Honest Thoughts?
>>87344278
The detail was amazing.
I think it was a good decision to change the point of view from Nick to Judy in order to lighten the mood of the film.
I hope that all the mindless bureaucracy and inter-office politics don't grind down Judy's hope and optimism.
The worldbuilding was a lot more interesting than the story itself.
10/10
>>87344278
Thought it was great. Can't wait for the sequel.
>>87344463
indeed
Worse than Moana
Besides the forced politically correct terminology, I thought it was pretty damn good.
I enjoyed it quite a bit and appreciated the level of craftsmanship put into the setting as a whole. Really made the world come alive more than a cast of celebrity VOs could. I even bought the book.
That said, I find I spend most of my time in these threads perversely shipping the living hell out of Nick and Judy.
>>87344278
Great art, fun script. The world building was so great that you forget it's a city of talking animals and four completely different ecosystems.
No real weaknesses, all around good film.
Pretty boring, desu.
"What if animals did people things" has been done to death.
>>87344499
nice meme, guys.
>>87344707
I know that it's been done since cartoons began but the issue that I find is its trying to tackle a human issues, racism, to creatures that are so different from each other to try to call them equal.

I agree with everything said above, it's a pretty solid movie, but they violate this rule here a couple times.
>>87344842
i was one of the first guys hyped over this movie, made few memes, hyped people with that silly billion "ladder" thingie, then reality hit like a brick.
Just enjoy what we got, a good movie about talking animals (with meh music, Moana will be exact opposite).
Judy just got a ton more attractive knowing she would vote for Trump. No doubt Hillary would remind her of Bellwether with all of the corruption.
>>87344552
Zootopia will fuck FEEL THE ETHNIC shitskin Moana in the box office, just like it fucked Finding Faggot Dory despite having a fraction of the marketing budget and promotional effort.

The inherent differences of the animals had very little, if not nothing, to do with the theme of prejudice. The setting of Zootopia was clearly built to suit everyone's differences. The theme was almost entirely focused on the dichotomy of prey and predators.

Damn good buddy cop move that actually deserves the "Lets give Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks an award even though animation is a medium and not a genre just so it can never touch Best Picture and ruin our adult movies for adults like us" award

>>87347019
Awards, man. It's about the awards. If Zootopia doesn't win an Oscar it's not going to get a sequel, and we've seen that the Oscar committee votes on animation like fucking idiots: whatever is fresh in their minds will win, and Moana will be fresh in their minds and thus get the most votes (of the people who do vote, since most people abstain because they think watching animated movies is fucking beneath them, the snobs).

>>87347853
Nick is a literal millionaire. Shit was going pretty well for him when we saw him. Yeah tragic flashbacks and whatevs but it got better.

While it is multiculturalism dribble its actually logical, because see there are only a couple animals that have what is called the sadistic instinct or the pleasure created by the suffering of others, the animals shown here lack it thus if they became intelligent they create a utopian civilization that has only has to worry about conmen when it comes to crime.
The sadistic animals are:
Humans
Dolphins
Orcas
Elephants
Chimps
Bonobos
>>87348012
Zootopia was hardly multicultural. It was multi-ethnic, but nobody seemed to actually have different ethos.
>>87348012
>Zootopia sequel set in Aquatopia and they're chasing a serial rapist dolphin
>>87347914
Only if you go by a definition that everyone who has earned $50k a year for twenty years is a "millionaire". We usually only count it if they have a net worth of over a million at a given time, and unless he's Scrooging all his cash into a bin somewhere and stealing/scamming his way into free living expenses the entire time, fairly good chance that his cash on hand is far, far less than a million.
>>87348076
>Penguins of Madagascar had a villain that was a dolphin who was doing it for the evulz

>>87346558
I don't think they can leave the city though. There is so much we didn't see of Zootopia in the first movie. Its designed to be explored by the viewers. That's why it's such a great movie to re-watch. It would be a waste if in the sequel Nick and Judy went to another city when we haven't seen even close to all of Zootopia.
I would like to see Nick and Judy ride on the back of a Golden Eagle and fly through the city. And considering the history of Disney theatrical sequels involving anthropomorphized animal partners who are in will-they won't-they relationships, that might be pretty close to what we get

>>87348267

>>87344976
there should be a scene in Moana where we see a Fox chasing a rabbit
>>87344278
Birds of prey have been known to eat mammals as large as Foxes and Rabbits. I'd like to see Judy and Nick on equal footing of the food chain. Maybe a scene where one of them is going to be eaten and the other needs to save them
>>87348267
Merely somewhere where the waitresses look like foxes.
>>87348421
Chocolate factory fight. Judy falls into a vat and Nick thinks she's been turned into a real chocolate bunny

A lot of the regional release date timing for the movie was to take advantage of local school holidays. In Japan, they waited until right before the Golden Week holdiays.

>>87348592
it was one of the movies that was pitched
Would you still ship Nick and Judy if they were both guys? Or girls?
>>87348634
this is 4chan, that would just make everyone ship them harder
The plot was pretty thin and seemed rushed. The mayor was a shitty red herring and everything indicating him being a bad guy hinged on how he treated his assistant, the ACTUAL bad guy. It didn't give a very good into police methodology despite the whole movie being about cops, and what the hell was up with Judy Hopp's police training montage? She was pitiful, but reading a book somehow made up for her lack of strength and allowed her to cheese through the tests despite not being at all qualified?
I suppose the message there is that everyone can be anything they want to be. But that's a bad lesson and wrong. Shakira had no reason to be in the movie, it felt like when Home tried to save Rihanna's career. Needless and forced. The whole thing ending in a dance number/concert with a song that advocates "doing everything" regardless of illegality or danger was lame.
goodnight, thread

Agreed, Zootopia didn't into what could have been a good cop movie but ended up bogging down because the reason mayor and assistant didn't even try to make sense for Judy and wasn't a good attempt to infer racial tension from predator and prey coming together even though the movie didn't really end up making anything

Don't be so butthurt, fanboy. It's just a family movie
As someone who hasn't seen a Disney movie in a very long time, I thought it was very good.
Judy freaking out over the naked animals was pretty funny. Didn't see it coming. I honestly loved a lot of the "animals doing people things" content, especially with the animals' height being roughly to scale (like the tiny mammals needing their own miniature seating area & door on the bus, giraffes ordering drinks from the stall with the tall delivery chute).
Also made me wonder if Little Rodentia has its own dedicated police force, since even a smaller animal like Judy had trouble operating in there.

This movie is a feast for the eyes, but the story is weak to me.

One of the only Disney movies I didn't mentally check out watching with my niece and nephew.
Little hamfisted with the metaphors and some stuff doesn't totally work but I dig a more modern movie without the usual musical numbers in the middle. Also it isn't some retelling of a classic fable or fairy tale. Judy and Nick are really good characters and have clear arcs and personalities I can relate to.
I enjoyed Zootopia and Big Hero 6 a lot more than most of the other Disney stuff released in the last 10 years.
IMO if they want to do a sequel (and they almost certainly are since it made over a Billion) they need to just swing for the fences with the social commentary angle and find a way to work it in as a B-plot and connect it to the A-plot like the original. If it becomes a generic buddy-cop thing it'll be okay but won't reach the original- the whole setting is basically designed to be an exaggeration of diverse city centers and the complications thereof.
Go fuckin nuts; actually go there with the interracial relationship angle and have Nick and Judy hook up, have her find out that Zootopia is cool with Predator and Prey living together but still finds Pred/Prey or interspecies relationships unacceptable, flip the whole "Judy convinces Nick to believe in the idea of Zootopia" dynamic to "Nick convinces Judy to believe in the idea of Zootopia". It's like pottery. Done. Generate a little controversy while you're at it.

The first CGI movie that I actually liked visually. I mean, let's be honest, something like 'How to Train Your Dragon' or 'The Incredibles', while good movies, aesthetically look like cold diarrhea compared to visual masterpieces like 'The Lion King'. Zootopia was beautiful though, it's the first modern animated movie that I'm not entirely sure would look better hand drawn. I don't know if the tech has gotten better or if the artists have, but if things stay like this, I'm not as sad anymore that we moved to CGI.
That said, the story of Zootopia was mindless junk food for the brain.
>Racism.. BAD!
>Cute animal characters
>Good and evil too simplistically defined in this story about prejudice
>Villain had little motive but to move the first point
And I get it, it's a kids movie, fine. However the original scope of what they were aiming for seemed much grander, so the entier thing felt crippled by how simplistic it had to be to make the higher ups happy. The final product also felt like watching a twitter drama unfold on social media, since the biggest thing at stake was "muh feelings".

Male and female protagonists in a Disney movie don't get together for once; got a good "buddy cop" dynamic going on
Cute, racist, loose-cannon cop bunny is fairly unique and enjoyable.
>>87361956
Forgot to mention, those are points for it; I liked it.
>>87344278
Looks overhyped just like Frozen was, so I haven't watched it yet. It doesn't help my friends wouldn't shut up about it either. Yes, I'm that shallow
>>87347465
To be fair, LK2 was okay. Not good enough for theatrical release, but better than any other Disney sequel, and probably better than a decent amount of theatrical movies.
>>87362208
>overhyped
It wasn't hyped at all.
>>87344278
I like to imagine that it happens in the same universe as StarFox and Zootopia is a city in Corneria
>>87355708
this
>>87362385
Also I'd like to point out that Bunny's dad has a resemblance to Peppy Hare and that both Starfox and Zootopia share the silly "naming people after the animal they are" pattern
Example:
Bunny Hopps
Fox McCloud
Major Lionheart
Gazelle
Wolf O'Donnell (Starwolf)
>>87362461
By the way by pointing out his resemblance to Peppy Hare I'm not implying that they're related, just that the artstyles are somewhat similar
>>87362473
What? Are you saying all rabbits look the same, or something?
>>87362484
No but when it comes to anthrophomorphic cartoon rabbits there's several routes you can go
And when it comes to Zootopia and Starfox they took a pretty similar route
>>87352442
I did when I was little but didn't ever let it show in fear of my family harassing me for it

>hamfisted with the metaphors
I know I'm hours late here but I sincerely hope you're not talking about the 'cute' scene with Judy and the fat receptionist cop, because that was literally Disney getting away with a nigger joke.
>>87344278
FUCK YOU OP!Now I gotta watch it again.
>>87352442
Totally agreed
Just because something or someone is the main protagonist in a kid's Movie doesn't mean that it will influence what girls will grow up loving
If this was the case we'd have a ton of tub chasers because of Shrek
>tfw a girl at my job looks too much like Hopps
>lil button nose, big eyes, round head
>really want to facefuck her until she passes out
>>87362662
I don't believe you I'd have to see a photo
Given the size of Judy's eyes it might not be attractive at all
>>87344278
Why is the majority of concept art for Disney movies so much better looking than the final product?
>the plot was great
y.. you too
>>87362736
>Each frame took extended time and effort to make
>There are people out there who have spent entire days working on Judy's ass
>And have been paid for it
>>87362728
>Disney movies
>Disney
Most concept art in all kinds of media looks better than the final product.
>>87362728
because you pirated it on youtube at silky smooth 480p.
>>87361844
What Josie said at the end of documentary was cringeworthy
>>87362613
I don't think that particular joke was a problem; I was more talking the stuff in the final act when her and Nick find the drugged animals and she does the press conference and all that after.
The press conference, the protests, the scene between her and Nick, etc.
It was all a bit too on the nose after 2/3rds of the movie handles the subtext largely better.
>>87361844
I'm so glad those land whale SJWs in those documentaries got their movie changed to something watchable
had fun watching it with my husband. i don't think i'd ever watch it again though.
>>87362261
>better than any other Disney sequel
>>87344278
It had a beginning, middle, an end, it had character growth, it had an interesting (albeit impractical / logistically unfeasible but perfectly acceptable) world, it had multiple themes, it had people doing the right thing for the wrong reasons and the wrong thing for the right reasons (I guess you'd call that moral ambiguity).
I feel like the sequel will be shit, possibly even direct to disc, and that Nick and Judy will just be friends even though that's not consistent with Judy's character.
Character wise what would happen is someone like the fat cheetah would ask Judy if they're dating and she'd be about to say "no, we're just..." and then he'd say "Yeah I mean a rabbit and a fox? A rabbit CAN'T date a fox, that's just never been done!" and then Judy's inner Locke would shout "DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CAN'T DO!" and then she'd announce (out of spite) she and Nick are getting married and then not be able to back out of it and then decide it's actually for the best anyway and go through with it.
>>87346980
>how much of it was actually animated and rendered?
That's kind of a relative question because you can do very fast renders and animatics if you want and it's not like filming where all the cost is in the film / cameras / equipement / crew / logistics associated with a set and so on and so on.
With 3d you can do very quick renders and you aren't wasting much money, and as long as the designs of the characters (or most of the characters) don't change, you aren't actually wasting time with modeling, texturing, or rigging those characters.
Also all the work on props is fine too, you can reuse all of those, and if you're working with generic rigs you can even reuse animation (with some tweaking), so it's not quite the same as if you completely re-shot a movie (which of course even then you can do editing tricks, like with Back to the Future replacing their lead star after filming had begun).
Don't get me wrong, all those years spent reworking it and so on cost them money, but there's a lot of work that can be salvaged with 3D.

>>87344340
>I hope that all the mindless bureaucracy and inter-office politics don't grind down Judy's hope and optimism.
They certainly would have if not for Nick.
Companionship is what enables us to do amazing things, just having someone there to say you can do something when you doubt it is incredible.
>>87365424
Did you even watch the making of documentary?
The entire collar story was full retard and the entire world was unlikable. They even said numerous times that they were about to scrap the project entirely because they couldn't fix it. Original Zootopia was garbage and to no ones surprise the poison haired fatties that were there were the ones that were pushing to keep it going.
>>87364669
>Nick's movie
>not watchable
Lots of fans would LOVE to see the city from Nick's point of view, just because it's not marketable doesn't mean it's not watchable.
>>87365645
Seriously?
The original script was so absurdly heavy handed that it's the embodiment of cringe. They were so desperate to keep the shock collars that it ruined absolutely everything.
>>87360352
More like racism is an ingrained part of the world, and negative stereotypes reinforce negative behavior which reinforces negative stereotypes (see: Nick's speech and back story).
How were good and evil simplistically defined? They were very much blurred: you had small animal characters doing awful things to big animal characters (in a movie where the goodguy is a little animal), even while those big animal characters are abusing the main character.
The villain (Bellweather)'s motivation was well defined: This is a bid for power, she has hired a number of criminals to facilitate her coup, and she uses the "prey account for 90% of the populace, yet they're dominated by the 10% predators" speech to justify her actions.
It would have been nice if she'd been a bit less smug and a bit more zealous with her prey/predators speech, but that would have muddied the waters a bit.
Also, the things at stake were: predators being systematically poisoned and imprisoned, the complete dysfunction of the city as vital predator jobs sat unfilled due to a scarcity of big prey animals (a loss of 10% of the population is Black Plague levels of casualties), and rulership under a tyrannical leader willing to go to any means to get what she wants.
>>87365667
I see nothing cringeworthy about them.Great tool to show some emotional scenes.People are simply insecure.Grow a spine.
>>87365891
>ur insecure it's not a shitty hamfisted story mechanic at all!
Whatever you say
It was pretty decent.
Preds were clearly whites, always getting blamed for the violence their ancestors committed and having to watch their language around prey feelings.
Not to mention the city went to hell when a prey took office, Zootopia would have ended up like Detroit.
>>87359523
>>87365617
i remember april threads about it,the issue was
they couldn't develop technology back then to create collars (like you said, it was in museum, for decades, so that implies fridge logic)
shit was hamfisted, but since it came from disney writers themselves fandom ate it up
and we got "two" movies in one.
>>87365400
TLK 'won" only becuase it had better songs and animation, after few years Zootopia will fade away just like Bolt

>>87344278
the porn isn't very good, which is odd considering how much pratice furries get.
the only two good doujins are dogear and whoever did what does the fox say.
I think it's a good movie. The setting is great, the attention to detail is incredible, and the characters are nice. The biggest problem is the whodunit is really fucking predictable and the plot is kind of weak but it more than makes up for it.
I don't mind the preachiness because they didn't point fingers and left who is an analogue is for what up to the viewer's interpretation. I've seen people argue predators being a stand in for minorities and others argue the sheep being radical feminism/liberals and you can make a good case for both.
Also unfortunately this. >>87355708
Interesting, if not a bit shallow by the end.
Judy and Nick are one of the cutest couples in Disney canon (Rapunzel and Flynn don't count because I tried to waifu her).
Gf and I did Zootopia for Halloween. We had to pick her up a new wig last minute after the grey one we ordered never came in.
Rate?
>>87367195
I can see the next movie going into the desert biome maybe having a water rights subplot and dealing with frontier law enforcement. Judy and Nick having to deal with a Sheriff that may or may not be in league with water bandits.
>>87368497
7+/10 (if you wash your face, then 8/10)
Someone had really fucked up your make up.
>>87362613
I didn't like Judy's reaction to the cute comment. Clawhauser was just trying to give a sincere compliment, but instead of just taking the flattery she took it as a teaching moment & informed him that the use of the word was inappropriate in that context. That's where the problem with the -isms lie- when you put down someone who was just trying to be nice by saying "we can only say that to others of our species". Judy may have tried to educate & establish courtesy, but it really impersonalizes any relationship between her & Clawauser as now Clawhauser has to watch what he says instead of just being himself.

>>87368768
Clawhauser apologized sarcastically and then said she'd be eaten alive. The first briefing begins with a racial joke at the Elephant before wishing her happy birthday. The scene establishes Judy has her own idea of appropriate language in contrast to the police forces "we will directly insult you while praising you" attitude.
