is real, I'm just saying that this is a lovely time of the year, thinking in the people that left us.

But I guess you are right, now you can go to sleep so you can wake up early for your fucking secundaria técnica.
