Dammit, protestants. We can't assume that people are saved or damned. We can point out where behavior or teachings that people have exhibited are harmful to our souls and separate us from God, but ultimately we can't see in people's hearts and can't judge them perfectly impartially as God does.

It's a grueling, highly rigorous process to canonize saints, which means we have evidence that they are in heaven and are now interceding for the Church on earth. We don't have a process for the opposite.

The general rule for Catholics is "assume they're in Purgatory unless shown otherwise." Which is why prayers and indulgences are so important for the souls of the dead. Just like the saints in heaven can pray on our behalf, we can intercede on behalf of those who have passed on and need to be purified before reaching heaven.

I know how you feel. I was raised in the same type of environment too. One where you literally couldn't enjoy anything unless you were 'doing it for God'. Also having to hand these out to kids on halloween and celebrating 'Hallelujah night' which lead to me being locked into a church all night, knowing that I was gonna get jumped sometime that week for giving out chick tracts instead of candy. I saw Jack Chick at a grocery store in California years ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for tracts or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Twinkies in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the cakes and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each cake and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
