In-depth synopsis of the movie script for The Flash that was written in 2011 by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim. Back then, "Green Lantern" was supposed to launch a DC Cinematic Universe and was supposed to carry it alongside The Flash since Batman and Superman weren't available upfront.

After "Green Lantern" flopped and Warner pulled the plug on the whole thing, Berlanti revised his treatment with Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns and created the hit TV shows airing on the CW, and it's actually pretty interesting how they're so similar yet so different.

CENTRAL CITY.

Barry Allen is speeding through the city, helping people in need. While preventing muggings and accidents, he observes the Phase Lightning, a rare phenomenon notorious to the "Gem Cities", Central City and Keystone City, before an explosion leads him to a derelict building filled with squatters. As Barry cases the building in search of people being trapped, he realizes he's been lured into a trap and notices someone observing him from the flames as the floor collapses beneath him.

TWO WEEKS EARLIER.

Barry visits the mother of a young murder victim whose case was closed and assures her he'll find the culprint, before being called to a crime scene at the bank of the river that divides the Gem Cities. A young woman has been found dead with no evidence of struggle, the latest of a series of murders that the police has been covering up at the behest of city hall. Barry arrives late and is mocked by the other policemen and reprimanded by Captain Fred Chyre, who chastises Barry to wasting time on cold cases. Central City is a broken city with rampant crime and corruption and the country's highest count of unsolved murders. Barry defends that the families of the victims deserve justice, which Chyre relates to Barry's childhood.

Barry then arrives late for dinner with his childhood friend Iris West. She has recently been fired from the Central City Citizen for writing an exposé on a crooked city councilman and decides to write a blog. Barry confides in Iris about his problems with the case and she demurs on telling him something.
At the crime lab, Barry studies the body and theorizes that the victim died from exposure to extremely low temperatures, and requests a mass spectometer analysis for confirmation, but Chyre dismisses him. Barry presses him, voicing his suspicions that there's a serial killer on the loose, but Chyre shuts him down, telling him he'll be facing suspension if he goes public about it and spreads unwarranted panic.

Barry remembers his childhood, when his mother, Nora Allen, bought him a comic book featuring Jay Garrick, also known as "The Flash", advising him that the best way to solve a problem is to approach it from a different perspective, just as they drove by S.T.A.R. Labs, a renowed technology research center.

Barry infiltrates S.T.A.R. Labs with a school tour, hoping to gain access to their mass spectometer, but is caught by one of the employees, bioengineer Valerie Perez. He asks for for help, but she demands that he leave. Feeling bad for him, though, Valerie takes the samples Barry has collected from numerous cold cases that he believes are connected and promises to get back in touch with Barry with answers.

Barry rushes back to Iris' home and is surprised to find the West family celebrating Iris' engagement with a succesful banker, Nathan Newbury. Iris' young nephew, Wally West, comments on how Barry seems upset before being sent to bed by his mother, Mary. Barry grew up with the Wests after a traumatic incident in his childhood, and Mary reveals that the entire family expected Barry and Iris to end up together, but Barry was too slow. Barry prepares to leave when Iris catches up to him. They regretfully exchange pleasantries and Barry leaves.

Barry returns home, where he has set up a makeshift laboratory, to find that Valerie has sent him the processed samples. A rainstorm blows the window open and Barry is struck by lightning and doused in chemical products.

The moment the lightning hits, Barry's life flashes before his eyes: His childhood alongside Iris, his father Henry losing his job at the local steel mill, the increasing tensions between Henry and Nora, and the fateful night where Barry heard screaming and was suddenly whisked several blocks away by a gust of wind, returning home to find his mother dead from a fatal stab wound and his blood-soaked father being led away by the police.

Chyre is the arresting officer and he comforts Barry as he craddles his mother's dead body. Chyre then becomes a surrogate father for Barry, helping him throughout the investigation, his father's incarceration and subsequent death in prison, and helping Barry become a CSI so he could prevent other families from suffering the same pain he suffered.

Barry is rushed to the hospital as he begins developing superspeed. He is later visited at the hospital by Eobard Thawne, a renowed wheelchair-bound scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs. Thawne has heard about Barry's accident and was fascinated by his miraculous survival, offering to help Barry understand what is happening.

Barry accompanies Thawne to S.T.A.R. Labs, where he reunites with Valerie, Thawne's assistant, and meets her co-workers, Dr. Jerry McGee and Dr. Murray Takamoto. Thawne reveals that the mixture of lightning and chemicals has altered Barry's body chemistry, affording him superhuman speed, and that his team wants to conduct tests on Barry to find out the extent of his abilities

Under Thawne's supervision, Barry tests his limits by outracing a dragster, clearing a canyon in a matter of minutes and unraveling a tornado by running counter to its spin. Valerie, Jerry and Murray create special shoes that can withstand his velocity and begin developing a friction-resistant suit. Inspired by his childhood hero, the Flash, Barry begins preventing crimes, leading to the events in which he's nearly killed after being lured into a trap at the burning building.
Thawne chastises Barry for his recklessness, claiming that by mapping out Barry's DNA and reproducing his abilities they can help far more people than by performing heroics. Thawne then shows Barry his greatest creation: An unfinished particle accelerator through which Thawne believes he can open breaches through the space-time continuum, reaching alternative timelines that function as parallel universes divided by different vibration frequencies.

Barry analyzes the data that Valerie got him and finds compelling evidence a serial killer is on the loose that murders his victims by injecting them with a chemical cocktail that "freezes" them from the inside out. Chyre goes public with the information, while Barry ropes Valerie, Murray and Jerry into helping him investigate further without Thawne's knowledge. Barry shares his discoveries with Iris, who is also investigating the strange murders for her blog.

Chyre is kidnapped and executed on live television by the serial killer, who then announces a public landmark will be destroyed in five days. The S.T.A.R. Labs team identifies him as Leonard "Cold" Snart, a wanted criminal with an aversion to warmth, who was institutionalized at a psychiatric hospital as a child after accidentally burning down his house and killing his entire family.

Barry and Iris work together to find Chyre and identify a pattern in the murders they've attributed to Cold, indicating he's targeting the Central City train station. Barry confronts Cold as he's planting a bomb and disables it. Cold then sabotages a train in order to escape. Barry evacuates the passengers as the train is derailing, saving hundreds of lives.

Returning to S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry is celebrated by Valerie, Murray and Jerry, who reveal they've made his friction-resistant suit into a superhero uniform modeled after Jay Garrick's comic book costume without Thawne's knowledge. Barry asks for their help to figure out who Cold might target next.

Barry meets Iris and Nathan for dinner, where she tells them she acquired the surveillance footage of the train station incident and has found evidence there was a man inside the "tornado" that seemingly saved the train. She links it to reports of Barry's earlier crimefighting antics and announces Central City has a "guardian angel". Fearing for her safety, Barry acts dismissive, and the two have a brief argument.

Barry later meets Valerie, Murray and Jerry for drinks at a bar and he and Valerie kiss just as Iris and Nathan pass by, and Iris becomes jealous. Barry and Valerie end up having sex, but Valerie quickly realizes Barry is in love with Iris. He apologizes, and she parts.

Iris visits Barry the following day to continue their investigation into Cold and determine that he is not a serial killer, but a hitman targeting a specific targets. Iris leaves for dinner with Nathan just as S.T.A.R. Labs gets in contact with Barry and warns him Nathan is Cold's next target. Barry speeds to the restaurant just as Nathan and Iris are attacked. Nathan is injected and Iris is nearly killed before Barry intervenes and overpowers Cold. He introduces himself to Iris as "The Flash" and gives the paramedics a set of handwritten instructions on how to treat Nathan. Barry then leaves Cold at the police station.

The following day, Iris visits Barry at his apartment and addresses him as The Flash, revealing she recognized his handwritting. Barry confides with her about his accident and she is thriller to find out he's the guardian angel she's been writing about. At the police station, Barry interrogates Cold, who refuses to answer. Suddenly, the lights go out, and Cold declares "he's come for me". Suddenly, a black-clad speedster bursts into the room and confronts Barry. Barry recognizes him as the gust of wind that took him away from home, and the man who murdered his mother. The mysterious speedster confirms and brutally beats down Barry, urging him to "stop running" or his loved ones will be hurt before disappearing in the night.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Iris visits a recovering Nathan and inquires him about why Cold was after him. Nathan regretfully reveals he laundered money for several of Cold's victims, but withheld from the police that they were connected to protect his own career. Iris is disappointed and breaks off her engament to Nathan, urging him to do the right thing and tell him where the laundered money was coming from. Nathan reveals it traces back to S.T.A.R. Labs.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Valerie accesses Thawne's research on Barry's speed and finds out the particle accelerator is already functional and has a secret purpose: Harnessing Barry's speed. Thawne arrives in the room, congratulating Valerie on her resourcefulness before standing up and snapping her neck.

Iris tells Barry about S.T.A.R. Labs' involvement with Cold and they head there to find Valerie dead. Barry deduces that the dark speedster is responsible and is reluctant to endanger Iris and the others by going after him, but Iris tells him he's always been a hero at heart and can't deny that now that fate has given him the power to help the innocent.

Thawne attacks Iron Heights Penitentiary, freeing all the inmates, and plants bombs throughout the city to distract Barry while he activates the particle accelerator. The Flash springs to action, assisting the police in recapturing the prisoners and disabling the bombs in the nick of time, but while he's away, Iris is kidnapped by Cold and taken back to S.T.A.R. Labs. Barry arrives there to learn that Thawne is the dark speedster.

Thawne reveals that he comes from a future in which Barry is one of the world's greatest heroes, Iris is his wife and they have twin children. In that future, Thawne is Barry's nemesis, the Reverse Flash, who harnesses the Speed Force that gives Barry his powers into Negative Speed Force. In a fit of rage following his latest defeat, Thawne travelled back in time to kill Nora and frame Henry in order to break young Barry, succesfully preventing him from becoming the Flash and creating a splinter timeline.

However, he had exhausted his powers by performing a time jump and became trapped centuries into the past, leaving him no other option but the infiltrate S.T.A.R. Labs to build a particle accelerator and facilitate the events that led to Barry becoming the Flash

Thawne's plan is to use Barry's speed to power the particle accelerator and open a breach to his original timeline so he can return home, in the process destroying the splinter timeline where they're residing and wiping out billions of innocent lives. Thawne activates the machine, which is powered by the energy Barry produced by recapturing the inmates and disabling the bombs, and it opens a singularity that begins consuming Central City.

Iris escapes, and Cold attempts to kill her with a cold needle, but Barry backhands it into Cold's chest, and he dies feeling "warm". Barry then defeats Thawne in battle and unravels the singularity by running counter to its flow, saving the world. Thawne attacks Barry and the two have a vicious fight, in which Barry breaks the lightspeed barrier and ventures into the Speed Force, which functions as a nexus between all the timelines/realities.

Thawne is consumed by the Speed Force and vanishes, and Barry nearly experiences the same before Iris' voice leads him back. Before leaving, he catches a brief glimpse of Thawne's timeline, in which his parents are alive, know his secret and are proud of his accomplishments.

Barry finally returns to the ruins of S.T.A.R. Labs and reunites with Iris. They kiss and profess their love for each other. Barry embraces his role as the Flash, vowing to protect the world, and leaves to rebuild the damage that the singularity has inflicted upon Central City. Iris writes an article introducing the Flash to the world, which goes viral, and the people of Central City cheer as they see the red streak tearing through the city.

In an after-credits scene, Barry arrives at a bank where a robbery is in process to find that the criminals have already been dealt with Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who compliments Barry on his speed.

Berlanti himself was slated to direct the movie. He had previously been linked to "Green Lantern", but dropped out because as a novice director WB didn't feel up to the task of handling a CGI-heavy Hollywood blockbuster.

As for the cast, WB had extended offers to Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds to play Barry. Both were shortlisted for Hal Jordan before Pine declined since he felt the role was too similar to James T. Kirk and Cooper got passed over in favor of Ryan Reynolds, who was more famous at the time. Pine was apparently WB's top choice before the whole thing came crashing down.
