I really enjoyed those Anderson Storytimes last night
>>87340070
I guess it's punished anon time then.
>>87342537
Usually it's because very early Dredd is very cheesy and odd, while volumes 4-5 are widely considered Peak Classic Dredd. Personally, I've met people who couldn't stand early Dredd and people who loved it like a brother, so I'd rather let new readers make thatjudgmentfor themselves.
>>87343275
I'm a huge superman fan I love every era from silver age to man of steel so that doesn't sound like an issue for me hell a plus
Sounds like how DD went from very cheesy to very dark, that happened organically though was it organic for dredd
Sorry for rambles 3am
>>87343402
It was *very* organic for Dredd. It's worth mentioning that Dredd started out as a comic for kids aged 7-10, and that audience grew alongside the comic. So by the mid 80s you already had stories that delved deeper into the moral questions of the judge system, and by the late 80s there were stories where Dredd openly questioned it. There was a bit of a dark period in the 90s where all that got kinda swept away, but the strip has since settled for a great sci-fi police procedural with an extremely strong supporting cast.
One of Dredd's greatest strengths as a strip is that the lion's share of his stories are written by the same guy, John Wagner (with a lot of help from Alan Grant in the 80s). So what you get is a very straightforward sense of evolution, both for the character and the setting. Same with Anderson, who has been written by Alan Grant around 95% of the time.
>>87343526
>written for 7-10 year olds
huh really? thats interesting I have case files 1 incoming want to get one a week
Is the first issue of 2000 A.D. in the Dreddverse? I'd be curious to read it since Dredd comes in in number 2 and it would be cool to see the issue that establishes the setting
>>87343597
Nope. Due to some production mishaps, Dredd completely missed prog (issue) 1 of 2000AD.
That said, there are two stories in that issue, FLESH and Harlem Heroes, that were later revealed to happen in the same universe sorta kinda, but they don't really affect Dredd or establish the setting and so are not required reading.
Unless you wanna read about time-travelling cowboys herding dinosaurs into the future and Harlem Globetrotters playing basketball with jetpacks.
>>87343275
>>87343526
>>87343687
Was wondering when you'd show up Judge Anon.
Just started getting into Dredd like a week ago and it's great. The cheese is great and it does transfer naturally. You should read early Dredd for stuff like the fast food wars and Judge Cal.
Havent reas much of the modern stuff, just America. Any other recomendations? I wanna see more of Judge Hershey
>>87343687
Who wouldn't want to read about those?
>>87343687
>time travelling cowboys herding dinosaurs into the future
You would have to be out of your mind to not want to read that
>>87343816
Hershey shows up in Volume 4, in The Judge Child Quest, and then appears sporadically in later volumes.
For modern stuff, I'd strongly recommend reading Origins, Tour of Duty, Day of Chaos and Trifecta. It's a wonderful set of series that segue beautifully into each other, and they'll bring you mostly up to speed with current events.
>>87343817
Losers and nonscrots, I guess.
>>87343907Does Judge anon have time for another storytime? :3
>>87343852
It was as amazing as it sounds. It always saddened me that modern especially U.S. comics didn't run with that kind of balls out insanity and variety in their stories.
Harlem Heroes was great too. 70s Blaxsploitation basketball sports opera about dudes in the future with jet packs doing kung-fu. 2000 A.D. seems batshit crazy in hindsight. But it was clearly just doing obvious things that would have got a 10 year old boy excited circa the late 70s and directly cribbing from the pop culture of the time (sci-fi, kung-fu, cowboys, wwii stories, cop shows, etc).
>>87343907
I read Child's Quest already and that was fun. I think the last thing I've read was Unamerican Graffiti.
Does the rest of modern Dredd have the same tone as America? Because that story took me by surprise
>>87343958
I dunno, do I?
>>87344028
Of course I do.
>>87344010
A bit. While it doesn't go into full Judges Are Villains territory as America, modern Dredd definitely has an undercurrent of something being fundamentally broken about the judicial system. And Dredd's attempts at fixing it without completely doing away with it is one of the strongest subplots running through the strip.
>>87344058
>>87344089
>>87344002
Harlem Heroes is a thing of beauty. And surprisingly progressive, considering it was a 70s comic with an all-black cast. Wonderful art too, dat early Gibbons.
>>87344089
>>87344114
Thanks judge anon it's 330am and the last Storytimes you did were super comfy
>>87344114
>>87344010
Imho America is the quintessential early 90s Dredd story. Things got quite philosophical as the 10 year old boys who'd grown up with the strip went into their 20s and experienced Thatcherism, the miner's strike, the crash of 87 etc. With Dredd being an outright facist then questioning the system.
It got kina goofy from the mid-90s with just
slightly dumb macho action not undifferent from what the Big Two U.S. companies were doing before settling into a well written sci-fi police procedural over the last decade and a half or so I think.
My favourite era is mid-80s Dredd and specifically the Apocalypse War. Dredd is a full on 80s style Rambo action hero but well written in comedically dark stories. It was great.
>>87344133
>>87344058
Glad Dredd isn't being played as a villain. He did seem to actually care in his own way.
>>87344152
>>87344180
>>87344166
Yeah, even when we get a story about Justice Dept. being faceless monstrous authoritarians (which is something Wagner is very fond of doing, if only to keep people from thinking having a judge system would be a good idea), Dredd himself is usually a voice of dissent towards the most horrible measures.

Anderson strikes me as basically if Saturn Girl joined the Science Police instead of the Legion.

If Judge Anon is around would you mind storytiming a comic featuring Hershey
>>87353369
Sure. Here's one of my favorites: The Not-So-Merry Wives of Windsor!
>>87353520
To be honest, as much as I love Hershey, her solo stories are kinda not very good.
>>87353569
The first few are mostly goofy done-in-one action or humor strips, which isn't bad per se, but it does mean there's not much substance or room for development there.
>>87353610
And when they did start making strips that went a bit deeper into her character, they were plagued by lousy, repetitive plots.
>>87353665
Plus, there is the slight problem that there really wasn't much to Hershey in terms of character at this point.
>>87353722
And although the writers did try to flesh her out in these stories, they mostly failed to give her any strong, unique characteristics.
>>87353797
So overall, I'm glad she got some solo stories of her own, but boy do I wish they were better.
It's not all bad, though. After all, these stories did give us Buff As Drokk Hershey.

Ulysses Farinas was the artist in IDW's Mega-City Two miniseries, which was written by Douglas Wolk. It was a pretty good story, jumbled and messy in some way but otherwise a nice visual tour de force kinda deal.

It starts off with an interesting premise (Dredd wakes up all alone in what looks like an abandoned Mega-City covered in grass), but the pacing is all over the place, Dredd's characterization is pretty terrible, and it takes an ice age to go anywhere. The art's nice and grungy, but other than that it's not really worth reading.

Nah, the story was always that Anderson wasbeing subtly influenced by a disgruntled psi perp she'd put in the cubes years ago,but the thing is that when put in context with all the soul-crushing shit she'd been through by then, killing herself seemed perfectly logical in an awful way.
>>87384622
There was actually a bit about those high heels in then chief editor Steve MacManus' memoirs. As he tells it, he'd already tried to nitpick the size of Anderson's nostrils to Bolland, who pointed out that, in real life, people's nostrils are assymetrical. So when the rest of the art came in, MacManus, not wanting to come off as an even bigger nitpicker, let it slide. Anderson did get more sensible shoes by Judge Death Lives.
>>87384622
Psi Dept has way looser regulations for pretty much everything compared to the normal Judges, IIRC. Comes with the job.

>>87385253
It's attempted (as seen in the movie) but unless you're a uber-powered alien/extra dimensional being you really don't have much of a chance before they fight back or let you realise they've been in control all along (as seen in the movie).

The suicide attempts came after this story. It was part of the build up really.
Anderson's history (part 1):
>Clariced by her dad as a young girl - kills him using her abilities; her memories of it kept hidden behind psi-blocks.
>Sent to Academy of Law: first case is baby farming. Joy.
>Brought in to scan Judge Death's remains; possessed by Death; locked up inside her own head with him for six? months.
>Death is freed, as is Anderson; she immediately gets dropped straight back into it and has to face down the Four Dark Judges on Deadworld; channels an entire city's worth of restless dead to destroy them. Probably gets a psychic power upgrade from all this.
>Minor stuff like the Apocalypse War where she assists Dredd in removing_East_Meggers in a very permanent fashion.
>Tricked into returning to Deadworld and freeing Death's clown posse. Avoids Titan trip by saving city from her own mistake.
>Unable to prevent Orlok being freed by deep-cover Sov psi agents.
>Breaks psi-block and remembers about her dear old Dad. Probably because of psychic upgrades received from Death and the Deadworld spirits.
>Best pal, the empath, commits suicide over the last whale.
>Necropolis; run over by tank confronting the Sisters; nasty spinal damage which is operated on by a cadet. Can now suck the Dark judges up into her head.
>Travels to an alternate world where the heroes and villains wear funny pyjamas to save it from Judge Death.
>>87389474
not 100% sure*
>>87389478
Anderson's history (part 2):
>Cute new guy she meets is sacrificed one story later to save world from dangerous underground monsters.
>Worried about her mental state Justice Department assigns her to work with the wonderfully named 'Judge Goon'. It ends well.
>Sent to Mars to clear her head on a mission that results in meeting Orlok again and being forced to confront herself by alien beings/tech; she tenders her resignation from Justice Dept. and fucks off into space.
>Trippy space adventures; multiple artists
>Returns in time to prevent MC1's destruction at the hands of Satan.
>Put in a coma due to another run in with Death; weird Deadworld flashbacks; freed from coma by other psi-judges; prevents another city-wide murderous rampage/catastrophe.
>Old perp subtlety starts working her over during another baby farming case; to the point where she finally commits suicide.
That's pretty much it for the major events I think...

Stories about Cass drowning... Well, The Pits would be my first guess, and that's been posted already (great story btw). Other than that, she doesn't drown, but in Dead End, the story where she offs herself, she does get a hallucination of her semi-swimming towards the light. There's also "The Trip", where she gets showered in a powerful drug that overclocks her powers. Other than that, I can't think of anything right now.

>>87393061

>>87392990
>full on chest compressions or kiss of life
Yeah, that I can tell you has never happened. The only place I've seen Anderson get a kiss of life was in one of the original drafts of the 2012 movie, and that got vetoed by John Wagner.
It's not so much that she gets CPR, but there she's been through a lot of comas and near-death experiences. Even all the way back in Four Dark Judges, her first long solo, Judge Death "killed" her but she did the old psychic ninja trick of slowing her heartbeat enough to play possum.
Then there's Half-Life, the one where she was put in a coma by Judge Death as part of a plan to unleash a psychic virus that would kill everyone in the city. That's the one where Anderson wakes from her coma, realizes Death's plan, and then wills herself back into the coma to prevent it. And then a team of psis need to go into her head to help.
And there's R*evolution, where a bizarre super-mind born from fusing a bunch of smart people's brains together sought Anderson out to add her psychic brain to his. That's the one where Anderson's astral form gets lost in a trippy jungle, with sea of blood and all.
>>87393217
>that script
>he gives her the KISS OF LIFE
Holy kek why even write it like that
They could hace done that scene but with dredd tech and not make it cheesy
>>87393313
Garland explained that it was supposed to show how much Dredd had grown to care for Anderson. The kiss was supposed to be very mechanical and unemotional, like at first you thought it was gonna be a love thing but once he started the compressions you'd realize it was all very professional and whatnot.
And then Wagner probably gave them this face and went "No."
>>87393388
I don't think it would have been THAT bad especially when there is shots like
>>87370607
In the comic
>>87393523
Way I see it, Garland may have meant it to be a cheeky response to the kiss at the end of Cannon's Judge Dredd, or a "Psych!" moment to fans who still had bad memories of that kiss. The problem is that making it all coldly mechanical and all would've been, in my opinion, too much trouble for too little gain. Especially at the climax of the story.
'sides, it's not like cutting it stopped people from writing slashfics. Giving them a kiss would only have made it worse!
