I definitely agree with your points, to the point that I've argued them before, like in this image of a screen cap someone posted of my own post that I saved because I'm an enormously petty individual. But those are story telling faults more than anything, these are not issues presented to John that he fails to overcome, they're just moments that never happen.

As we are essentially asking "which would u fug", more important is the the fact that John is a good person. Not a perfect person, but a good one who is usually shown to be someone of strong character, and willing to trust and help his friends.

You're twisting the situation. He originally did it to "protect" her and then gloated a bit about it. When he realized he was a fucking murderer, he immediately apologized and everything.

I honestly don't get that stance on Tavros. He trolls Dave once (completely harmless), kills Jade's grandpa (out of a misguided but understandable sense of heroism), vaguely threatens to control Bec (but accepts Jade's refusal)... and that's about it.
Other characters do equally bad shit but I don't see anyone laughing at, say, Terezi's suffering.

And really, all of these decisions make a depressing amount of sense when you think about how Vriska's been bullying him all through the comic. He's constantly exposed to someone who somehow gets her way every time, by using force and manipulation, and telling him how the only thing that matters is taking what you want no matter what others have to say.
So him resorting to these tactics and acting like an overconfident asshole (and clearly failing at being one) is more an indicator of how much the abuse has screwed him up than of his normal personality.

At the very worst, he's self-centered and kind of oblivious to people around him (see: Jake). But he's certainly not *selfish*.

I've always been pretty disturbed by that sort of stuff (the weenie stuff), given, you know, all the abuse.
Pretty much anyone would end up completely unsure of themselves under Vriska's constant bullying. She was pretty light on retcon Terezi and look what happened to her.
That Tavros could actually flee, gather an army and flip her off all without having a breakdown or entirely giving up on his values or even crying is a testament to his resilience, at the very least.
