no connection to Mockingbird (seeing as she was dead for most of my comics reading history) but I enjoy the art on this.

hope she gets put on something good (alternate on the new Wasp book? some Scarlet Witch issues? the new Jen Hulk series??)

writing is generic so far.

What is really bad is that the girl dont have an "out" so to speak.

She isnt traumatized or shocked or anything. there is no immediate danger. She is pretty calm taking the situation under consideration. Unnaturally calm even for her age and situation.

If she had spent 30 seconds to tell the cops "My power trapped my friends in a bubble and i need to make sure the bubble dont burst" noone would have gotten hurt.

Instead she freaks out at a chopper and then a little while later she deliberately kills three other people.

It a bizarre ending to a story. What happens afterward? I dont need the story ending with the cops gunning her down in the street. But everyone seems to be unaware that she had just killed four people.

People have been more concerned by stepping on gum.

well, I mean the murder mystery cruise idea is... ok? I guess. I mean, it's a classic story. and the ghost possession murder/suicide was an ok twist.

But the whole story doesn't really fit with the sexy spy action of the first few issues. Feels like Chelsea just wrote it while she was on a cruise herself. For a comic selling itself as sexy spy action, there was zero sexy spy action in those last three issues.

and I could've really done without the YES I LIKE WINE AND CORGIS every issue. Pretty fucking basic.

Man, what a frustrating fucking series. I do hope she doesn't give up on comics. Maybe give her a co-writer or something to make sure she doesn't go off the rails.

I won't even comment on muh tampons
>>

Yeah. There is not only a lack of sexy spy action, but a lack of basic coherence. They just flail around for a while then she unmasks the villain and for some reason dont actually attempt to battle him herself but sics a posse of nerds at him.

Its nothing fun, or clever or impressive here. Its almost devoid of content.
>>
>>87380041
Its just quirky humor aimed at women. Its not supposed to be actiony or dramatic. If the fact that in over half of the issues hawkeye or hunter war naked for half their screentime didn't give it away. The feminist plugs were a bit much but if you don't think it seriously I think its tolerable.

>>87380188
Its going back and forth. It showed the setup with the clinic visits, then it shows the inbetween stories. The cruise ship happened just prior to her showing up with the Corgi. The first issue provided a broad timeline, and you use her costume to establish when events are set. I suspect the next issue would be the climax to the clinic stuff.
>>
Now that I've read the entire series(I took it off my pull list after issue 3). It was okay. Issues 3 and 8 were ill advised. I guess this is what happens when editors don't do their jobs.

The writer would have been advised their story was going to get cancelled before hand and she should have used that time to wrap things up in the final issue.

Gotta disagree. The main plot was stupid bullshit about psychic powers and a virus. The entire point of it was quirky fan service. The sidestories were the real meat. I get the feeling the author didn't even want to write about a superhero; she wanted to write about shipping.

Look at this: >>87378509. This is the final page. This is what the author thought was important.
>>
>>87380318

Even CBR, who published an article suggesting that comics fandom is "dead" in the wake of the Chelsea Cain controversy, put out a write-up earlier today about how the "Mockingbird" #8 retcon makes little sense when put up against the overall context of the original Englehart story.
>>
>>87380853
I guess it was Cain's attempt to "leave her mark" on the story. All it did was make Bobbi look bad and insure she would not be used for anything for a while. I would not surprise to see Marvel put the character on ice.
>>
i'm glad this comic is finished, it really deserves to burn
>>
>>87380919
I'd assume her primary thought was to remove the rapey part of her history. Was there any actual implication of rape, or was it the kind of mind control where they save sex for marriage?
>>

>i'm glad this comic is finished

>>
This was so good for two issues

Then I dropped it like a nasty ass brick after issue 3
>>
>>87381129

But she still killed the dude.

It is understandable if she killed her rapist if not strictly legal.

Its a lot different if she murdered a annoying stalker. Particularly if he was as pathetic as shown it this issue.
>>
>>87381599
That's what I mean, or at least what I meant to mean.
Cain probably wanted to remove Mockingbird's rape, but didn't give it any other thought outside of the basic change.
>>
>>87375788
Nice comic dump OP. Question, how much money did you lose on that botched comic of yours? None, a fucking ton, in the middle? Just for the indie comic industry edification please.
>>
>>87381712
I think it's that she focused so narrowly on rewriting the story so Bobbi was making a decision as opposed to being acted upon (by being drugged) that the "Does this imply?" readings took her a little bit by surprise. Her twitter explanations of POV emphasized it being a complex story, but felt kind of half-assed.
>>
>>87382418
That's probably what it was.
Her primary goal was to remove the rape from Bobbi's backstory, but didn't actually put any other effort into explaining how the original story was affected.

It's this bit in the second panel, where she admits that Phantom Rider never raped her, she chose to fuck him and CLint's just deluding himself about the whole affair.
She did throw PR off a cliff, though.

To wit, it wasn't some fever dream.

However, i do think that the series communicated that while she saves people at the end of the day, she isn't that great a person(Drugging her husband, the end of #2 etc.), the girls at the end of #3 are clearly weirded out by her behavior. With that shit in mind, her lying to hawkeye about the phantom rider thing isn't too far a reach.

She basically combines the bad personality traits of Lana and Archer

From her tweets I wouldn't be surprised if Cain had never read the original story at all and had only heard about the Phantom Rider story second or third hand.

I wouldn't be surprised if all of the research Cain did for this book was just reading Wikipedia and calling it a day.
>>
>>87393426
Yeah let's just ignore the part that retcons Bobbi into an adulteress and straight up murderer. That's totally fine. /co/ is just mad because the book is "mediocre".

>sexist

They have a woman's locker room, clearly they have female scientists.
>>
>>87390391
Don't you know why Cain wrote her like this?
This whole series was one big bait.
She knows we hate that lingo, we'd react, she'd insult us, we'd insult her back because we're easy to taunt and then the social media would feast upon it.
Trouble is, we were mostly ignoring her because no one was interesting to even skip through her lousy comic to know what's written in it, thus the final issue's cover.
It was a bait.
>>
>>87378509
>Ends with Bobbi having a sexy threesome with her ex-husband and her secret agent BDSM boytoy

I guess we know what her feminist agenda is.
>>
>>87377764
I think a lot of people complaining about the last issue should read Chelsea's answer to the second letter here.
>>
>>87394508

So our options are either that she is a murderer or that she is delusional?
>>
>>87392685
>She basically combines the bad personality traits of Lana and Archer

I think the problem with that is that Archer and Lana usually get called out on their bullshit in some capacity, while Mockingbird tends to brush aside Bobbi's sociopathic moments as quickly as they're introduced.

Take the whole thing with Hunter. If Lana had left Archer handcuffed to a bed to go to a doctors appointment Archer would at least greet her a token "Lana what the fuck" the next time they met. But Hunter doesn't even mention it the next time he runs into Bobbi it doesn't even get a passing mention.
>>
>>87393183
Wait, so Phantom Rider was a good guy up until that point and suddenly flipped out at what should have been the end of an adventure and kidnap/raped Mockingbird?
>>
>>87375930
>>87375945
I feel like the sarcasm chart and the cutaway to her attacking Tony should have been put inside thought bubbles.
So it is showing her imagining them or remembering them instead of them being the real life of this story. Kinda like a milder version of that Pool-O-Vision Deadpool writers sometimes use.
>>
>>87394508
That just makes it worse. If you're going to embellish a tale, DnD nerds isn't really the way to go.

Like shit. How about this. It's a Halloween cruise, everybody is dressed up in costume, only his isn't a costume at all! He's the real ghost rider!

And you could have her team up with another hero whose there to relax, but went to the party dressed as themselves. Like the Scarlet Witch or somebody. Fuck if I know.
>>
>>87393588
She definitely read it, because the "If I can't have you no one can" moment is a direct quote of the original.
>>
>>87395422
I'm not sure if that really proves that she read it (or at least read more than a few panels posted online) since "If I can't have you, no one can" has been used so often in fiction it's pretty much a cliche at this point.

And Cain's retcon still overlooks some very glaring plot-holes clashing with how the original story went down and her defense of the retcon about the original being "Hawkeye's POV" don't make much sense in that context.
>>

>>
>>87376882

Yeah, this is where I'm done.

Not the gender bullshit, the girls being lined up like a billboard. It's the complete disconnect of Bobbi to the world around her and that a writer or editor thought it's a good thing.

People died, all easily preventable deaths, families affected. And she's showboating with a shit eating grin and no fucks given like the shit heads in The Boys. How are you supposed to find any superhero like this heroic? And if she was going for an Archer type of comedy, she could be fucking consistent in tone.

>>87402566
The girls, yes. But before, there was the newsman who crashed with the helicopter, causing more casualties, then the reporter the girl killed intentionally and in cold blood, the cameraman as well, a police officer and possibly other people too.

All people with families just trying to do their jobs who the girl apparently killed just to flex her powers.

But it's fine because they were men, and "all 12-year old girls are dangerous" and she was wearing a feminist t-shirt so you know it's just teen angst. Who gives a shit if five to seven people died because we were waiting for the sun to come out to save 4 people! Chardonnay! Smile for the camera, girls!

>>
>>87378214
But can Bobby beat the cock ?!
>>
>>87376882
What awful, biased, poorly written work. What gets me is it's not unfunnies-tier bad, but it's so insular, self-congratulatory, horribly and uneducatedly biased, inconsistent in tone and pace, and it's fucking reveling in a "hero" who supposedly does good things but lacks general empathy and fails to do anything actually heroic or genuine. Apparently tampons are a big thing in this issue? What an empty, vapid way to "tackle" sexism. It's an insult to actual real life sexism. And calling this act revolutionary? Horrendous. Christ, the gall on these people.

I wish I could say this book is anything other than shameful. Shameful to Chelsea Cain, shameful to the editors, and shameful to anyone who claims this book is "great" or "groundbreaking" in any way.

First time reader. Issues 1-2 were good, 3 and 8 were disgustingly bad, and the rest were ordinary bad. As people have said, the art is good and isn't the problem.

I don't understand why the internet is trying to push this as a thing. The writing has no artistic merit or lasting value. It makes no meaningful cultural statements. The internet's support of this tripe seems to be "because womyn" which is a terrible reason to support anything.
>>

>>
Do you know what could make this book good? A Miracleman treatment. Seriously there is a lot of potential for the book to become some sort of dream or a distortion of real events. Hell, all of the gags about Corgis could actually turn into a major plot point, so could how all the continuity errors like the Hellfire Club. the Phantom Rider and Mockingbird's origin.

The problem is pretty much all the major comic news websites and blogs are run by a bunch of ultra left "progressives" who feel the need to signal boost shit like this like it's the second coming of Jane Christ, the feministing son of the Goddess of all creation.

It's fucking disgusting how slanted the media coverage is of comics these days. If you aren't licking their boots you are getting crucified by them or ignored by them depending on if they want to sic some big mob of angry tumblr fucks on you.

The average reader isn't going to have their minds changed by that shit though so it will end up cancelled.
>>
>>87375788
Holy shit it's a comic where they ruin an established character to try to make her Archer but half her Archer shit just doesn't fit. I mean the point of Archer is he's a total asshole to everyone and despite being good at what he does it comes around to bite him in the ass. The problem here is you have this heroine who has all the setup for Archer jokes but never gets fucked by her idiotic choices, so it's not funny.
>>

Okay, so I'm a feminist, I have been one for a long time, but this is actually some bullshit. This comic is white taylor swift feminism shit.
>>
>>87376508
>>87379689
This.

Then again, this is written by normies for normies, who think BDSM is this wacky abuse thing freaks do, and don't understand the concepts of mutual support and responsibility inherent to it.

That's the problem with armchair activists.
