He was so skilled at tying together weird loose ends into masterful mobius slipknots, even as recently as the AR=Doc Scratch stuff. There were so many balls in the air it was like a nudist Cirque du Soleil, and nothing would have been more satisfying than watching them fall into place just as we hoped Hussie would grant us.

But in the end, he couldn't even come up a single shitty twist, let alone a masterstroke of Problem Sleuthesque genius to bring it all home. So many plotlines abandoned; characters, forgotten; promises, broken.

I had faith in him till the very last page. Only then when I saw the curtains close did I realize what a fucking mess it was.

DaveJade is the only good relationship in all of Homestuck, and here's why:

Both characters built on each other in a constructive way. Dave's primary issue is that he has to be the coolkid. In most conversations, he's perpetually defensive, trying to prove that he's really that cool. It's only with Jade (and Terezi, I suppose) that he's willing to drop the facade even a little. Yet nobody except Jade (and maybe Terezi, though it's hard to say what level of irony she was operating on) actually believes for a second that he is cool. The fact that Jade accepts it is what allows him to let his guard down while talking to her. She enables him to move out of his shell and become his own person.

On the other hand, Jade has enormous potential, but no one but Dave recognizes it. Rose mostly ignores her, except for when she wants a prediction, and John regards her as his silly friend but not a whole lot beyond that. Only Dave sees that, with some help, she could become something far greater than she is, and he dedicates a lot of time to helping her achieve that. Look at the client/server relationships: Rose is pretty hands-on with John, but is more concerned with figuring out the game mechanics than helping John out. Dave pretty much leaves Rose alone after she enters, since he knows she'd find being treated like she can't handle herself patronizing. John doesn't really get a chance to do anything with Jade beyond placing the initial entry equipment. But Dave spends a lot of time trying to help Jade figure things out and get situated.

Basically, Dave and Jade compliment and complete each other. No one else in Homestuck has that kind of relationship.

OK, let's do something creative in this thread: write some ideas for a Homestuck rewrite. Note at what point it diverges from HS as Hussie wrote it. I'm not asking for a lot of detail; broad strokes are fine.

It diverges pretty early in A6. There's no bullshit 3-year time skip; getting to the new session takes the kids only a few days. (To compensate for this, the Alpha kids are aged down to 13 - not that it really matters too much, since it's not like any of the Beta kids except maybe Jade acted like 13-year-olds anyways). This gives them a bit of time to decompress, while not turning into the boring pointless bullshit of the 3-year-journey.

Second, the Horrorterrors maintain an active role in the story (or as much of one as they ever had, anyways, so basically cryptic communication through Rose). Jack remains the main villain; as Doc Scratch said, Lord English's destruction is sanctioned by Paradox Space; Jack's is not.

Jade's theme of isolation and being a soft Mary Sue parody are both very strong themes, and having her lose all of her shit while her friends are suddenly getting huge power boosts in Act 5 was a very interesting way to go about it. But then it slowly became clear Hussie didn't have a plan for her and Jade just became this background prop who just had her two themes and nothing else.

I think a lot of Homestuck would have to be changed, but I'd make it so Jade's arc actually goes somewhere good and lets her character points resolve in some way.

I think an interesting (but not necessarily good) change would be having John, Dave, and Rose isolated in one half of the timeskip, and let Jade be with all the trolls. Suddenly, the loneliest character has the most people to interact with and her outlandishness is very dull compared to what the trolls are up to. I'm not sure where Jade's character would go from that point but if I was autistic enough to write a fixfic that'd be what I'd do it on.
