I like it for the idea of your body turning against itself. Losing control of yourself, but still having enough awareness to see yourself twist and changed to something else's design.

Imagine if in The Thing or Dead Space, if when the alien slowly takes over you, if your consciousness was still there. Able to see, hear, and most importantly, feel everything it was doing to you as it warps and changes your body.

I was going to say yes, but now that I think about it, I don't know. Body horror is described as "the graphic destruction or degeneration of the body" and can include "decay, disease, parasitism, mutation, or mutilation".

While punching a man's head through his own ass is indeed graphic, I think it falls right on the edge of what could be considered body horror, with true body horror being if the victim is alive long enough to actually experience what is happening to them, such as with vivisections and flaying.

That's the most annoying thing about it though. If it had been purely CG from the start that would be one thing but the fact they filmed it with practical effects and later completely covered them up in CG rather than use a mix to enhance them leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I liked it because it wasn't just another "Handheld bedroom ghost" movie, or a remake of a classic.
The entire thing just felt really oppressive to me. I liked the paranoia of it all, and how helpless the family was.

No idea. I found The Thing terrifying, but mainly because of the unstoppable and undetectable monster that would end all life on earth if unstopped. I suppose it the fact that people are no longer in control of their bodies. It's hard to be hit deeper than that in a way that's easy to convey in most media. "The monster is inside you" immediately grips the viewer.
For some unknown reason, body horror arouses me, so I'm no longer frightened by it and can watch most horror movies despite being a scaredy cat. It's neat.

Anyone else read Apothecia? It's a free webcomic and I thought it was pretty cute. The artist was suppossed to do some kinda underwater thing at some point but apparently dropped it for a HS/SU styled comic. The art is not so appealing.

From what I understand, the only reason given was an exec thought it looked too much like an 80's film and said they had to redo everything in CGI. If you see the behind the scenes work on the puppets, it was all amazing work.

The movie was okay. It made some modern horror tropes mistakes (has to be a heroine that lives, too many clear shots of the monster, etc.), and its the one that made me realize a modern trend in horror movies that was bugging me, but I couldn't put my finger on: the soundtrack is too invasive and doesn't help build the scenes. I watched the whole movie and felt like there was a radio playing in the other room, messing with the suspense. Compare to the original, where the music was used to build the reveal, and then backed off, letting you enjoy the scene without trying to force you into feeling how you should feel. Good example is the dog kennel scene, you get this mounting score building as the characters realize the horror of what is front of them, and then cuts when the action does happen, making it feel more natural.

Yeah, the music in the 2011 version was so bland and forgettable that it added nothing, was just droning in the background.

A lot of new horror movies like to show off the monster/killer because of the advances of technology, you don't have to hide the limitations you were working with. But it takes away from the fear you build. Look at Alien versus Aliens. They hid the xenomorph in Alien, so you couldn't tell it was a guy in a rubber suit, and it added to the tension because your imagination fills in those gaps. Your imagination will make anything you think of scarier than anything you can see on the screen. While the second one, given its much more action based than the first, the tension isn't the creature, its them surviving the onslaught. But that's less horror and more thriller, you're not fearing what'll happen next, you're anticipating the outcome.

The newer The Thing movie had that problem. There was no fear of who was infected, what is going to happen. You pretty much knew where the monster was and you were waiting to see who gets killed next. Its being chased by a killer dog, than reaching for the door handle, hoping the growling and scratching noises were just Scruffles the pug playing and not Cujo looking for a meal.

Blackest Night was the reason I got so big into comics.

And then seeming thread after thread of Blackest Night while it was coming out.
Made me go "fuckit I wanna read this. I'll catch up and read BL". So I bought GL Rebirth and both volumes of Sinestro Corps War, thinking after reading that I was set.
