Heathcliff and friends hang out with the Cat in the Hat.

WHERE'S THE JOKE HEATHCLIFF
WHERE IS IT

ha ha, you see, the cat in the hat is sort of abstracted out in our cultural consciousness as his own entity but he is, in fact, a cat
and cats go out to steal garbage, but he's a celebrity cat so all the regular cats gather around him
how delightfully absurd!

I kind of want to see Scott McCloud write Understanding Heathcliff. Maybe he can also get Kurt Busiek for assist.

This one actually makes sense though.
It's poking fun at how notoriously unstable the lives and careers of celebrities (in this case, musicians) are. Every new superstar is just another Humpty Dumpty about to fall off the edge.
Is Heathcliff post-humor?

It's kind of funny when you explain it. Is Heathcliff some sort of anti-joke?

Heathcliff is just full of subtler, higher-level humor than you find in your average newspaper comic is all.

>Is Heathcliff some sort of anti-joke?
No, it's a regular comic, but where the joke should be lies only an abyss. Staring into the abyss leads you to a new layer, but in that new layer, there is yet another abyss where the joke should be. And it keeps going on
Other times it's just a comic about an orange cat that gets up to antics with no depth to it whatsoever and just a mediocre joke or reference to an older comic (because deepest lore).
By alternating between the two modes, Gallagher keeps you on your feet and keeps you wondering "is there a joke I'm not getting?" because sometimes yes, there actually is a joke you're not getting. That joke isyou.

So...Dr. Seuss stories are canon to Heathcliff? How deep does this rabbit hole go?
Is Heathcliff the St. Elsewhere of /co/? Is the final strip going to have an alzheimer's-stricken Grandpa Nutmeg blankly staring into a snowglobe where a bunch of cats dance around an ape?

It's interesting that so many celebrities show up for garbage night in Heathcliff's neighborhood.
