Jack Chick has died. F
one of the greats
>>87198642
Good riddance.
>>87198642
Good.
b-bakana!
F
Source? And what's his real name?
I bet he was assassinated by Opus Dei.
This is his best work.
F
He also had /co/ opinions
Never liked him, and I am pretty much a fundie. He did zero research on the topics he made comics about and generally hurt Christianitys image more than help.

It depends on which fundamentals you believe in.
Personally I draw the line at stuff like "independent baptist", KJV only, Christian Identity, etc.
B-but who will tell us why we should give our souls to Darkseid?
>>87198742
>and I am pretty much a fundie
What on earth are you doing on 4chan?
Rest in peace. You were a fucking lunatic but I laughed at your bullshit. Amen.

Bummer. I don't think anybody believed in the power of comics more than Jack.

PERSONA 3
>>87199164
I apologize in advance for the shitty MSPaint coloring job done here, even Chick's crummy art looks better in B&W, and I could've sworn I read this in B&W waaaaay back when. Ah well, c'iest la vive!
>>87199174
Persona 3 FES was dope. I bet Chick loved Persona. He was real classy, probably liked 2 the best.
R.I.P.
>>87198734
he died before he could warn us of the evils of gay space rocks (probably not pop culture enough to cross his radar though)
>>87199203
Not buying it until I see source.
>>87199233
I love how in Chick's worldview, nobody can be hit by a car just because - they're hit by a car because it was driven by a couple trapped in a loveless, and presumably, GODLESS marriage.

>>87199362
...yes, anon. Jack Chick REALLY wrote a Chick tract declaring his whole life's work and personal beliefs to be heretical. No you nincompoop, it's a PARODY albeit one made just by replacing the text. In its original form, the guy who died was a random Catholic, hence the priest giving him last rites. Catholics were behind everything from the Nazis to same-sex marriage to Godspell according to Chick.
>>87199316

I'm not saying Archie wasn't fundie, I'm just saying the Archie of today isn't the same as the Archie of yesterday.

>>87199569
Before the Fundie Archie comics came to be, Hartley had the habit of sticking in the most blatant Christian messages ever seen in a Comics Code-approved comic. It got so bad that Goldwater (can't remember which one) basically told Hartley to cut the crap.
>>87199587

To be fair, BEFORE Hartley took over, they were actually pretty raunchy, sexualizing teens and even publishing a pretty grisly horror comic with the Riverdale gang. So modern day Archie is actually a return to the publisher's roots.

I once got a book called "What's A Christian To Do About Harry Potter?" from my local library, cause I wanted a good chuckle. To my disappointment, it turned out to be perfectly reasonable and pointed out how Harry and his pals are great role models... and theeeeen it mentioned in the last chapter how little devils are constantly tempting us all to sin, and had "To anybody who laughs at this... WHAT IF WE'RE RIGHT?" as a footnote.

Depends on who you ask.
Generally it is because Jesus' sacrifice for us was necessary to bridge the gap once and for all between God and humanity. Jesus, as fully human and fully divine, gives himself as the sacrificial lamb (a necessary sacrificial offering in temple worship to atone for sins). We recreate this sacrifice each Mass with the Eucharist, and the sacrament of that in combination with Penance, affords us the grace to be forgiven of sins and become more like Christ in practice and intent.

I don't really know myself but I've always thought it was kinda like when the Beyonder gave up his awesome power to live as a regular dude for a while. And then he got potty trained by Spider Man. The Father, the Son, and the Holy spirit are all God, but they're distinct from each other. Like different aspects of one totality. God incarnated in the form of a man so he could suffer and die as men often did. To walk a mile in our shoes, if you will. I'm not sure if this is accurate or heresy most foul so don't take my word for it.
>>87201431
That's why certain theological arguments are always going to have an element of mystery to them.
Humanity is made in the image of God (explicitly so), so it is reasonable to conclude that some aspects of humanity are reflections of God's perfected nature itself. But we cannot know God's exact nature and being because we are limited and mortal, whereas God is infinite and immortal.

Exactly, he's unknowably infinite, omniscient, and omnipotent, so going about the salvation of mankind like he apparently did just seems needlessly roundabout and convoluted. I see why he would want free will, but there has to have been some better way to accomplish the salvation of mankind for those willing to accept it than what happened.

>People should be allowed to do whatever they want without consequence.
>>87201510
If you want nothing to do with God and wish to be removed from his presence then that's exactly what he gives you.
The other explanation I've heard is that since at the end of days when creation is fulfilled in the Parousia, we are able to see God's full presence face-to-face. For those who have not sanctified themselves (i.e. are still in a state of mortal sin), they literally cannot stand God's perfected presence and remove themselves.
Either way, Hell is what we do to ourselves.

>>87201445
While I wrote it as a joke I do kind of mean it. This whole tangent about why an omnipotent god would need to sacrifice his human avatar is seeing things from the wrong perspective.
Think of it this way, god created a human agent on your behalf to help you connect with what is basically incomprehensible to you. God's version of "I was young once, son" is "I was human once, son"
>>87201537
This is something that kills me about this guy's comics. God doesn't send people to hell, people condemn themselves by refusing God. Maybe Evangelicals or whatever he was have a different viewpoint but that's dumb as fuck. An all loving God wouldn't send people to hell, he'd respect their free will to turn away from Him.
That's like the most basic idea behind why God gave us free will. So we could choose to be good or evil.

I'm sorry if something happened in the church that hurt you or betrayed your trust. He was a sacrificial lamb, but instead of being a sacrifice to atone for the sins of a small community, it had to be for the whole of mankind. A goat isn't going to cut it in that case, it had to be the only begotten son of God. The why is difficult to explain fully in a 4chan thread, but the what/how resonates with men powerfully. Especially if you had kids, could you imagine your only son dying to save a bunch of people? Yeah it'd be great, cause he died doing something noble, but you still lose your only son. I'd recommend reading some theosophy if you're seriously interested. People have been asking these types of questions for two millennia now, and a lot of monks/priests/religious people were happy to answer.

This is, in some small part, a reason for early Christianity's popularity. Jesus was the ultimate and final sacrifice, starving peasants didn't have to give over the prize live stock to the priesthood and rich landowners couldn't buy their way into heaven with a feast.
It didn't work for long, papal indulgences come to mind, but the concept was sound.

Christianity was notable in that status did not matter in worship and salvation, but more importantly it was successful because it was portable.
Worship was not tied to a single place, people or nation. Wherever you had a priest to act "in persona Christi" and a congregation, those sacraments were all equally valid.
Very few ofher religions can claim that. Judaism was forced to adapt with the loss of its central Temple in Jerusalem but they still practice in anticipation of its return. Even Islam requires a pilgramage to Mecca. All Christianity requires is sacramental grace, which can come from wherever one finds themself.

It really shows, too. In D&D, angels are the good guys and devils are the bad guys. Morality is a physical force. All the villains are pure evil and do things like consort with demons and perform human sacrifice, which is not required or even recommended for wizardry (which is a pretty secular system fueled by study). There are no rules for sex or debauchery, and many classes are explicitly inspired by Christian heroes (paladins, most obviously). It doesn't fit every piece of fundie dogma, but it's one of the LEAST offensive RPGs to a Christian mindset. Compared to World of Darkness or Call of Cthulhu, it looks downright pious.

Being Catholic means that you're never alone in the fight.
I have the parish community, the bishops and diocese leaders, priests, lay ministers, and the very communion of Saints, all together as part of the body of Christ. To me it's not needlessly strict or punishing or restrictive. It's a purpose greater than I could have muddling around on my own. Yeah, we all fuck up, but that's what Confession is for. What other faiths have a ready source of complete absolution to bring you back into communion with not just the community on Earth, but with God himself.

I was a cradle Catholic and knew Scripture backward and forward and never missed a Sunday Mass in my life. But my prayer life was literally nonexistant and I was going through the motions with no actual belief.
Then I went to college and two things happened

Medieval Christian mysticism attached a lot of legendary supernatural powers to artifacts and relics associated with very holy people. >because he wanted a Bible that sounded like Shakespeare
*sigh*
Shakespeare sounded like English. His plays and poems were written for the masses. That was what English was like 500 years ago. Shocking, I know.
The King James Version was printed in that kind of English because James wanted a bible for Englishmen; something any barely-literate goober could read and understand, instead of requiring a deep understanding of Latin or Greek. The KJV was a huge fucking deal even in its time; before that, it was still up to the clergy to puzzle out scriptures for the layperson. Combine that with it being one of the first widely printed (as in, from a printing press, also a new invention of the day) versions of the Bible, and you might get a better understanding of why KJV remains such a big deal in the English-speaking world.
Granted, now we have versions painstakingly (or not) translated from the old languages to modern English, but that just shows the intent behind KJV lives on.

Here's a tangible clue: an entity which contacted Philip K. Dick informed him of his son's life threatening illness before a doctor later confirmed it. Not him but we gave Israel $40 billion in weapons this year, and Republicans gave Obama shit for that on the grounds of it not being enough and said he should pony up another $10 billion.
The Israel situation is actually quite interesting. Of course there are Jews in America that want us to protect it, as it's in their people's self-interest. But a lot of Christians want Israel to belong to Jews because according to prophesy, Jesus won't return unless Israel is in the hands of the Jews. He will return, kill all the Jews there, then initiate armageddon. Which to the fundies is going because they'll be whisked away by the Rapture before all the lakes of lava and shit happens.

The category of "false signs" is a convenience used by the church of Yaldabaoth to dismiss miracles and revelations inconsistent with their doctrines.
That many Jews are secular does not change the fact that the Abrahamic god is the god of the Jews. That the Talmud contains blasphemies by your reckoning does not change that either: the Abrahamic god is the god of the Jews.

One of the biggest undercurrents of classical christianity is "women exist only for men's sakes". Eve was made for Adam, FROM Adam to drive home the notion than women weren't even whole beings. You can spend virtually your whole life being a degenerate and still earn the same reward as a lifelong Christfag as long as you have a legitimate change of faith and repent. If you consider being devout a waste of time merely invested for the reward of eternity, then that's your problem.

There are some communities in the bible belt that are pretty fucking scary, but you make a good point.
I remember seeing this news thing about a school that ostracized students that didnt openly pray. Its scary as hell but your right...we dont have country wide bans on women going out alone based on religion.
Didn't he write a tract about how you can be a good person in all meaningful ways and still get sent to hell at the end of it if you didn't satiate all of God's weird quirks?
And for good measure, you can be a horrible person but if you accept God in your heart it's all fine?
Sometimes, I don't even think he liked God; he just thought that God was a bully so powerful that there was no winning move but to accept His will.

it's because Christianity was never written to be a form of government while Islam contains the Quoran, the Talmud, and a number of books which control a ridiculous amount of aspects in the life of people including government and justice.
Christianity had to exist under the Roman emperors and way of life for two hundred years so that stuck with it.

The way I see it, Christian fundamentalism is all kinds of fucked up but Muslim fundamentalism is responsible for far more shit that's actually backed by the religious figureheads and people in power. Also, the students might be ostracized by the Christians but they'd probably be outright killed in the case of the Muslims.

Christianity outlasted the fall of the Roman Empire, let along the hundreds of other countries and empires that it has coexisted with in the 2000 years it's been around. It's one thing to inform your political and social participation based on your religious beliefs as an individual, it's another one to think that the Church and clergy should be running civil government.
As much as I enjoy the constitutional republic of the USA, it's probably not going to stick around for eternity, so hitching fundamental dogmas of Christianity to that national identity is silly.

Because, if there was someone walking around today in the real world who legitimately preformed miracles and save the sick and the poor like Christ did, you'd believe in him more that you would believe in "some magical sky grandpa". right?
Jesus' whole point was to be in the flesh and preform God's Will so that no one who saw it happen could say that He was bullshitting about God's Holiness.
Bonus was that Jesus was human, so he had human emotions. He got angry, really sad, was smarmy, and was actually terrified of dying on the cross. You know the verse "Jesus Wept"? That's from when he excused Himself from the Last Supper to go pray; but he was sobbing to God to give the burden to someone else because He knew that, in a few minutes, the end was coming and it scared Him.
More people are going to follow the realistic guy who can preform great miracles, but pals around with his bros and is genuinely afraid of things, despite His powers.

I'm a congregationalist as well, my man. Only it's hard for me to find a church since I got to university. All the congregationalist churches I've been to speak only about political identities rather than actual religious doctrine. I mean, I agree with most of their points but I don't go to church for that. And the Universalist Unitarian church literally had zero discussion of doctrine besides a hazily defined spirituality.
>>87201172
My theology professor had a great analogy, but I tell mine with werewolves.
Okay imagine god as some king or more modern a CEO, and he has a fantastic car its a great car. Best that ever was like on of those concept cars only shown in shows but somehow it works. And he loves in the woods in a nice friendly house and he owns the surrounding woods and all the animals are allowed to be animals because it's a no hunting zone and he and his workers are all friendly to them.
Then one day a pack of wolves manages to break into the garage and wreck the car. Bite the tires, break the windows and shit and piss everywhere.
See if you were God you'd never let another wolf near your property again. Hell you might occasionally go out and hunt them out of spite.
So like the wolves are sorry and stuff but that doesn't really change anything, wolves can't buy a new car.
Now Jesus is God's son (ignore them being the same person first) see Jesus doesn't like the wolves being hurt, nor that his father's car is broken. So Jesus decides to buy his dad a new car, BUT here's the thing Jesus giving him a new car doesn't change his attitude towards the wolves, not like they bought him a new car.
So one day Jesus turns himself into a werewolf or just a wolf, and buys his dad a new car, and says "Dad the wolves are all my brothers and sisters now. So it's not just my gift to you it's theirs"
>>87199370

I have a great attachment to the church I grew up in, it's full of very good people, but I have come to realize that it is so hazy and milquetoast in matters of faith that I feel alienated whenever I go there. I am neither comfortable inside the church nor outside it.
I've been having a lot of spiritual anxiety the past few years because of this.
>>87209246

No the buying of the car is the metaphor for death.
The guy asked why Jesus had to be human or had to die.
The metaphor boils down to God felt there was a debt that mankind could not pay him. So he sent himself/his son to die and pay the debt for everyone.

religosity has an inherent advantage over nonreligosity in social animals because it ensures that morals and therefore behaviour remain regulated and consistent across the entire community, and that communities can be unified so long as they adhere to the same god without having to worry too much about the politics attached to living kings and documents that are believed to be of manmade origin like the constitution and mein kampf. it's universal government that arises from a strain of human nature if it works right.
in reality, there are no gods to keep shit sorted and it's all imaginary, so sects splinter off willy nilly and start warring, but overall, aetheists with self-determined morals end up loners and die childless anyways
religious thinking is even at the core of people actually following the law instead of saying "if i don't get caught it doesn't matter"

For or against Christianity? I totally get what the purpose and point the movie had, it was just way too much to show a kid. The "regular" stations of the cross from Sunday School never really emphasized the horror of it all, which needed more emphasis. Maybe not that much though. Some of it was just excessive.
>>87211393
Thats when Christians do science, not christian science.
Christian science is when you mix the two to get meaning or an answer which is always garbage.
The work of Christians in the name of science is vast and cherished. Its when the Science is used in the name of Christ that it gets muddled and ruined.
thats my two cents

>why would God allow people who he knows are evil, be born and be evil.
different abrahimc religions interpret the meaning of life, the idea of hell, and the idea of sin or evil so differently there is no way to simply answer this question, which is bias because it doesn't allow for any interpretation of hell other than a literal one, and only allows for an interpretation of sins as damning, and only allows for a meaning of life that is God testing you for his own interest.
one belief systems might answer the question with this: the meaning of life is to be tested for you own knowledge and to come closer to God, and exaltation, hell and damnation are state of mind to grow out of through obedience, and understanding of the law, sins are mistakes that can be forgiving by a loving God that wishes no ill to his children in this life or the next.
>>87215407
That's line by line the Gospels account of the event. Pilate just wanted to let him go seeing Jesus as harmless but he's threatened with a riot by the Pharisee's mob when Jerusalem was filled to the brim with Jews from outside the city celebrating.
>>87214827
>Do you think he went to heaven or hell?
no
>>87215354
The Jews convinced the Romans that Jesus was a threat. Believe it or not but Judaism was pretty well established and the rabbis and hazzans weren't that interested in a new religion that would make them powerless.
>>87201540
It's not a good analogy, because we can see with our own eyes the nest and what's inside it, but nobody saw Hell, or God, no one even has an ounce of whatever rules are to be followed to avoid Hell (otherwise there wouldn't be so many sects of Christianism)
>>87215488
>Jack goes to the good afterlife of some non-abrahamic religion

No, they convinced the Romans that the Pharisee would start a riot unless Jesus was crucified. Pilate even until the end sees Jesus as non-threatening and innocent, hence the whole "I wash my hands of this man" and the following blood oath the Jews make "His blood be on us and our children."

Wasn't Ra in the originals the one who kept hardening the Pharaoh's heart? Which was problematic because the "there are no gods besides God" approach they took in the future.
Also, killing and possibli damning to hell a bunch of egyptians just because their pharaoh was stubborn isn't fair at all. God doesn't "interfere" with free will but he threatens and blackmails his people all the time. I don't remember the exact verse, but in one of the many wars the Israelis fought over their promised land, it was one occassion where they were commanded by God to kill an entire population and they were later punished because they spared some of them. That's not respecting free will at all.

All Jesus says is that it's not sin that causes these bad things to occur.
>Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” [Lk 13:2-5]

If you don't care that an inherently extremely cruel method of reproduction was part of God's plan for one of his creatures, I don't know what to tell you, man.
But let's set the goal post a bit further anyway.
Let's go to humans, the "superior" life form.
The guinea worm. It is ingested by drinking water and grows in the human body until it is 2-3 feet long. It makes the limb it has infected feel like it is burning so the human hosts finds a water source and the parasite can release its thousands of young in the water.
The Filarial worm.
Gets spread by musquitos. It burrows in your lymphatic system and causes terrible swellings because your bodily fluids get blocked up. Making you look like you are an elephant man hybrid and it will cripple you until you extremely carefully have it removed.
The Candiru.
A fish that is attracted to the smell of urine and will burrow in your genitals to drink your blood. Enough said about that one.
All creatures supposedly designed by a loving God. Please explain those.

>>87216838
Again, that's just one possibility coming from someone with only general knowledge of theology.
From a Christian perspective it wouldn't make sense that he'd sacrifice Jesus if he didn't care about humanity.
However to answer your question, I have no fucking clue why ancient Jews would worship a God who told one of their folk heroes that his suffering didn't matter to Him. They probably did it for the same reason other ancient religions did, believing that angering their god would bring forth nature's wrath.

In jewish tradition, animals were slain as part of atonement rituals, and when covenants were made. prior to Jesus, jews would have to regularly spill (animal) blood in order to be considered pure enough to experience god's presence (enter the temple, etc.). Jesus was meant to remove the idea of "pure zones" by taking on the role of the final animal sacrifice - unblemished and completely sin-free in spite of having free will.
God sacrificed God to Himself, in a sense, but the important factor was that Jesus was fully human. Therefore, according to God's own laws regarding covenants, the two completed a covenant on our (humanity's) behalf because God knew that no human would meet the requirements of the perfect sacrifice. Said covenant tore down the need for holy sites and the need for ritual purification, allowing God to live among us (as the Holy spirit) without breaking his own rules (as not to invalidate himself in our eyes, I suppose) This also means that He, by order of the covenant He formed, is not allowed to remove his presence from our lives even if we mess up, as the terms aren't voided because Jesus sealed the deal.
we get communion from the tradition of spilling blood to renew covenants - jesus declared the wine his blood in order to give us a way to fulfill the original requirements of holy covenants without actually having to have god on hand to donate blood whenever we screw up
in short, God became the perfect man (Jesus) so that he could make an agreement that we couldn't mess up (the agreement being that we get to be in his presence again, and all we have to do is follow his commands - even then, he offers forgiveness for shortcomings).
The only way to get rid of God at this point is to declare that you don't want to receive what he's offered. God help you if that's your choice.
>>87201269
It's because the trope of the Dying and Resurrected God was really popular within religions of the region and had been co-opted by Hellenistic, and later Roman Rulers.
Julius Caesar and Augustus were both deified after they died and the Imperial Cult (cult of the Emperors) was a new big thing in the Roman World of which Palestine was a part.
Basically Jesus dying to achieve apotheosis didn't seem outside the realm of possibility for most of the populace as the Roman Emperors also became gods after they died, and participation within the Imperial Cult was mandatory (to a point).
>>87217842
So in other words: here's a story with hundreds of years worth of content and hundreds of authors, how do we fix the continuity?
By making up a retcon for everything. It doesn't make sense but it doesn't have to because nothing that happened before it is meaningful anymore, except that really old stuff near the beginning so we can tell the readers we care about our roots.

The disappointment of houses passing Chick Tracts out instead of candy at Halloween, looking forward to the weird guy who passed them out to kids boarding the school bus because it's fun to laugh at them with your friends on the way home...

Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!" -- As many of those who did not believe in God were standing around just then, he provoked much laughter. Has he got lost? asked one. Did he lose his way like a child? asked another. Or is he hiding? Is he afraid of us? Has he gone on a voyage? emigrated? -- Thus they yelled and laughed.
The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes. "Whither is God?" he cried; "I will tell you. We have killed him -- you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light lanterns in the morning? Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine decomposition? Gods, too, decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.
"How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it? "

Why do some American Protestants hate Catholics so much?
>>87218694
Well, to be fair to that anon, no one really knows how the universe started or if there even really was a start.
Things like infinity and the end or start of time are too big for creatures like us to get on anything but a purely abstract and simplified level.
God might not be an explanation that I agree with and I don't agree that the norms and values defied from a being like that are inherently criticism free, if they even come from a creature like that, but it's not like my explanation and understanding of the universe is founded in concrete proof.
So, while I disagree with them, it's not like I have all the answers.
As long as we don't force our belief on others or cause harm, it's all okay.

>>87220024
it more of how satisfied you are with the answer. We can roll the clock back to 10^-32 seconds or so after the universe began and this has been test quite well in multiple ways. What happens as you get closer and close to the singularity is when nothing makes sense. And there really isn't a way of talking about before the big bang because time doesn't exist there.
Personally, I'm pretty damned happy with that much knowledge, it's pretty amazing. Do I want a better answer? Sure, but that's cause I study and love physics. but I know lots that stop at the basic big bang picture and don't need to go further.
The best Chick tracts are the anticatholic ones.

This right here. North Korean media could only aspire to match the level of bullshit he pumped out on the regular all day every day.
I saw Jack Chick at a grocery store in California years ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for tracts or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Twinkies in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the cakes and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each cake and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
