DESU where does this appear in pop culture past 1995?

Every movie I've seen has the dumpy male/female going to great lengths to be perceived as attractive by their targeted mate and either

a) through situational wackiness and adventure the target mate realizes that the person is desireable even without all the bullshit and falls for them

or

b) they fail to impress the targeted mate but along the way fall for the best friend who's always seen the good in them the whole time.
>>
>>87390555
Comics and cartoons seem like an odd interest if you are tired of tropes. Perhaps it's time to read some literature.

>>
>>87392400
Not quite the same
But Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs does this
Girl takes off glasses and is suddenly beautiful but has to abbandon her nerdy interests for some reason?
At some point she decides that being a nerd is a part of her, puts on her glasses again and is ugly again
Because you can't be a nerd and physically attractive at same time
>>
>>87392612
if they're switching bodies they're also switching vocal chords
It's a very interesting acting excercise from the actors to see them try to get the inflections and language of a different character
Keeping original voice doesn't make sense and it's lazy
>>
>>87392676

>he's again the butt of all the others' jokes
>this is supposed to be a positive thing

I can't really think of any cases where the loser wasn't already a shit to begin with, thus making the outcome warranted.

>science vs magic episodes

I've yet to see a show that does this well. Most of them don't get past the surface issues of science being dehumanizing or magic being a cipher for more traditional beliefs. The actual closest show was Avatar or even Korra, but Korra dropped the ball on this in S2. Avatar S2 and Korra S3 were pretty much the only time I've seen this done okay-ish.

The reason was she realized it was much easier for her to get a job as a sexy weather girl than to try to be taken seriously as an actual meteorologist, but the weather girl gig called for a ditzy personality to fit the role and nobody wanted to hear the sexy weather girl talk about actual meteorology, because it confused them to see a pretty girl talk about sciencey smart things and no one believed her. true, but wouldn't you be a little more open to the idea that werewolves are real if you know vampires are?
>>
>>87399685
This is due to the writer being dumb though. A character can't come up with a strategy that's more intelligent than something the writer could come up with, even if he should based on character traits.

This is why I'm of the opinion that people should ask for help when writing. If they want a clever plan, ask the smartest, most creative guy they know to make up a plan that the character would. If you need help with a science character, ask someone who knows about science, etc. I guess that's why friends are important. Oh well.

But I've never once seen that happen with a good looking intelligent woman.

This is actually the trope I hate the most in cartoons. It's always the same story every time, they may as well be doing re-tellings of Aesop fables if the writers are going to be that lazy.
>>
>>87400983
To be fair, it's not that unrealistic. Pushovers with low self-esteem usually have a lot of repressed anger in them, as well as a very exaggerated idea of what being confident and assertive really means, since they've never really experienced it themselves.

>>
>>87401062
It doesn't need a real world example. The entire point of the bit in Cloudy was that they were caricatures looking for other familiar stereotypes from movies and stuff. That's why they did the joke where she puts her hair up and Flint suddenly finds her more attractive: it was a reverse of a popular movie trope. Nobody in real life does that. I don't think it really mattered what her gender was. People just didn't accept she was a nerd until she put on glasses and started looking dorky enough, because in cartoons smart people look like dorks. Or, at least, in the cartoons that the creators grew up with that they were riffing on. I think the hyper intelligent, super competent and also very attractive female character type is a newer thing. Attractive women weren't often also the geniuses in older fiction.

This made me think of one:
>family is from a certain country
>some of the family have an accent from their homecountry, but some family members have a completely different accent for no reason

Fieval and Tania arrive in the new world right off the boat without any accent while their parents have very heavy accents.

But that doesn't bother me as much as Dexter in Dexter's Lab, who's from an American family yet he inexplicably has a swedish accent for no reason.

I apologize I was eating dinner. It started in old fashion comics where it was still uncool for the protag to beat women even villains and now evolved into a common form of comedy. Im sure you can see it is so saturated its not even funny, remember the threads about lame and overdone tropes. For examples there is the above mentioned old comics of the villainess/heroine being unharmed or wailing on the often male opponent and in cartoons fairly commonplace in more adult media like The Simpsons and Family Guy. I admit its a lot more common in Eastern media but I find this trope much more interesting when deconstructed to some extent

Isn't that more of an inferiority complex? A projected assertiveness but without any actual self-esteem.

That in itself would be a more interesting look on confidence?
If they realised that said character's self-esteem was just as bad as before, and the protagonist convinced them to give up the obnoxious behaviour and got them to start on path to actual self-acceptance instead of switching to the doormat they where before.

You ever hear of the Aristotelian unities? Greeks thought drama had to take place over no more than 24 hours. Could be more exaggerated.

Really, though, I guess extreme survival situations, where everyone is under extreme duress, would cause people to bond much faster than ordinary day-to-day living. If two people are fighting for their lives and saving each other, that's going to matter.

Plus, since the audience is watching, since it feels like a long time has passed, the movie acts like it did, whether or not that's true in-universe. Otherwise it'd be pretty monotonous to watch relationships develop in most movies/shows.

I get that the magic in most these settings usually follows pretty strict guidelines and everything so... Well that is a remnant of the fact that most of Western culture's literary tropes come from the medieval era, where most of the countries that the authors were writing in were kingdoms, the big scary exotic nations looking to take them over were empires, and the few republics that existed were all corrupt, chaotic messes.

If a certain form of magic exists, it doesn't necessarily follow that god/gods or other supernatural occurences exist. Or that the comic relief character can break reality and predict the future, that's what you are referencing right?
