My instant reaction to hearing Bennett being on this book was similar to a lot of the responses above; however, she really seems to care about the character of Batwoman, and so I will definitely pick up the first arc and then see where it goes.

If it can reach Elegy levels I will be surprised but I'm not ruling it out

I always feel weird about Bennett because I think what she aims at in her comics is potentially interesting, but she goes so hard on it and doesn't seem capable of pulling back and doesn't seem to get much editing so e.g. Angela was terrible, even outside of the panels that get posted, it was all over the place and messy and smirking to itself constantly. Insexts started out as a meandering mess and again, is very self-congratulatory while shying away from really being horrific on-panel.

Animosity has been okay so far. It's got a nice sense of humor and the Bennett-isms have been toned back to be less obnoxious. Josie was exactly what I expected: Bennett loves putting songs she's written in a comic and having their scenes go on for way too long.

I'm not automatically thinking this will be terrible, but I'm hoping it's not another overwritten book with plenty of cut-out characters reliant on a YASS SLAAAAY reaction to get praise. I have this feeling Bennett will write a 10/10 book at some point but she needs to adjust her work to get there, maybe this will be adjusted. She spells things out too blatantly, especially on general points, way too often at the moment.

And her Angela: Queen of Hel is one of the worst comics I've ever read. Not even in the "waaah, she said something vaguely liberal!" sense. Like, take all of the "SJW" shit out of the book and it's STILL fucking horrible. The pacing, plotting, tonal shifts, constant random 4th wall breaking, and warped characterizations for damn near every character were at a level that it's genuinely shocking that she's a professional comic writer because it read like something straight out of a fanfic.

The only not awful comic she's ever written (that didn't have a co-writer bailing her ass out of the fire) is Bombshells, but even then it's not particularly good beyond the blatant Ivy/Harley shipping and inherent fun in the concept. Also Josie and the Pussycats was pretty good, but I'm hesitant to hold it up as an example of her being capable of good work based off of only 1 issue.

She's a top tier QT, but a piss poor writer. The best we can hope for is that the editor reigns in her SJW sensibilities which leaves us with just a badly written Batwoman book with great art (which would hardly be the first time that happened) rather than a badly written batwoman book with great art and constant shitposting fodder. Last thing we need is people turning on Rebirth because of an "unsolicited opinions on israel???" panel instigating rampant shitposting even if it doesn't reflect the rest of the line like what happened with Marvel.

Well, first off, Lobdell isn't writing any good comics in Rebirth. Second off, Lobdell has a history of writing good comics here and there. His 90s X-runs were some of the best of that era. Lobdell is a writer whose hit or miss, with mostly misses, but even his worst comics aren't offensively bad. The same can't be said for Bennett, who is nearing Chuck Austen levels of horrible track records. Not as bad as Austen, certainly, but the best we can hope for is "not offensively bad."

See the difference? In the silver age books the characters either thought to themselves or talked to the people around him, but Lobdell doesn't even know how to do that. Lobdell have the characters thinking straight to readers explaining everything that is going on as if we were a part of it. He doesn't know how to do any other way. Every fucking issue. No matter the character. And all his characters end up being full of snark and quirkness. He's like a more shitty Bendis.

Greg Rucka wanted to have Jacob Kane and Gabbi Kane as middle class people. So after Gabbi's death Jacob would marry big with Catherine Hamilton, who's a rich socialite. That's why Kate is estranged from her father and doesn't like Catherine. She believed that her father sold himself.

Catherine Hamilton, of course, was a referenced to Kathy Kane, the original Batwoman, who before INFINITE CRISIS hadn't existed since the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS reboot. Greg Rucka didn't wanted or didn't expected to see the original Batwoman brought back.

So you'd have Catherine Hamilton and Bette ???? (Flamebird), who'd be Catherine's niece, this as a reference to both Kathy Kane (Batwoman) and Betty Kane (Bat-Girl). You can see in Rucka's run, more precisely the arc "Cutter", Bette constantly defending her "aunt Cathy" to Kate, while Kate would only put up with Bette but still hate Catherine.
The reason Bette was kept around is because after CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Bette managed to survive the reboot as a Titans East member known as Flamebird without any reference to her "Bat-Girl" days, which wasn't in continuity anymore.

Of course, Morrison just went fucked all over Rucka's little continuity, leaving both Rucka and J.H. Williams III fucking pissed. Both Rucka and, specially, Williams III did everything they could to ignore Morrison's changes, but eventually other writers, mainly Scott Snyder, picked up on the whole Kate + Bruce are cousins connection.
