Sleepover may have killed a Janna/Marco romance, but I think those who say it also killed any sort of Janna/Marco relationship are going way too far.

The possibility of them being childhood friends is still very much alive. It can't "just" be about picking on Marco for being an easy target, for Janna shows genuine concern over Marco's thoughts and opinions: she got upset when Marco didn't want to play Truth and Punishment, she got excited at the idea of Marco liking "blood red," and she looked genuinely upset when Marco slapped her down so easily and even callously.

I'd also point out that Janna answering that her crush is on a deceased poet is a potential sign of immaturity with regards to romantic interest. It is possible that she isn't quite full into the "liking boys" stage of her life yet like Jackie or Star. If so, then there's always potential for change. (But maybe I'm just deluded by how much I think Janna would be a far more interesting rival for Star than Jackie, especially as Janna's is moving up to a position as the third party in a Star-Marco-Janna trio while Jackie remains far removed from Star and Marco.)

Though it's confirmed to not be a crush, Janna clearly cares about Marco on some level.

Friendenemies shows that Marco is very charismatic and can even somewhat win over someone who explicitly hates him. It is easy to imagine that Janna has similarly been won over by Marco's charisma and genuinely wants to be his friend.

Re: the recent "are sentient creatures in the wand now canon or just a one-episode gag that will never come up again" debate, I'm gonna go with canon.

Remember that mutated narwhal from the Season 2 premiere, hidden in a random box in Star's secrets closet, that said "help me" to Marco? It was probably part of a Narwhal Blast but was either mutated by the spell or, because of its deformities, wasn't returned to the wand after the attack like the others.

Since we saw a narwhal/butterfly hybrid baby inside the wand, it seems that new creatures can appear and reproduce with the others and that the number inside isn't fixed. We've also seen Star's creations talk to her in the past and start a fight club in her room, so an episode showing them interacting with each other isn't that unusual.

Interesting, yes. More interesting than half of the show's main character dynamic? No. Marco is just as much the main character as Star is, he's the deuteragonist. Up and replacing the deuteragonist with an ascended side character mid-second season just doesn't work, at least not for this kind of show.

That being said, I think she's an interesting addition to that dynamic Star and Marco have. It's not much to talk about, but there does lie potential in her tagging along for interdimensional shenanigans.
