Amber defines Ethan by his gayness. If he doesn't have a boyfriend, then he's not properly gay.

Walky's skipping Math 102 because he can't take getting one bad grade in a class that's a little bit harder than usual. Amber gave Ethan some shit for recloseting himself, but she was kinda shitty about it.

It also seems that Amber is trying to compartmentalise Amazi-Girl, but an Anon who's dating somebody with actual Dissociative Identity Disorder pointed out that Amber hasn't gone through anything nearly as traumatic to warrant that.

>It also seems that Amber is trying to compartmentalise Amazi-Girl, but an Anon who's dating somebody with actual Dissociative Identity Disorder pointed out that Amber hasn't gone through anything nearly as traumatic to warrant that.
That anon here! Here's another bit of information for you. If you look at Mask or No Mask (the first Danny/Amber Slipshine), she is VERY much the same person, regardless of whether she's suited up or not.

Anyone she talks to who knows that she's Amazi-Girl can easily tell that she's the same person. She's not dissociated.

Compartmentalizing in the way that Amber does it is just shifting responsibility off of her "main" "identity."

~GirlAnon
>>
>>87175696
I don't think she's ever done it as a responsibility thing. Like she actually thinks herself and Amazi-Girl are separate. She blames Amber for why she had to get rid of Danny. She thinks Amber will stab Sal. She thinks Amazi-Girl made the decision to break up.

For the record I'm grateful that you shared your experiences, and I have absolutely no idea about DID. Just that there are people on the DOA site who think Amber's behaviour is like their own and I'd feel like a total asshole if I just said that they're lying.

My guess is that David Willis only nudged things in a DID direction after people started commenting about it.

But they are lying. Or at least, are extremely misinformed
>>

Couldn't you say that about everyone who says they have mental health problems on the internet?

I'm not denying that there's probably like one dude who decided he had a japanese schoolgirl in his body. That shit where alters are hugely different in every way confuses the fuck out of me to the point where it's the hard part of me accepting that it even exists.

I don't doubt for a minute that Willis has no fucking clue about it, though.

It should be noted that having a distinct identity that assumes control over your body doesn't necessarily mean you have DID.
>>
>>87182004
Is that how that works? I wish I understood more about this illness.

I guess the way I saw it is that Amber does have at least some dissociative tendencies with her having to switch when she sees Sal and compartmentalizing actions between the two.

We'll never get a concrete answer, but weird superhero bullshit aside I think it makes sense, at least a bit.

>My boyfriend has it, and it (as far as I can tell) developed because he was pretty neglected as a child. The good thing is that he hasn't swapped out in ages, presumably because I'm pretty attentive about making sure he doesn't get lonely. I'm finally on good terms with the other guy, so he hasn't given me any crap lately.

>It is the weirdest thing ever to fall asleep next to him when he's swapped over, because he literally smells different. DID alters have different chemical makeups, to an extent. In fact, one alter can have an allergy that another does not. So their pheromones are different, and it is legitimately like being next to a person who is not my boyfriend.

>I know at least one other person who has it, as well. And my boyfriend's ex claims she has it, and guess what? She did the same BS as what Amber does. She would act out and then blame it on her alter. When he tried to have his alter talk to hers, it was (apparently) pretty apparent that she was hardcore faking.

>The other guy used to make me cry. The swaps tend to happen when he's tired. He's sleeping a lot better now, so that helps.

>One time, we were in the buffeteria at my college, and he swapped without me realizing it. He started getting really mean (which should have clued me in, but I don't handle meanness very well) and ended up forcing me to eat something really spicy (and I *HATE* spicy things). Literally started crying. A few minutes later, he suddenly swapped back (presumably because the sight of his girlfriend sobbing in public was enough to snap him out of it). I had to walk him through the whole thing, and he was legitimately baffled by it. That was a hard one to get over.

>There was another time when he grabbed me by the arms and shook me briefly. In public. In the computer lab on campus.

>DID isn't some fun thing where you play hero or whatever. It's not imaginary friends. And it's not playing dress-up.

~GirlAnon
>>
>>87182262
No, you pretty much nailed it on the head. Amber has legit mental issues, but it's not DID. It's an exceedingly maladaptive coping mechanism featuring extreme compartmentalization and projection; she's defining actions and attributes of the whole into two distinct personas and her personality is disintegrating. The example that I gave of something similar to DID but not DID would actually be a pretty severe manifestation of schizophrenia. Something else Amber doesn't suffer from.
>>
>>87182478
Well, I'm lost.

I'll just accept Willis being a retard who listened to Cerberus.
>>
>>87183566
Look at it like this: What Willis says is DID is actually something far more psychopathic.
>>
Psychology is an exceedingly complex topic that has the bad luck of popular consciousness being inundated by over-simplified, outdated, or just plain wrong information. In a real world context, Amber has mental problems but doesn't suffer from a concrete mental illness. She's also not legally insane.
>>
>>87183808
Willis actually managed to miss a huge facet of Amber's personality that lines up directly with her father, she's incredibly controlling towards others and self-centered.
>>
>>87184208

I think Mike pointed that out to her, but Willy's sycophants chalk that up as a reason Mike is an unforgivably monstrous cissie boy.

He did, and in a huge failure of self-awareness, Amber's response was to get mad and threaten Mike with bodily harm.

And then they didn't appear in the same strip for 3 years.

Mike and Amber is one of the few character pairings for Mike that makes sense. They were friends from before college (along with Ethan), so they have some reason to be around each other, unlike the other freshmen who hate Mike that should just ditch him (not that Amber couldn't ditch him too, but that would be an important character moment). Amber has flaws that are very apparent that no one else is able to really make her examine, because she does roll over everyone else with bluster or walling them off. Amber can actually react to Mike, because unlike everyone else who just takes shit from him and then asks "why are you so mean" or frowns, she would tell him off, punch him or S E V E R, basically lots of intense reactions to a kind of intense person.

Instead, Mike makes a fairly astute observation, Amber reacts poorly, and Willis never puts them in the same strip again.
>>
>>87185009

I feel like Willis was actually following a fairly good thing here, Amber's reaction being basically "Shit he's right", only to get scared off of it.

In this case it's more like Mike is cautioning her rather than prodding.

Willy's fucktard fanbase wouldn't get that, though. God, my kids are going to have to deal with their spawn...
>>
>>87185009
I think the real reason why Mike isn't used very much isn't because he'll trigger the readers but because he's catalyst in a series that thrives on a lack of dynamism.
>>
>>87185009
>He did, and in a huge failure of self-awareness, Amber's response was to get mad and threaten Mike with bodily harm.
That's Amber's first reaction to everything. Just like her dad.

But that self-awareness will never happen. Especially when her one chance to figure that out was derailed by a plot from 5 years ago. She could have maybe figured something out when she confronted Sal publicly, but Ryan entering her field of vision ruined any chance of her considering how she treats people.

>passing papers
>in what appears to be a large lecture course
I don't think that's how it works. Hell, I don't even think you GET papers back in large lecture courses. But this is assuming that's what it is.

The REAL offense here is how Willis thinks Billie being co-dependent to the point that people are telling her NOT to go see her is supposed to be funny and/or endearing.
>>
>>87186628

I think it's just an old joke, which makes it more tired than a ripoff.

>Ahah! I take off this article of clothing!
>Egads! There's a second strapon beneath the first!
>>
>>87186704
Yeah, I saw that after I posted the thing. Whoops!

When I was in college, the way I got papers back in big lecture courses that didn't have discussion/lab sections was by going down and seeing the TA after lecture was over. The professor divided 'em up by last name, e.g. all the A-Hs would go see one TA. The class I'm teaching now has about 250 students in it, but they get their papers back during labs, which are only 22 students large. Much easier that way. Passing them down the rows is not only a stupid way to do it, it's actually illegal. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) is a federal law that among other things prohibits non-consensual disclosure of academic records. Technically speaking, handing back a student's graded assignment to another student is a violation. One violation isn't enough to get anybody in trouble, but if this is a regular thing, it means a real shitstorm for the math department's administrative assistant (the poor sap who has to handle the paperwork for these things).
>>
>>87186549
>>87186704
Actually, come to think of it, it would be interesting to see how far Willis takes Billie to see Ruth again, assuming her efforts are blocked at every turn.
Think he'd have Billie actually attempt suicide in the hopes of getting a bed in the same room as her?

>>87186899
Y'know, I never wondered why teachers would bring papers directly to students instead of passing them down the row, but now I get it.

But if I had to guess, Willis just remembered papers being handed down desk rows in high school and thinks it applies to college as well.
>>
>>87186704
>>87186899
A weekly graded assignment isn't weird, the fact that it isn't an online assignment is weird. Though both of my math requirements freshman year did have actual turn-in weekly assignments, they were small enough that the three TAs could handle it.
>>
>>87186549
Pretty boring stuff.
>Codependent
I find it pretty weak that the university therapy staff or whoever did enough interviewing with Billie, Ruth and third parties to determine this, but it happened completely off-screen. It would've been interesting to see how they characterized their relationship talking to a third party, maybe have some juxtaposition of somewhat serious notes with their melodramatic language or vice versa, but oh well.

>>87186628
Since it's Willis, the inspiration is probably that one Batman TAS episode where he loses the cape and cowl but has a bandeezy mask underneath.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnfat0NXNLs
>>

To be fair, I think that when Becky said that Dina carried one around, she meant that Dina had a spare in her backpack. She probably carries a spare one in case something happens to the normal one.
>>

>Y'know, I never wondered why teachers would bring papers directly to students instead of passing them down the row, but now I get it.
"Passing the papers down the row" would require assigned seating, and I don't remember a single college class giving enough of a shit to regiment students to such a degree.

Knowing Willis, it would have just been a badly worded recap of events. Which might have been nice, in retrospect. This whole affair has gone on for so long that it would be nice to see it all condensed into something that actually made sense. There's no reason for Billie to say that Ruth is all she has. It makes no sense at all.
