It seems to happen extra with women. Like the filmmakers of Civil War have hyped how powerful Scarlet Witch is in interviews (when based on what we've seen on screen, we'd think she's powerful but not that powerful). Jean Grey too.

There's an assumption that we'll always assume women are weaker, so they have to hype how strong they are and then they wind up being The Most Powerful Person In the Universe.

For Carol though I think the hype could work if only because the character who should be their Superman, Thor, doesn't have a strong enough actor to sell it. If you told me Carol was their Superman I might believe it if only because I can't believe it of Hemsworth.

In terms of fighting technique she's definitely on top since she's been trained in fighting for a good part of her life
She also has access to magical weapons which Superman has no heightened resistance to but Superman has a shit ton of things stashed in his fortress of solitude he's picked up over the years which is probably just as deadly for Diane.
Superman also has other powers on top of strength and flight like good old heat vision which can become decisive factors in a brawl

I agree with you for the most part anyway, but... as a long term WW fan I've always hated her weakness to sharp weapons. This means that anyone with a gun or knife could possibly kill her, no matter how improbable. I think they need to finally alter or remove that weakness because it's just a stupid flaw to have here in the modern day of comics. You could always just write in some kind of weapon to hurt anybody including her. But that weakness to sharp weapons really would eventually kill her at some point.

Superman could punch her through a building and just by sheer luck she could land on a sharp piece of metal and be rendered dead.
