So I'm pretty late to the party and honestly just finished reading this.

Exactly why is the ending so controversial? Like yeah, it could've been better. But it was far from the "awful horrible evil spit in the fans' faces" type ending I was expecting from you guys.

I will say I preferred the pre-retcon versions of the scourge sisters but eh, there're worse things.

It just felt very truncated.
Character arcs got half-assed and felt like they were cut off early on, subplots derailed near the end and felt completely pointless, and going further back, pretty much the entirety of Act 6 was superfluous bloat. I 100% believe that the comic could have been completed much more satisfyingly without the Alpha Kids or the Dancestors, and possibly without Calliope and Caliborn too.
Collide was GOAT though.

The ^2 sprites were there for like, 1% of the comic so there's no use complaining about them- they also introduced LOL ULTIMATE SELVES which, while bad, was still a thing. The troll sprites helped tie up a lot of arcs and lead into a lot of decent things(mainly talking about ARquius and Erisol), but again, they're side characters so they're not much use complaining about them.

Hussie belabored this in newsposts throughout Act 6, the difference between archival and serial reading. For the fans who were there for the ride of the updates, and the undeniably RIDICULOUS hiatuses (especially in hindsight, considering what they ended up actually producing), the end was absolutely a slap in the face. We only have conjecture, which leaves several equally valid but absolutely irreconcilable alternatives, with massively different outcomes for all the main characters. Literally all the kids and trolls could be FUCKING DEAD, or the beta kids could end up TRAPPED FOREVER IN A BLACK HOLE OUTSIDE OF SPACETIME, or fucked up time shenanigans could have produced a BATTLE WITH LEGIT LORD ENGLISH AT THE VICTORY PLATFORM, or ALL OF ACT 7 WAS CALIBORNS IN-UNIVERSE CREATION, possibly with related META BULLSHIT WHERE 'HOMESTUCK HAD TO END WITHOUT RESOLUTION, TO TRAP ENGLISH'.

The biggest problem with the end is like HIMYM in that a lot of character stuff that they had built up was thrown out/ignored and they had to fit an idea they had for they ending that they thought of years ago. instead of changing it so it fits the thing as it was at the end they just go ahead with the original despite how little sense it makes at that time

There's a ton of shit I didn't go into.
The biggest problem I see is the character bloat, I've projected about, like 60 of them and while most will play minor roles/die very quickly I don't know how to incorporate that kind of stuff well. And I'm also insecure about dialogue and my ability to pace and generally spread the plot's big moments.

Was it really crowded by the end of Act 6? Kanaya, Karkat, Terezi, John, Rose, Dave, Jade, Roxy, Dirk, Jake, Jane, and Calliope. The rest are non-characters.

There's so much you can do with them and I won't make the same mistake Hussie did- I wouldn't spend extended time on them, I'd frequently switch to something else, and I'd tell it non-linearly. If they have use, aren't a burden to read, and become interesting then I see no problem with trying to make them relevant again.
