So I think what it is is that it's the idea that "Female characters are too often passive, so I'm going to rework a past trauma and it's better for it to be something that she did--even as a fuckup--than something that was done to her."

the problem is that trying to do this on all sorts of past events just ends up making the MC into something of a sociopath.

That makes sense, I guess, but it changes soooo much context to what happened and the aftermath

I mean I like it when female leads are allowed to fuck up, but this changes it from "was victimized, let a guy die/kinda murdered him as revenge" to "cheated on husband, lied about it, deflected all blame, then also still nearly killed the dude (??? maybe?)"

that's a bit less of a fuck up and more of a "Bobbi is a HUGE asshole"

>>
>>87082507

That's an interesting choice to make and I appreciate how deliberate it is but using it to retcon stuff that happened to her in the past into stuff that she was an active driving force towards is more questionable. I mean, sometimes shit just happens that you have no control over, I don't think it's possible (or a good idea) to have a protagonist who has NEVER been victim to outside circumstance or influence in anything ever

can someone summarize today's DEATH OF X for me
>>

Indeed. She still looks human, but has features that suggest non-Terran ethnicity.

So is this how the build up for the Legion is going to work? They're going to show up in various books at random until BAM, a Time Sphere appear and Brainy pops out telling everyone to get in? Cause that's not a bad way to do it. Theoretically, it entices readers familiar with them to check out other books they'd normally not pic up, and at the same time fosters the casuals' curiosity of just just who the hell these Legion people are. In theory, anyway. We'll just have to see.

Hey anon. I didn't really make the connection other Anon of Green Lantern/Flash team ups either, but man there was never a Green Lantern main character as husbando as Wendell, was there?

Also, Mockingbird's Adventures in Glib Feminism are over, with Phantom Rider defeated by Internet Celebrity Nerds, and Bobbi apparently being able to consent when she didn't know what century she was even in.
>>
>>87083214
I don't get who's in charge of deciding these things. A-Force was prettty dull, and Mockingbird is a trainwreck, but these are the comics they want to point to as ideological touchstones. What the fuck benefit do they get out of cancelling and fucking them around?

Like even for the people who will buy any comic with certain stances no matter how bad, which I feel must be a fair part of Marvel's audience here, this fucks them over. And you totally annihilate the possibility of actual good product.

It's like their celebrity writer trend too. I saw that advertised on the solicits. Look at what DC is doing - taking promising established prose/comic/TV writers and giving them a class in how to write a DC comic. Marvel is throwing them on a book for the benefit of the name like Gerard Way on Young Animal ;^)

Isn't it their monsters unleashed thing? Hulk is confirmed to play into that IIRC.

I feel like the book has quite a strong take in it's 'let's take the gloves off and look at Jenn like she were the hulk, not the female variant' too. Not the most out there thing, but definitely something you can Write Good on.

The Crossing and Teen Tony would be better examples, thiugh

I feel this is where shit falls down. I don't need to like the protagonists, I don't need to think oh Medusa you're such a great person and you really have the moral highground here wow. Marvel has been doing a prolonged hatchet job on Cyclops and I literally more interested in Cyclops than I have ever been, because desperate sorta-fascist renegade is a good story hook.

It did, kind of, because of the heavy KANG in both.
I think the big Crossing takeaway from Forever, though was retconning Moonraker (who was kinda cool IMO) into being a Space Phantom instead of Mantis's dad Libra.

Gru was so good at taking fuckups and spinning them into something interesting

a quote from FabNic:

Q: You seem to enjoy using characters that have already been created and "abandoned" by other writers so to speak. Is there any reason why you prefer to do this?

A: Well, I think it's something Kurt and Tom strongly believed in as well, so it makes perfect sense to maintain that. It's part and parcel for the book's tradition and the character's history. It's about looking at longtime established Marvel characters in a different light. We are all, creatively speaking, very much "forward moving traditionalists." Meaning we respect what came before but understand the need to always move it forward. But we also adhere to the basic teachings of his Lordship Gru (Mark Gruenwald), who said, "Why create something new that duplicates what already exists? Just use what exists better." So we try to.

Quagmire here is from the Squadron Supreme world. While he's an Earthling, he taps into some sort of extradimensional space for his 'muck', which acts like suffocating super-tar, basically.

I have no idea how he got to 616 Earth, or whether he's the identical counterpart on 616 to the SS Quagmire, though.
>>
There's a balance between reusing old shit and making new characters.... someone's gotta add toys to the sandbox
>>
>>87087069
It isn't a cry against innovation. It's an argument against redundancy.

Why are there three to four seperate Teen X-Men teams from the last decade alone, when all only ever last long enough to get mass murdered and replaced by the next one? Like, as much as each group of X-Students has standouts, why bother creating YET ANOTHER group of them when the last group just got shoved in the damn closet?
>>
>>87087069
To borrow your metaphor, it means dont just replace the old toys with toys that are basically the same except newer, you have to actually add NEW toys.
>>
>>87087534
It's fine now because we've formed a circular loop back the original teens, anon. Each of the X-Men is a hideous everlasting centipede monstrosity in space-time now.
