I wonder how it feels to know a cartoon you tried to seriously make is remembered for a porn parody
>>87136016
Depends on how much levity you have.
>>87136016
honestly i'd be flattered to know that that many years later, someone still cared enough about my failed pilot to put that sort of effort into a porn parody of it
>>87136016
Probably a little frustration as it could have torpedoed his attempts at turning it into a feature film at Sony.
>>87136016
Probably better than knowing that despite being well received, your dream and passion was rejected because the protagonist was female.
>>87136203
It was kind of dull, I honesty don't see this being anything more than a MLAATR.
>>87136252
>MLAATR
so a fun, comfy, well made show fondly remembered years later?
yeah how awful that would've been
>>87136262
I'm not knocking it but I'm saying it would have never gotten the movie deal even if it was moved to a series.
I'm hearing a lot of talking and not a lot of dancing!
>>87136242
Is that true? I mean, it sounds absolutely plausible, but did the execs really tard out about that yet again?
>>87140833
Yes. The showed was passed on because it had a female lead and they (at Nickelodeon) didn't want another girl show. Instead more Barnyard cartoons were produced.
>>87136016
i do not know? I'm just dancing here
>>87140833
>did the execs really tard out
Do you really have to ask?
>>87141037
>implying a female lead automatically makes it a girl show
>giving a shit who watches the show, so long as it gets ratings
Why are executives so retarded? I can't wait until these old as fuck mummies dies and get replaced with people who aren't stuck in outdated ways of thinking.
>Instead more Barnyard cartoons were produced.
.... Naturally.
>>87136002

>giving a shit who watches the show, so long as it gets ratings
But ratings don't matter on their own. High ratings are good, it'll catch attention of potential sponsors, but unless those sponsors see that it's going to reach boys 8-12 or girls 13-18 or whatever group that sponsor's product is trying to reach, they just won't give a fuck. That's why you don't typically see beer, or condoms, or tampons being advertised on channels that focus primarily on children's entertainment. Sponsors are how channels bring in money.

Didn't he get pissy about that animation or am I thinking of something else he got pissy about?
>>87152242
The other anons are just being prickly.
Waterson was actually a big fan of animation, and was seriously considering making a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon at one point. Ultimately though, he felt he'd have to give up too much control to whatever company took up the license. He didn't want his work to end up exploited for a quick buck, and he also didn't want to put voices to the characters that would clash with what his readers heard in their heads.
I'm sure someone's going to say that's pretentious of him, but consider the state of Garfield these days and tell me a cartoonist being perhaps a little overly prideful and particular about how their work is used is really that bad.
The best way to describe Bill is a purist, for good or for ill.
>>87141511
That animation is seamless.
I need to scrounge up more webms of this movie.

I always respect people who know that every medium has its strengths and weaknesses. You can't just make any comic a movie, or any movie a game, or any game a book. Something will be lost in translation every time. Just look at how shit the 2003 Hulk movie was, in large part because a majority of it was filmed in a way that was supposed to replicate a comic on screen. Why have a movie made if it is just going to strive to be a comic instead of a movie? Books lose detail, length, and a bit of reader personalization (for voices and pacing) when being animated or acted, just like movies would lose cinematography, music, ambiance, and its own pacing by becoming a book, not to mention the entire visual aspect would be changed.
tl;dr Good choice on his part, even if I would be happy to see more animated Calvin and Hobbes by a fan some time.

At the time he was considering making the cartoon, Bart Simpson mania was sweeping the nation.
I'm sure he was fearful that a network would try to "Bart-ify" Calvin or at least try to cash in on the craze
>>87150314
I beg to differ
