It doesn't take much work to get abs, abs are about equal to the amount of leg muscle heroes are generally drawn with. Being generally athletic is different from being buff. You can draw with softness and still have abs vs drawing with visual strength and heavy muscles.

Superheroes are generally in fit shape, so I have to problem with them having abs.

In terms of how they are shown, I prefer them implied by the colorist, as in your Starfire pic.

When the abs are rendered by the penciler/inker, it is too much abs/unattractive. It looks like the abs are never relaxed. One thing I hated about the Image artists in the 90s was, not only did they draw the abs, they would render each muscle with crosshatching.... just too much
