>unassuming or harmless looking character turns out to be a crucial villain
>side characters end up being more interesting than the main characters
>oldest trope in the book shows up
>"[trope]? What a cliché. If this was a cartoon that would just be lazy writing."
>>87331362
>side quests end up being more interesting than the main quests
>>87331362
This is almost always the case though, Star vs notwithstanding.
>>87331362
>the only reason the side characters have yet hijacked main character's role is due to writer's bias toward the main character
>writer tries to make the main character interesting to win fans/readers favor
>end up making the main character even less likable.
>>87331362
why does this happen every fucking show, every fucking time
also
>MC gushes over rich girl that either A: doesn't know he exist, or B: is a huge bitch
>his female best friend who is usually quite attractive, has a crush on MC
>He never notices until last season/episode
i'm so tired of this shit, either make the BFF and the MC in a relationship from the fucking start, or say they're relationship is platonic on both sides, idk, just something besides this shit.
>>87332095
pretty much most of animes have those things, only different in degrees.
>>87332095
>show has main character shifting between love interests
>shows them going on dates
>>87332095
>MC gushing over rich bitch
>Turns out she's actually a pretty cool dude once you get through to her
>MC treats her like shit because he's subconsciously into female best friend
>Breaks rich bitch's heart
Fucking Spectacular Spider-man
>>87331148
>character has to do something for a friend
>fucks shit up
>"It's perfect/I love it!"
>show is big on redemption and the power of love and friendship
>a villain shows up that just says "Fuck That" and continues being evil
>>87331362
>>87331755
Funny enough, that was the entire impetus for Suikoden. The main writer of the first few games came up with it because he loved stuff like FotNS and Captain Tsubasa that had large casts and thought the side characters were more interesting than the main characters. So he decided to pitch a game with a cast of mostly side characters.
>>87332874
And it worked out great.
>>87332874
>>87332911
don't forget the romance of three kingdoms. Many of side characters turn out to be as interesting, if not better than the main characters.
>>87332095
You're missing the point. Swap the genders in your example and you'll see what the writers are actually aiming for.
>>87332826
/co/ would hate it and call it edgy shit.
>>87333441
Water Margin actually, and I think the idea of basing it on that (mainly the 108 Stars) came from someone else.
>>87332717
Love this one. What are some examples?
>>87332095
I love how clone high made fun of this.
>New bad guy that's even badder than the regular villain is about to beat the hero
>Regular villain actually fights the new bad guy
>"If anyone's gonna kick your ass, it's gonna be me"
>>87333569
I've never heard anyone call Wander over Yander edgy.
>>87335445
You beat me to it anon.
>>87331362
This is why I hate The Amazing World of Gumball.
The characters outside the family are actually fun, but they just love to give us the dysfunctional family for 10 episodes a season.
>>87336578
They did a good handful of episodes focusing on the world or a side character though
I mean, yeah, Gumball and Darwin are still there, but why wouldn't they be?
>>87333889
I like how Clone High made fun of it but it still hurt because it got fucking cancelled.
>"We're not so different you and I"
>>87332826are you talking about jaspercause that's literally what jasper did
>>87331362
can someone explain why this shit keeps happening
like not just in cartoons, but everything now a days, video games, tv shows, movies, the like. Can we as a whole just not write interesting MCs anymore, like to the point where they can only be interesting when alone/without side characters?
>>87331362
It's just like my 2hus!
>>87336901
Less is more
You're much more interested in the mysterious new side character than the protagonist you've gotten to know inside and out already
>>87336852
I hadChrysalisin mind actually, but Jasper, Dominator and Frieza are also applicable.
>redhead is always the best character in any series
>>87337095
Nah, in touhou nobody is interesting.
>Girl with blonde hair is the good character
>Girl with black hair is the Evil\Bitch character.
>Its a Racoon\Rat\Bat
>Everyone runs away from it like its the goddamn plague
Fuck you rabies.
>>87331148
That's real life.
>>87337409
That's not girl with biggest tits.
>>87337761
>2016
>not the opposite
>>87332559
fuck man you triggered my spectacular spiderman ptsd ;__;
>>87336578
Especially Carrie and Rob the cyclop, they are awesome.
>>87337095
delet this
>>87337546
>in touhou nobody is interesting.
>>87338097
Touhou characters get like 4 sentences of dialogue per game. Everything else is fanfiction.
>>87338162
well there is the official doujin
>>87337280
>spoiler
That sounds too good to be true.
>>87338057
more! MORE!
>>87332095
>why does this always happen
The protagonist is meant to appeal to the widest variety of people. The side characters are meant to appeal more to a certain type of person. You're the kind of person the side character was meant to please so you like it more than you do the protagonist.
Marketing rules us all.
>>87338251
But it did happen
She might get one later, but I secretly hope that it isn''t the main characters that do it and that the next time she comes back she's reformed due to offscreen events.
>>87338288
>wanting her to be reformed at all
Fuck this shit.
>>87338312
She's top tier waifu, man. Why you hatin'?
Besides, they've already killed like 2 major villains.
>we must stop the badguy from getting the mcguffin or he'll be unstoppable
>>87338393
Is that fucking Road Rovers? That shitty HotWheels X TMNT cartoon?
>>87338400
It wasn't that good but it definitely wasn't shitty, the Hell is your problem?
>>87338373
Why do you want her reformed? You might as well kill her, that's practically what you'd be doing.
>something wrong with a character
>MC and others shrink down and go inside said characters body
>>87338057
This pic just gave me a flashback to being a kid and finding Major Doctor Ghastly to be incredibly hot.
>tfw she made your pee pee tingle and you didn't even know how to fap
>>87331148
>it's a feminism episode
No, I don't care about feminism, I want to see colorful characters go on adventures and vicariously enjoy myself. If I wanted stupid gender politics I'd go to /pol/ or Tumblr.
>>87332657
Fucking Legend of Korra, amiright?
>>87335427
A powerful trope that must be used with discretion. It always produces the most rabid of shippers. Like Kim/Shego, Wright/Edgeworth, and pic related.
>>87331148
>overly happy character in an adult cartoon
>turns out he's just genuinely learned how to be happy and isn't hiding behind some veil
>character's bisexual
>doesn't exist
>"I have a plan!"
>they immediately start accomplishing the problem without even hearing the plan.
>>87342807
>character who the MCs all knew back in the day returns
>apparently had some falling out with him in the past that ended with him swearing revenge on the MCs
>says he's changed
>saves one of the younger MC's life
>a few episodes later
>literally stabs MC in the back
Fucking Magnus
>>87332095
Thank you for ruining my day by making me remember pic related.
>>87332826
Fim basically copied the ending from WOY
>>87342096
Mr Peanutbutter?
>>87342910
Is that ant okay
>>87343658
that's what i was thinking of, but there's some other i'm forgetting.
it's just refreshing to me.
>If we kill the villain we'll be just like him
No you won't! He's the villain! He probably killed shittons of people or was going to kill shittons more!
>>87332095
Not /co/, but this fucking show. Loved it except Ned being denser than a neutron star.
>>87331148
>ridiculous or silly B plot ends up solving the serious drama of the A plot
when fry drinks 100 cups of coffee, god damn
>character is an asshole and an unlikable jerk
>after five seasons of character growth he is the best and most upstanding character in the story
>>87343634
Fim?
>>87331826
Has there ever been an example of "natural progression", for a lack of a better word. What I mean is, changing MCs. Like in your example, if the writers weren't biased and the former side char becomes the new main char. Which is also not put in stone, but dynamic.
>another tropes thread
finally
>>87338187
>official doujin
>official
>doujin
No.
>>87344163
>old West setting
>sheriff/marshal/lawman does something that's technically illegal but ends up catching the bad guy and talks about the sprit of the law vs the letter of the law.
