Wow this show somehow looks cheaper than the loud house.

This show has the production values of a fake cartoon that you might see in the background of another cartoon.

These character designs look like what you would get if you fed google's AI the results of a million focus tests and instructed it not to try too hard.

They're so generic I can not believe any actual artists were involved in a single step of this show's production.

The background is EXTREMELY cheap CGI. They couldn't even be fucked to draw a brick texture, they just stamped a bunch of misaligned bricks on a flat wall and called it a day. You can fucking see the places where the default block primitives overlap because zero effort was put in to make it look even passable. Everyone in the background is clearly just a copy-pasted reusable object with no thought put into them.

Because they didn't draw him at all. He's walking towards the camera yet you see him perfectly straight on even though he's not in the middle of the frame. The only part of him that uses any actual non-canned animation loops is his legs and they're a total shit show. That is not the way a foot attaches to a leg. That is the way a child thinks it works. What a coincidence this looks exactly how you would expect it to if the artist was an untrained low-skill sweatshop laborer.

Pick up a fucking copy of the Animator's Survival Kit you uneducated, impossibly plebeian shit lord. You are the reason studios think they can get away with shoveling minimum effort shit on the air and you are the reason they're right.

There is ZERO effort involved in this entire scene. That is why I say there were no artists involved, not just because it's painfully generic, but because with artists you typically get some trace of artistry.

Plenty of cartoons have no real conflict, though, granted a lot of those, not counting slice of life animu, are for younger audiences, which is kind of the same audience they were aiming at doing Phineas and Ferb in the past, but even that had more of a real conflict than this. I don't see lack of conflict as a bad idea in a cartoon if the show was meant from the start not to have any, there is stuff like Moomin and Rupert Bear which are very down to earth with no conflict. Unless the writers plan to raise the stakes in the story arcs they promise on Twitter, I don't see why would anyone hold it against their show when it never marketed and sold itself as a serious and action cartoon. I can see when we use the words safe and inoffensive as a strike against a cartoon but like I say, even cartoons without a conflict have their audience and niche. So it feels silly to look down on a show that had no pretension of being more than it was already established to be from the pilot. But who knows, maybe the story arcs will make the show better. I don't feel it will get any deeper, but let's hope the staff knows what they are doing while you learn of their plans.

The more I look at this particular scene the more there is to be pissed about. I mean they clearly don't employ any animators but do they really also have no storyboarders to set up some basic blocking? They manage to somehow have too much going on in one shot while still feeling awkwardly empty. It's the kind of bad that would be impossible to do on purpose.

Generally speaking the purpose of an intro is to serve as a quick snapshot of the show. Now for the record I'm not saying Milo Murphy's Law has a good intro, it is pretty meh aside from the song.

I want to be completely clear. This is not a matter of taste. This is not an opinion.

This show is abysmally animated. Animation has rules. Cinematography exists. It is possible to do it wrong. I could go through one of the episodes and explain to you in every second something they are doing blatantly wrong, objectively wrong, but nobody cares THAT much.

But I can give you just a few seconds that I think are a good representative sample of recurring problems. In the second video at 8:12 where they run up a ramp and then just float off it to the I-beam. This keeps happening. Nothing moves with any sense of weight. It all just slides from one side of the screen to the next at a constant speed like they didn't even bother clicking "ease-in-out" when auto tweening half the fucking show away. Huge concrete pipes move with all the force of a pillow flung across an ice rink.

Let's move on to one second later 8:13. Not a lot happens here but they do have to manage some pretty dramatic motions. Main character jumps up, turns around, pulls other character up, turns around again and they both start running. This was all in one second. This really compounds the problem of nothing feeling like it has any weight. Each of those motions had 2 if not 1 frame of actual animation dedicated to it. You can't move naturally like that so everything just ends up feeling stiff. This is the second of the big recurring problems. Because nothing is animated by hand and everything is just a string of pre-canned animation clips there is no squash and stretch, no build up and follow-through, and certainly no smears which is how an actual animator would handle something moving that fast. Instead you have a jerky paper doll rattling around for a second with no time to communicate anything at all.

8:14, and I'm actually about to hit my 2000 character limit. Here's the problem here real quick. They go from full stop to full speed in a single frame. This is just not animation...

As an animator I can tell you that doing that correctly would hardly take more than a few minutes no matter what software they are using. If they were short on time then cut it. I'm not here to criticize the story but the whole scene of running from the water starts nowhere, ends nowhere, accomplishes nothing in between.

Now, I know I haven't said enough to make my full point but I'm sure you're tired of me anyway. In addition to explaining why this show is bad I would also have to explain what doing it right would look like and that would be a whole lesson in animation. Suffice it to say there's a long list of tools that animators have at their disposal to solve every one of these problems. I mentioned smearing but that wouldn't solve the problem of weight. As just one example watch this gif a few times and then keep reading.

Did you notice after a few loops that there's a frame missing? You probably didn't and that's the point. Removing the last frame before impacting the ground and replacing the frame before with a smear of those two is imperceptible but makes the impact feel a lot stronger. Contrast this to the two kids moving at a steady pace and floating from the construction site to the crane arm like a pair of flying squirrels and you may now be capable of articulating the problem that you probably noticed but didn't notice you noticed. As in, the scene felt worse for everything it did wrong but without the tools to recognize it you have no way of knowing it could be any better.

I hope I've helped you realize you could be demanding better. You could be demanding more Wander Over Yonder if only you knew what you were missing.

This was everything I noticed in 3 seconds of this show. You thought I could talk a lot about a single frame, and I could actually I could keep going on that fucking frame, but this is still just 3 seconds.

The entire show is this bad. It's a mess. It is a fucking disaster. I'm not just saying "I don't like thing and you shouldn't either!" I'm just letting you know "Hey, these are just some of the problems, now you tell me if you can still honestly defend this animation."

You can fall back into your "I was just trolling the whole time" act, and by the way congratulations on being the first person ever to do that. But I hope you also read some of it. Despite the obvious danger every one is in, Milo has little emotional currency wrapped up in other peoples physical safety. It's like he is sure that in the end all will be well.

You might think that he can see the future but its clear that he is often surprised and enjoys their quirky nature. This suggests experiences the day to day in real time.

I suggest that what we see in each episode is the final successful run through of a series of failed days lived by Milo to keep every one safe from harm. Some days are relatively uneventful and he can enjoy the weirdness of his existence. Others are very difficult requiring many run throughs, memorizing an exact sequence of events needed to keep some one from getting killed.

The show is so meh.

The actors are pretty horrible, but maybe that's not their fault because typically Weird Al is pretty good and he's terrible in this. So it's gotta be the direction.

The writing is stilted, the jokes are poorly-timed, the sound mixing is bad, the plots aren't cohesive, the gags are all derivative, the characters are uninspired (other than the glasses dude who's horny for Melissa), and in general the show doesn't feel like a TV show so much as an expose on Milo's life. "What would happen if everything went wrong always?"

But the direction is really the thing holding it back.

It's two facial characteristics they gave Sara that look odd with this style: sharp cheekbones and the lower eyelid curving upward when she squints.

Teen Titans Go is a great show. It's cute, funny, full of weird characters and villains, etc. It's silly fun. Milo is just interesting. That's it. There's nothing to be fully invested in. There's nothing going on.

Funny, tomorrow morning Disney Channel and Disney XD will be showing Rooting For The Enemy, but XD pairs it with Sunny Side Up while Channel pairs it with The Undergrounders.

Disney Channel's west feed, which I also have, airs that 3 hours later at 12 PM, the same time XD airs the episode.
