Yeah, but reusing frames in newpaper comics is a thing even before computers. Garfild was aways know as the pioneer of the "cyanide & happiness" formula. two characters looking at each other in two panels, and a different panel with the punch line.

Garfield always used a large amount of similar panels.
Going digital seems like an easier thing to do than to keep drawing what is essentially the same picture multiple times.
