Originally it was /meant/ to be Peter's kids who rapidly aged because of spider semen or some shit. Marvel didn't like that since it made Peter look old, so they changed it so that Goblin would be the father. Also, no one at Marvel is allowed to retcon either of them since there was some stupid mandate or something saying that any changes Quasada made were final.
