Is it any good?
Yeah.
Is what any good?
>>87330173
I never did finish reading 8-bit theater.
>>87330173
It's without question the best game related webcomic
Im glad the writer got a real job as a comic author though. Atomic Robo is good
>>87330435
I always forgot that he wrote those.
>>87330173
It's only good if you enjoy some of the greatest humor in webcomic history.
That nine-year joke setup.
I really liked that short Avengers run that Clevinger did. Has he done anything else for Marvel since, or just strictly Atomic Robo?
>>87330618
Which one was that?
>>87330709Four White Mages.
>>87330173
The story is good. Plus the artstyle is just sprites most of the time so there's no complaint there.
>>87330727
It's been ages since I read it, explain further and I'll probably remember.I remember the four white mages showing up, but aside from that, what happened? Or is it just a joke for the 4 White Mage party that you could make in FF1?
>>87330912At the very beginning of the comic, Black Mage is reading the Final Fantasy 1 Strategy Guide, and says 'Four White Mages? It'll never work...' Then at the very end, nine years later, Chaos is stopped by WM's Four White Mage party, and BM picks up his guide again and looks at it and goes 'oh goddamnit'.
>>87330173
one of those rare webcomics that actually got better as it went along
>>87330993
the guide that came with the game in NA actually suggests that line up.
>>87330618
The entire comic is worth it for that one joke.
>>87330618
There was also that one setup for the conversation that happened years later. This comic had some good shit.
>>87330173
Did Ash from Slipshine draw this?

>the guy who did 8-bit Theater did Atomic Robo
How did I never know this?
This finally gives me the motivation to read8-bit Theater
>>87330173
Pretty damn good. Even dumped all of it on /vg/ last year.
8-bit theater has a similar humor to early Homestuck. A lot of is based on subversion of reader expectations. That said, the beginning can be rough to get into. Bear in mind that the first 8-bit Theater was publish more than 15 years ago on a fledgling internet, when the mere concept of a webcomic was novel. As a whole, it still holds up today, but doesn't really find its legs until a couple of hundred strips in.
>>87332111
You'll probably have the exact opposite problem everyone else has where Black Mage kinda leaks in to Robo; You'll probably hear a lot of Robo in Black Mage.
>>87330173
It runs on the shittiest, oldest comic gag in the book.
The snarky smart guy is amazed at how dumb the retard is.
And from what I see it never lets up.
>>87333673
Tell me about it, the whole "survivor" arc was fucking horrible.
>>87332111
you got like a 1000 strips to get through so get cracking buddy.
I really wish Square would green light a physical hardbound copy
>>87334699
>oldest comic gag in the book.
See here's the thing about that. It pretty much WROTE the book. You're not wrong but it's like calling Lord of the Rings generic.
This is ground floor internet humor
>>87335004
Fucking this. It's greatest problem was being so good that everyone had to try and follow in it's foot steps.
I'm not sure who started the whole trend of roommates with an morally ambiguous genius, idiot, straight man/author voice, and sentient animal/appliance but I know they need to go die in a fire.
>>87335004
>It pretty much WROTE the book
Considering its been an awful concept since the early 90's, no.
It may have inspired every fucktard that its "quality humor" but it sure as hell didn't invent it.
>>87330596
Fuck it, I'm kekking. 8-bit is legitimately the Douglas Adams of comics
speaking of Final Fantasy reference humor, whatever happened to legendary frog
>>87334699
>8-bit theater
>smart guy
Now YOU'RE the dumb retard, because none of the characters in 8-bit theater can be described as "smart". It's an absurdist world and every character is on a different level of insane and/or retarded.
>>87335748
Fighter's a genius, I don't know what comic you've been reading.
Someone post Sword-Chucks already.
>>87335809
>>87335303
You're thinking of Sluggy Freelance.
>>87335664
>legendary frog
Heard he got addicted to WoW way back then.
>>87335748
Well, except for Left Hand Gary and Princess Sara, but they're basically helpless in the face of the sheer ineptitude and casual cruelty of King Steve
>>87335004
>>87335367
>thinking this started with the internet
>ignoring this has been a style of japanese comedy (manzai) since the 8th century
"Straight man, funny guy" is literally older than most civilizations
>>87336242
>manzai
>not unga n chuga
get off 4cave weeb
>>87336272
I refuse, this is OUR Mongolian cave painting enthusiast forum
>>87335664
He got married and had a kid
>>87336242
"Straight man, funny guy" is literally older than written and oral human history.
>>87335844
fighter is a national treasure
>>87336374
Well that part we can't prove because there's nothing to support it
>>87336242
>implying manzai started it
>>87336442
It's the oldest notable one that you can find plenty of written stuff on it, but obviously a whole comedy style doesn't come out of thin air.
>>87336384
It probably came about from proto-humans picking on the tribe idiot/pariah for shits and giggles.
>>87336079
Left Hand Man Gary was dead inside for a long time, he's just riding the wave
8 bit should always be the first webcomic one should read.
>>87337407
see what I like about this is Clevenger knows how to write a wacky random character. It's not just about throwing out whatever non sequitur you can think of at the time, there's an internal logic to everyone's actions. Even King Steve makes sense to King Steve
actually looking back Clevenger had a DARK sense of humor. Hilarious but he really uh PG'd the fuck up when he went professional
>>87330173
It's a slow starter, try not to be turned off by the Simpsons refrences and occasional bad video game jokes typical of webcomics that fill the early strips because it really does come into it's own. There is comedy gold in there.
Just don't be one of those whackjobs who reads it for thje _story_, good god people used to argue about 8-bit CANON.
Posting a random strip without reading it first, don't blame me if it ain't a good one.
>>87331039
Are you sure? If it's the one that came from/was printed by nintendo power, they make no mention of suggested party compositions, I just checked mine.
>>87337831
As a kid I used to be really upset that 8 Bit Theater ended the way it did.
Nowadays... I still don't think it's great but it's fine at least. I feel like you can only anti-climax so much before it stops being fun.
>>87337895
>As a kid I used to be really upset that 8 Bit Theater ended the way it did.
2009?
>>87337815
Those King Steve Theatre's were actually written by a mate of Brian's who ended up killing himself. What you thought was dark just got darker. m8.
>>87337732
Man, I really should reread this thing sometime.
>>87337935
>Those King Steve Theatre's were actually written by a mate of Brian's who ended up killing himself.
Wait, really? Goddamn.
This was always rife with good one liners.
>if I was to describe the length of a line between you and the nearest good idea, it would be a line too big to fit into the observable universe
or something.
>>87338051
I still use the word omniloath
>>87337905

Was seven years ago.
